Sony Next Generation Portable Wrap-Up

Check out GameSpot's complete coverage of Sony's powerful new handheld device with videos, photos, hardware specs, software titles, and more.

After months of rumors and leaks, Sony has finally taken the wraps off one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry--a successor to the PSP that is currently codenamed Next Generation Portable. GameSpot was on hand at the portable's unveiling in Tokyo last night and covered the handheld's debut in depth.

The Hardware

On the outside, the device looks similar to the original PSP, but it has some key differences. The analog nub has been replaced with more pronounced analog sticks--two of them in fact--opening opportunities for more familiar control schemes. There are also two cameras on the system, one on the front and one on the back. Additionally, the screen on the front of the NGP (which uses OLED tech) is actually a touch screen similar to those found on various smartphones. There's also a touch pad on the back (think mouse pad) for more control opportunities.

For more on how the NGP looks and what's powering it, check out our hardware stories and video:

The Games

At the NGP conference, a few developers were on hand to show their support for the system and demonstrate what it can do. Hideo Kojima showed a cutscene from Metal Gear Solid 4 that had been ported to the Next Generation Portable, and representatives from Epic were on hand to show the Unreal engine running on the system. A new Uncharted game was revealed (which is being developed under Naughty Dog's supervision), and a new Call of Duty was announced for the platform. Among the other games shown at the conference were Yakuza, Hot Shots Golf, and Little Deviants. That's just the beginning, though, because more than 80 third-party publishers have signed on to back the handheld.

@jayd02 addendum...I totally spaced on the 3DS' clamshell, cut that .8" thickness in half for all applications to battery thickness. It's gotta be a seriously thin battery.

@jayd02 Again, fair point. I'd link you to a certain other site to show the exact size comparison, but then Gamestop would drop the hammer on me, so sadly I can't. But the dimensions of the NGP are 7.17"x3.28"x.73". My Netbook's positively absurd 9-cell battery is 8 inches wide, and a 6 cell is a lot smaller. The 3DS is 5.3"x2.9"x.8". It's too small to support a battery of any reasonable size, and the fact is that ALL Nintendo DS handhelds used a battery that took up most of one side of the handheld and had fairly dismal stats. (I've owned 2 of em, haven't seen the DSi though, so correct me if they changed it.) The old PSP had a battery that barely took up any space at all, and the new components in the NGP, while bigger, don't justify the increase in size...so I have to assume that they are trying to cram some stupidly large battery in there. Don't count on Sony to succeed, but they are more likely than Nintendo right now. Considering that battery life was the largest complaint on the PSP by far, even eclipsing the single analog nub, it only makes sense that they would attempt to rectify that complaint.

@PointlessFool The NGP is only said to be a little bigger then the original psp and I am pretty sure that is due to the quad core and touch tech inside. You say sony could be awesome and then again Nintendo could do the same.

@jayd02 A fair point, though at the same time...if the NGP really is that huge, it can most certainly support the same MASSIVE 6 cell battery that shows up on dell netbooks these days, and that monster can keep desktop level parts running for 9 hours these days. Then again, Sony will want to cut costs, so you are probably right. Just keep in mind that Sony could choose to be awesome if they wanted to.

Now I need them to tell me the price before I buy a 3DS. Also why calling it NGP as a code name when we all know their lack of imagination for names will bring them to call it psp2

What would be cool is if you use your same psn acc on psp and when u get trophies in game it syncs to your ps3 psn. Of course that means i'm also asking for the possibility of communicating with psn friends (messages, ect.) on psp.

They need to rush this thing, I mean, of course the device needs to be tested and perfected, but think Turok in 3D with this kind of technology or a newer Resident Evil, that plays like Res.4 & 5 but that's scary like the earlier games would light up the sales charts, it would be a win-win situation, Sony would be making buckets of money and gamers would be having the experience of a lifetime. Last but not least game developers would also be able to program the game so that others in the room could view the action on the screen form a different perspective than the person with the head unit, and if it were a co-op game or a verses game (PvP) then two could wear the mounted displays and each see the game from their own perspective. Well all, that's what I think, lets just sit back and see what happens. but i have to tell you I've got my fingers crossed. Hurry up Sony!

I'm feeling good about the new NGP. A little disappointed by the lack of a 3D announcement at this time but I strongly feel that this is a feature that will be included at some time in the not too distant future. Still Sony has the head mounted 3D display and that I believe is their ace in the hole. with the ability to move the NGP around and see from the avatars viewpoint would really be fantastic( like in the Hot Shots Golf demonstration). Let me start off by saying that I did not get to experience this piece of gaming goodness first hand, but here's what I think about it. In my head I can picture what a wonderful thing this would be if it came to market soon, this 3D head mounted display plus the Playstation move camera and controller set up as normal would give players a very immersive gaming experience. The reason that I say this is if you think about all of the virtual reality movie or images that come to mind the users of the virtual reality devices only see their perfected selves on the virtual reality screen. Well listen up SONY, here is a sure fire way to get more interest in the Move franchise. As I said before, I have not seen the device in person, but I imagine that with this 3D display mounted on a players head, with a move controller and attachments(which game developers could program to be visible on the screen in 3D along with the head tracking software from makers of GT5) in hand and Sony would have a sure-fire winner on their hands.

@Jman9375783 dude proof is in the numbers. They have geared more towards the casual but that is what gamers want obviously since people are buying it. People want to have fun, its no always about how flashy, shiny, or high tech, its about how much fun your going to have while playing it. I have a Wii and I always go back to MG2, New Super Mario, Madworld, Goldeneye, NMH. Also you say they aren't geared towards the core gamers? Please define core first. You say core do you mean the majority? Or are you trying to refer to hardcore. If you say core Nintendo definitely has since they are selling the most, which would mean they are doing what the majority of what people want. If you are talking about hardcore, your absolutely right they aren't. They have a few games, but its not for hardcore gamers. I am in college now and I don't have a 360 or a PS3 and right now I don't want one. I have my Wii, and whenever I have some free time I pop in some NSMB, or brawl with some friends. Its all about how much fun your having.

@PointlessFool I am pretty sure both are gonna have some bad battery life. Seeing what the psp is going to be pumping out and what the 3DS is going to be doing as well. I give both systems at least 4 hours if not that. Hope you didn't forget the quad core and duel touch pads that the battery has to support.

"this mean that there weren't many established franchises on the PSP" i ment franchises on the PS machines, that could be translated into the PSP. And i'm aware there are God Of War and MGS games and such, but it took a long time before they came out on the machine which is sad cause it could have boosted sales... but whatever, i hope you understand my message below

People forget something: the PSP was released in 2004 in japan, 2005 in North America and Europe. The PS3 was released in 2006 in japan and later in NA and EU, now what does this mean? Well this mean that there weren't many established franchises on the PSP, unlike the Nintendo DS which had Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Pokémon etc. this means that people were secured to have something at release if they bought the DS, unlike the PSP. I mean, the PSP's big release game were Wipeout... unlike the DS that had Super Mario 64! Honostly the PSP hasn't really shined untill these past 2 years, but it's too late... But now that the PS3 has been on the market for a couple of years we've seen franchises like Resistance, Uncharted, Infamous, God of War, MGS, etc. etc - gaming franchises exclusively for the PS systems, and if these are gonna be released to a machine like NGP, which they are, it's gonna draw customers to Sony - Nintendo has always had their franchises which will always secure em, i for one don't like Nintendo's way of de-evolving, going back to 2D games, and never upgrading graphics, offering poor online experience - i have both the Wii and DS - i love my DS, but i'm telling you, the Wii has been dusty for some time, and the DS won't be in my hands anymore the second i get NGP Remember too: games like Call of Duty, and Fifa and Madden, and those kind of games that sell a bunch for each release - they can't run on a 3DS but sure can on an NGP, what does that tell you :)

do not make a war between 3DS vs. NGP, because they are devices for different audiences, both will sell millions worldwide, the NGP is good for the hardcore games and software producers, the 3DS is good for the Mario and Zelda :P I will buy 3DS and NGP,Im fanboy Sony, but I like Mario :P

If this ends up being in the same situation as the PSP, where it just has portable versions of games I would rather play on a console, I'll be passing on it.If it costs as much as a PS3, especially.

I think both the 3DS and NGP will do well. We are a more portable society and there is more room for both systems in the market. However I believe both Sony and specially Nintendo need to keep an eye on Apple. Apple will capture specially the youth early on with gaming on their ipod touch, iphone, and ipads. In this case I think Sony is wise to embrace a similar stratergy. Like Apple, Sony will provide their Playstation brand across many platforms such as Android, PS3 and now NGP. While Nintendo will attack the portable market with a superb 3DS they fail to neglect the home space and phones. By the time they decide to succeed the Wii it maybe to late. Sonny and Apple will continue to peck at Nintendo's piece of the portable pie. Nintendo will be found with a dated Wii in the home space against two formidable opponents in the Xbox360 and PS3. They will have no contender in the phone market at all. Nintendo is in a bad situation as a company on many fronts. They will gain their success with the 3DS but they fail to look at the bigger picture. The console war is fought on more fronts than they have considered.

Well if a cellphone like BB Torch is at least $500, how much could this thing cost? It would be absurd to pay the same or even more for this, than for a PS3. Don't get me wrong, I want it for sure, but SONY has to be careful about the price they set, I think it will cost $250, for starters.

Usually don't comment, but I had to sign in on this one. Been playing Nintendo since the SNES and still play and buy all their systems (minus the VB). Lemme say, this thing is going to dump so hard on the 3DS it might be hard to watch. May be the first time I buy a Sony handheld and not a Nintendo handheld, bottom line - I'm impressed. Any normal person would be too.

The current 3D technology is soo overrated. I´m still waiting for a nice holographic experience....Until then, the 3D is just something that gives you a slight sense of depth and a headache. Also, the 3DS is focusing on bringing old games back and just adding the 3D effect...FOR WHAT?? "omg, zelda looks soo much cuter now in 3D"- LOL..That being said, i think nintendo will lose this time. NGP will win big time!

@mimicus I don't think preference over the two handhelds is really about age. there are plenty of kids who play gory/indepth types of games and there are heaps of people (both adults and children) who prefer more zen-type games that are easy to play and don't require much commitment

Claiming to know which handheld will perform better is a moot point. It's a question of hardware capability and games according to age-appropriate content. Nintendo 3DS = Children Sony PSP2 = Grown-Ups See how that works?

@jayd02 Nintendo knows what gamers want? How I see it, they're evolving more into a family-oriented/casual gaming industry than a core gaming industry. To be honest, I won't say I'm a core gamer but, I haven't touch a Nintendo game in ages. I'll probably get a Wii just to get the new Zelda. But, why would I spend money buying a console just for one game. Also Microsoft and Sony has been coming out with more new features/technology (some great; some not so great), while I haven't heard much from the Nintendo scene. I don't hate Nintendo, I did grew up with playing Nintendo consoles but Nintendo hasn't really done anything impressive in the recent years.

it won't matter if i want 3ds or that what it is called "officially" soon, down the road, as for playstation suite we did not see that coming, but that's good, and maybe that can hopefully "fix' 1 problem....bringing ps2 games to the new handheld and those android phones, still thinking ipod touch, or whatever not ipad, haha, good luck sony. i'm "not favorable on one side", i'm on 'all sides".

No way it will cost lower than $600.... Sony already said that they wanna sell it cheaper, but to make it they will provide a different model from which we see here - with some "reduced" functions... I bet that model with 3G cellular connection will be sold independently and maybe it will be most cheaper but as usual cheaper at first sight - definitely it will come with some cellular 2 year contract - so anyway this thing will costs like 2-3 big PS3 consoles - such new processors and other advanced sensors/multitouch stuff is very expensive always.

I own an Xbox 360 and a PC, and this has me excited. Yes folks, this thing is gonna be a hit. I didn't like the last PSP (despite owning one for about 3 years) because it's single thumb stick neutered it. This fixes that problem AND makes up for it all over again with the touch screen, and when you consider that it's massive size means the parts can be big and cheap, it'll probably not cost that much. At least by comparison to the 3DS. This thing is COOL.
