Sony Next Generation Portable Wrap-Up

Check out GameSpot's complete coverage of Sony's powerful new handheld device with videos, photos, hardware specs, software titles, and more.

After months of rumors and leaks, Sony has finally taken the wraps off one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry--a successor to the PSP that is currently codenamed Next Generation Portable. GameSpot was on hand at the portable's unveiling in Tokyo last night and covered the handheld's debut in depth.

The Hardware

On the outside, the device looks similar to the original PSP, but it has some key differences. The analog nub has been replaced with more pronounced analog sticks--two of them in fact--opening opportunities for more familiar control schemes. There are also two cameras on the system, one on the front and one on the back. Additionally, the screen on the front of the NGP (which uses OLED tech) is actually a touch screen similar to those found on various smartphones. There's also a touch pad on the back (think mouse pad) for more control opportunities.

For more on how the NGP looks and what's powering it, check out our hardware stories and video:

The Games

At the NGP conference, a few developers were on hand to show their support for the system and demonstrate what it can do. Hideo Kojima showed a cutscene from Metal Gear Solid 4 that had been ported to the Next Generation Portable, and representatives from Epic were on hand to show the Unreal engine running on the system. A new Uncharted game was revealed (which is being developed under Naughty Dog's supervision), and a new Call of Duty was announced for the platform. Among the other games shown at the conference were Yakuza, Hot Shots Golf, and Little Deviants. That's just the beginning, though, because more than 80 third-party publishers have signed on to back the handheld.

The thing I want the most is video output through PS3 (linked by USB, playable with my DS3-controller) or directly by HDMI to my TV/Reciver so I can play the games on my TV as well if I want to, if resolution are as good as they claim it shouldn't be impossible or unplayable for that matter, come on Sony, I dare you to try and make me satisfied =)

@ SquidBiskets: Maybe because 3DS is inferior to this in all aspects? Unless you think a play mode giving eye strain and headaches is better than all those specifications listed here.

@SquidBiskets Why? Are you serious? The 3DS is nothing compared to the NGP at the moment. Almost everyone who has gotten a 3DS doesn't like the 3D feature anyway. Sony has come up with a device that is so amazing and powerful it tops any handheld out on the market. However, yes I do agree it sounds pricey. But it shouldn't be less then $300 dollars I'm sure many won't mind paying that much money for such an awesome gaming device. I'm not a fan of touch screens, but with the double touch pads on this baby making it seem more realistic playing sounds really interesting to me. I look forward to buying the NGP (PSP2) for whatever amount it is finalized for cuz I know I won't be let down by performance, or web accessibility. I am still worried that the games created for it aren't going to be the best, on the other hand, with all these new controls it'll be interesting seeing what the gaming companies offer. Excited for this device's release date!

@GeneralShowzer Since when did Nintendo have overpriced hardware? I thought N64, NGC, Wii and all the versions of DS were cheaper than their equivalent competitors... >.

Sony never learns. NGP is going to fail against 3DS. Portable gaming should be unique and difference, not an inferior copy of home console. I rather play a much superior version of Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, or Lost Planet on a big HD screen, than on a 5 inch screen. There's no way I am going to pay $300-400 to play all the inferior versions of home console ports.

@NND1 So already the annouuncement of it uncharted and MGS and Lost planet 2 and COD are not good enough for the release. 300-350 is nothing for this. You have to pay 400 dollars for a damn ipod touch 4g 64 gig. And the 3ds is 250 dollars. I mean they added touchscreen to it, graphics near there console or pc counterparts, can play videos and music, back touchpad, second analog stick, has some kickass games already, its an all in one device, except for a phone. That is a fairly generous price for that. Anyways who cares about the outside look, big deal, Its a perfect design so you can reach everything easy.

@PenguinIzzy Dude you are a epic fail. The NGP will be amazing you gotta be blind if you can't see that. who the hell is gonna waste money on a stupid cell phone to play lackluster games when they can get PS3 quality titles on the go. And don't even get me started on the 3DS. 3D is a gimmick and a bad one at that plus I'm not paying $250 just so I can play a couple N64 games in 3D you got to be joking.

Nice, but what format will these be on? I'm starting to hate UMDs - rotating media loads way too slow. But on the other hand, PSN Store has disgusting DRM. I never thought I'd ask somebody to copy Nintendo, but please, give us flash sticks like on the DS.

Looks much more impressive than the 3Ds. Nintendo is doing the old trick again, underpowered - overpriced hardware, with gimmicks. Hope they don't get rewarded for that this time.
