Sony No Longer Sells PS4 Digital Game Codes At Retail, But GameStop Doesn't Seem To Care

GameStop executive explains why Sony's big move won't have much of an impact on the company's bottom line.

Late last month, it emerged that Sony would no longer offer PS4 game codes at retailers like GameStop and others beginning April 1. The thinking followed that GameStop and other affected brick-and-mortar stores would take a hit as a result. While it's too early to say for sure, GameStop believes the move by Sony won't have much of a negative impact.

Speaking on an earnings call today, GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd, who was involved in discussions with Sony about the change, said the majority of digital games bought at GameStop in fact come from point cards, not full-game download codes.

Now Playing: Next-Gen Console Reveals Coming Soon, Predicts GameStop - GS News Update

"Most of the sales of full-game downloads ... at retail come in the form of currency," he said. "So the move by Sony to go back to the currency model, we don't expect it to have a material impact on our results because we'll continue to sell that currency."

GameStop is uniquely positioned to sell virtual currency thanks to its buy-sell-trade model, Lloyd said. He also said buying virtual currency at a physical retailer is also attractive for people who want to use cash, or those who are are unwilling or unable to use a credit card on the internet to buy directly from Sony or theoretically other digital stores.

Sony only stopped supplying full-game codes to GameStop and other retailers on April 1, so it's certainly too early to say if the change will indeed have any material impact on the bottom lines of affected retailers.

GameStop recently reported earnings for its fiscal fourth quarter and full year, and it could have gone better; for the full year, GameStop lost $673 million. The retailer also said it expects next-generation consoles to possibly be announced or released soon.

@untouchables111: The gift cards can be used to buy PSN points or Xbox cards, or the physical game itself. I don't see the problem.

@Barighm: An issue is usually ppl give like $60 gift certificates.. PSN cards don't come in $60. You gotta buy a $50 and then a $20 card usually. Sometimes I see $10 ones, but Sony charges tax, so you need $60+ still.

Sony doesn't have game gifting, so game codes was a way I used to buy games for my friends who lived far away. All so Sony can make extra $$ but making ppl buy extra in PSN cash.. like when games sell premium currency in $5 chunks, but then charge $7 worth of it in game. So you gotta buy more than what you actually need, and waste your money.

I've honestly never seen a digital code for a game sold in a store. I see codes for microtransactions and in game currencies, but never for whole games.

@Barighm: Several stores sell them now - Best Buy and Walmart just to name a couple. I don't know why people complain about having to use credit cards to buy digital games? I buy games from Sony and Microsoft using PayPal and can choose if I want to pay via credit card or directly from my bank account. I guess some people don't realize you can link your bank account to PayPal.

@bdrtfm: I've been to those stores and I haven't seen those codes. I don't see them at GameStop/EB either. I'm guessing they're just not very prolific outside the US.

@bdrtfm: People don’t want their credit card information to get stolen, if it’s avoidable why give a company your credit card number? If you think your card info won’t get stolen, just remember it already happened to Sony back in 2011 on a massive scale!

PayPal is a little different though.

@skot_free: The only times I've bought digital game codes were recently off of Amazon. Amazon had promotions on Kingdom Hearts III and Smash Ultimate and allowed the purchases to be digital instead of physical, which I prefer.

According to Gamstop, nothing hurts their bottom line. They are apparently impervious to the perils of every other brick and mortar store who have seen a steady decline in business as online and digital sales increase. Wasn't it just yesterday that the US reported online sales were higher than brick and mortar for the first time ever? Not sure how Gamestop manages to be the one business model on the planet not affected by things every other business is affected by? I'm slowly getting out of game and console sales and relying more heavily on services. Wish I knew their secret.

@bdrtfm: Their secret is that they are the only ones who buy and sell used games and systems. And the more digital is pushed, the stronger they get.

I like to think most people see the downsides of digital markets and why physical is more valuable in the long run.

@chubby170: They are not the only people that sell used games and systems. Best Buy does as well. And I've shopped in Gamestop a few times. They rip you off in amazing fashion. Just ask them how much credit they'll give you for a new release game. You'll be lucky to get $20 credit for a $60 game days after release. They then sell that $60 game for $55. Who buys a used new release game for $5 less than brand new? It's pathetic. They're a glorified pawnshop. In fact, I know a pawnshop that actually gives you better deals. So does my business even though we are mainly a service business. I guess they survive off of the foolish who are easily departed from their money. Everyone I talk to says they are a total ripoff yet they survive on the sale of used games which every pawnshop on the planet sells, many for better prices. It's bizarre.

@bdrtfm: I do but mostly dont agree.. I do agree that for a new games or new systems, you dont get a good deal. But aside from that, I dont have a problem with their offerings.

Personally, I dont go to them for anything newer but I will always check them out for somewhat older games at a discount and certainly for past generation gaming..

Agree, I wouldn't buy a digital game code from etail or retail, but I would buy a PSN card so as not to use my credit card on the console
