Sony introduces 'Day 1 Digital' campaign

Publisher offering 8 titles including Resident Evil 6, Assassin's Creed III, and MoH: Warfighter as day-one downloads in October; some available at $54 for PS Plus preorders.

PlayStation 3 gamers won't need to leave their homes to pick up some of October's biggest games. Sony announced today a new campaign called "Day 1 Digital" that lets gamers pick up eight big-name titles through the PlayStation Network day-and-date with their retail arrival.

Why leave the house?
Why leave the house?

These titles include Resident Evil 6, Assassin's Creed III, Medal of Honor Warfighter, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Dishonored, NBA 2K13, Doom 3: BFG Edition, and 007 Legends.

Sony also announced that gamers who hold a PlayStation Plus subscription and elect to preorder titles will be able to download select games at a reduced rate. PS Plus members who preorder Doom 3: BFG Edition can get the game for $36 instead of $40, while Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and NBA 2K13 will be available for $54 instead of $60 for those who plunk down a reservation fee.

Additionally, 007 Legends will be available to PS Plus subscribers during launch week at a 10 percent markdown. The game will retail for $60, meaning gamers can save $6 by purchasing the new James Bond title October 16-23.

I tend not to buy games that should be on disc for consoles, A great way to tap out your hard drive....but a digital game that should have been on a Blue Ray.

Smaller games like indie titles however.....I'll buy those no problem.

On PC downloading full games is no biggie because you would still have to install them anyways.....but I like having the box and the physical disc.....call me old sqool.

@MJ12-Conspiracy You you don't have to keep them on your Hardrive. You own the game and can alwys download it agian when ever you want. What do you think iOS owners and steam owners have been doing for 5 years. I even have an app on the iTunes that is banned. Vlc player but because I bought it I still own and can download it to my devices.

not only shuffling things in and out your HD all the timelowly limits it's life-span expectancy but you also take the chance of an older product being discontinued while off your device and then you will have to do without.

@inaka_rob I know all that, my point is Blue Rays hold a ton of info, not everyone has the best connection to download the content and even then I've heard some digital games on consoles don't quite work the way they should, they load faster on disc and slower if downloaded. I have a 500 GB hard drive and a 1TB hard drive for my PC, I have more than enough space for anything I could ever want. on consoles space is a premium and I strongly dislike having to shuffle stuff on and off my system.....

Is just an option, some of my friends who live in other countries with huge taxes can get it in a more cheap way on digital format than get it on the store on day one some retail versions cost even 100$ (and no day one launches, the games come after a week), no one forces you to buy it on digital format, is just another option, more options for more people in different environments is a good step in my opinion.

@alenth I am one of them. Problem is not just high taxes, but games take too long to ship. Case in point: I had pre-ordered Borderlands 2. But it was delayed by at least a week. I was getting it for about $60 [store vouchers of sort] but why not take the same game for $60 on release day than wait for another week or more?

I'll definitely be using this to buy games I want to play day one. Though for now Pandora has me and don't see playing anything else for rest of year.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm an old archaic bastard (apparently being 17 is old and archaic) that loves the discs over the download. There's nothing like dat new game smell, rubbing dat disc all over your body...waiting 7 hours for a game to download doesn't compare to inserting dat smexy disc into your system and listening to it whir...oh yeah.

@UnwantedSpam I was an old archaic bastard like you, until I took increased import taxes to the knee. I been working in Asia for past 6-7 years or so. Most countries here don't get games on time and get it at high prices. I can import but they work out expensive and rarely no day one. So, this is something that would work for games I want to buy day one. Rest, I'll still pick up from GameStop for cheap. People forget that GameStop is not present in every country and their are more countries in world than US.

@the_requiem I feels ya, bro. I'm not against the download, I just prefer a physical copy to a digital. If it's easier and cheaper for you to download, then by all means download.

Just don't beat me over the head with that "Murica rulez" BS, I am quite aware that there are other countries in this vast and beautiful world besides the U.S.

@UnwantedSpam And something about ripping open the packaging and thumbing through the manual before you play just gets me. I love digital due to it being faster but I sure do love that feeling of a new game.

that's cool, but I like having a Disc Copy, thank you. Digital copy is only good as long as your HDD don't fail, you can't sell it, and your screwed if something happens and you can't dload it back. Enjoy your dloads

@xolivierx What's not so good is when your blu-ray drive dies. That's happened to me twice since 2006. Pros and cons for both.

@DaNubianPryns @xolivierx Yeah, folks bring up HDD failures while disc drive failures are more common than HDD. You can replace HDD yourself. BD, not so easily.

Wow $4 off retail price.

If the industry is trying to push digital so hard they need to make it worth while over buying the retail package. Say like selling new games for $40 instead of $60. I bet you that would get some attention.

@svaubel I went to Bestbuy this weekend bought F1 2012 and Gran Turismo...there were ALOT of games for 19.99 and 29.99, even 39.99$...you just wait a while, you get a discount, and you can always sell / exchange a disc copy. 4$ savings for a 25gigs download...yeaaah right why don't you use all of my HDD space then I can spend another 100$ for 1000gig HDD...do the math kids.

I agree about the price, however. Sony and/or the publisher should not be charging full price for these Day 1 releases.

Depending upon how close you live to the store, you're using gas to get there more than likely, which isn't that cheap these days. I'll take a 10 percent discount and avoid traffic and lines any day.

@xolivierx That's a little extreme, but funny nonetheless lol. But, for me, I don't need more boxes cluttering up my room. I own way too many games for all that. I'm not a collector and the physical copy does nothing for me aside from looking nice on a shelf. I like to scroll through all the games I have on my hard drive, have them quickly accessible at any time (provided my hard drive doesn't crash lol), and give my BD drive a rest. There are pros and cons to both digital and retail purchases. I wouldn't completely rule one out over the other, though.

Fry's Electronics usually have the games $10 off during the first week of launch, a pretty good reason to go and check them out. Besides, with PS3 I'd have to download the game first, then install the game, then possibly patching the game. So unless they do it like Steam -preload everything and just unlock then play on launch day- I don't see any reason to buy these games in digital.

@jyml8582 Eerrrmm... they do that already. My friend pre-ordered Borderlands 2 off PSN and it was pre-loaded and was sitting in his HDD for 2 days before he could unlock it on launch day and play it.

I don't care if you can save $6 (really? what a stupid number), I'll ALWAYS buy retail when it comes to console games. It would take me days to download a game when I can just buy it, own it enjoy it and lend it to friends. This is just another way to take away the second hand gaming market in my opinion. But hey if that's how you want your games, more power to you, I much prefer my nice physical collection. And if you really think this is the future, be weary of what you ask for, this is just the oppurtunity Sony needs to say that we don't want used games cause we're not buying them...just like we don't "want" a price cut.

@immortality20 very true. I like ''owning my games''. A saved copy on a HDD don't mean shyt if the HDD fails(and they eventually all do). I know you can re-dload the game, but then again what happens if you are fooked once again? Bye bye money and digital copy, please buy again!

Digital is better than physical because you don't have to worry about storing all your old games. Some of us who have been gaming for a long time have hundreds to thousands of games. I all my prior gen games packed away in my grandparents basement halfway across the country. With digital you just download it whenever you feel like and delete it when your done. Also, no disk swapping.

@Zero5000X then you are not a true gamer. Try telling that to someone who collects vinyls(records). Don't tell them about the digital mp3, they like owning, it's a collection, and they like browsing through their stuff. Digital will NEVER be better than physical, because a digital copy means you have NO ownership over the product/content/material and it means the company can do what they want with the so called ''sold'' copies. Not to mention it cuts jobs(people working in the factories, transport, labeling, boxing, RETAIL...) I won't go digital

@Zero5000X Don't forget, you don't have to drive to the store and deal with the idiots in line. Plus the chance that they don't even have a copy. Plus the inevitable sales tax. Plus the risk of a disc breaking...you get the idea.

Gamers need to know there's a lot of benefits to going digital. I've been exposed to a far wider variety of games through XBL, PSN, and Steam at cheaper prices, as opposed to driving to Gamestop and seeing the overpriced flavor of the month they try to promote.

@Zero5000X Delete when you're done? What if you get the itch to play it, it'll be sooo much quicker to just download it again instead of putting a disk in? Every reason you put is so laughable.

Actually, it WILL be faster to download. Gigabyte internet is coming to town and that's going to be quite a bit faster than loading off a slow DVD or BluRay disk.

If retail disappears, then the laws of supply and demand won't even apply anymore to video games. Publishers will have the choice to sell a game for 60 $... forever.
