Sony on Virtual Reality -- "Its Time Has Come"

Company teases it has "a lot of things to talk about" next week at the Game Developers Conference.

Virtual reality is poised to be a big topic next week at the Game Developers Conference, and now one of the key players has spoken up to say the time is right for VR to really take off. Shawn Layden, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, discussed the potential of VR on the latest Playstation Blogcast and teased that Sony will make some announcements about PlayStation VR next week during GDC.

No Caption Provided

"We're going to have a lot of things to talk about in that regard at the Game Developers Conference coming up soon in San Francisco," he said. Sony has a PlayStation VR event scheduled for Tuesday, March 15.

Two of the biggest remaining questions about the PlayStation 4 headset are around its price and release date. It's possible Sony will finally answer those questions next week at GDC, but as of yet this is unconfirmed. Whatever the case, Layden is clearly excited about VR's potential.

"It's a perfect storm now for VR technology," he said. "It's a concept that's been kicking around for quite some time. Some of us remember Virtual Boy way back in the day and a lot of different companies have had a go at virtual reality technology.

"I think right now we have a combination of the necessary processing power and graphics power inside the machine," he added. "We have the display technology which can realize these images at a fidelity which looks natural, if you will. And we have the production technology to create a headset and a rig that is well-suited for the human head that won't create a tiresome experience."

With all of these elements combined, "I think now is the time for VR; its time has come," Layden said. Not only does VR stand to impact the gaming space (Layden said he foresees new genres and categories coming to bear), but other fields of entertainment such as film will move forward with VR.

The introduction of PlayStation VR (and Oculus Rift and HTC Vive) this year may turn out to be a watershed moment for virtual reality.

"VR can be to console gaming like smartphones are to feature phones. That leap," he said. "When the smartphone came out, it's like, 'Well, it's an iPod but I can make a phone call; what does that mean?' We had no idea then what it would mean to us now. And I think, looking five years into the future, we're going to look back on today and say, 'Wow, there's so much we didn't know that VR was going to do for us but we do know it now."

Too bad the consoles will be the worst place for VR. VR needs the open PC, it needs people to mod existing games and it needs application outsite of gaming (like adult movies ;)) to really get spread wide. Also even with that, the lack in tech might be a problem. Even on my OR DK2 I can still see the pixels. We need at least 4k on those screens. For me personal, VR is only here when I have a 4k headset and there are tons of mods for existing games to play them in VR

Yeah except people actually buy smartphones not because they want to but because they need to. VR not so much, we could game with or without it.

The best part about being an early VR adopter is that there's no laws preventing you from VR'ing and driving your automobile at the same time!!!

Sony seems to be always a step further, though I hope they don't start developing "gimmicky systems" like Nintendo's Wii. Once the system's peripherals get more attention than the system's library, style over substance wins...

Never buy first gen overpriced test market electronics. Wait and see if it last and what 2nd gen improvements are. - Apple taught me this.

Plus still waiting for the Sega 3D for the Genesis that we were promised. lol.

Bah! I don't even see so much difference between regular phones and smartphones, besides that fact smartphones have a lot more features (and the only thinkable issue is the virus/tracking/foliostuff). It was like a true evolution. VR however could change gaming completely and I'm not sure I want that. However I think games should do something because ever since 2000 and PS2 almost nothing has happened in the field. If this finally coming upgrade means gaming evolves into something that I don't like then so be it. There are still a million and a half games out there.

Really a lot depends how VR will end up. Will it be like the new television and 100% of games will eventually support it, or will it be like the guitar, headphone, steering wheel peripherals that work with just some games. Eventually as a 50-100 euro peripheral it could add a bit of enjoyability into the random space sim or so, but in general I want to keep the flat tv instead of those goggles.

EDIT: As a tool in a job or day at a theme park or so then for sure VR has potential, I'm just talking about the day-to-day gaming which I think this site is about. When I'm switching from Mass Effect to Street Fighter or playing a quick game of NHL I can't imagine wanting to wear the glasses the whole time.

I'm still on the fence about PSVR. I wont be an early adopter but I'll be keeping an eye on it to see how it goes, pricing will be key.

If they use the same "production technology" as the Playstation Gold headphones, we're in trouble. I really want the PSVR to succeed, so if Sony is reading this, address the plastic cracking issues experienced by many headphone owners and learn to not repeat it.

@emptycow718: Sony essentially single-handedly made Blu-Rays the optical disc standard with the PS3. Contributions like that cannot be ignored. Even Microsoft have a Blu-Ray drive in the Xbox One now. I hope PS VR brings VR to the mainstream. We need to be positive about any advancement in technology regardless of who has made it. I also hope Holo Lens works out for Microsoft.

@emptycow718: ..if you know Sony's track record you will know that alongside the failures you mention they have a long list of tech that is ubiquitous today that they brought to forefront spanning decades.

Alongside that is the fact that Sony are not the only company involved here then all your post displays is an anti Sony bias.

The time has come for VR to flop around like a fish out of water... lol

Seriously though the PSVR needs to be no more than $350 with a move controller and camera included to have a chance at limited success.

First, this is NOT VR!! Matrix IS VR, This is virtual immersion. Still I am excited about a more immersive gaming experience.

Second. I really HOPE Sony goes BIG and comes out with a great AMD GPU that has VR accelerator. it will be worth $500.00 to me.

Third, everyone jumps on the Gimmick bandwagon, and go into some sort of old people rage. I know we have aged since the Atari days, but people please if you feel that things are changing too fast for you stay playing the NES, TG-16 or Sega Genesis...

@Ravenlore_basic: That's funny, I've been interpreting much of the anti-VR rhetoric as teen shortsightedness, but that's probably because just I'm older. Cognitive biases and all that crap. Either way, all the definitive posturing really is kinda weird.

Yes VR is an exciting technology can revolutionize gaming but one shouldn't dismiss the worries of the doubters. You have to understand that in today's gaming world it's plagued with cookie cutters, DLC, micro-transaction, buggy, unfinished, and failed promises and I don't think just by bringing VR tech to us is going to change these companies bad behaviors. If VR fails it's going to be by the hands of many of these greedy companies that are going to churn shovel ware and treat the technology as a fad to milk its worth and ruin it. Probably the only way for this to succeed is for us to criticize VR even more and make those companies prove its worth with compelling games that showcase this revolutionary technology. Because just pre-ordering and sitting their waiting to see if it fulfills its promise didn't work so well for the most part this gen so far.

@Karmazyn: How will this 'VR' cause a heart attack, any more than playing any video game would? The only difficulty I see is that if you do actually have a heart attack, taking the head mounted display off may take a few minutes, which could delay seeking medical attention.

@johnholmes1099: I think you're underestimating how immersive VR gaming is. Some of the horror survival demos currently available are disturbingly scarey. You only have to You Tube some VR demos to see how the players are physically and mentally affected. Having a heart attack I believe, is a very real issue. Most horror VR games produced from here on in will almost certainly have a heart condition disclaimer attached to it.

With a 2D screen, you have everyday distractions breaking the immersive quality of a game. With VR, you are actually 'in' the game world. Whole different experience.

I'm not sure this counts for anything, but I really want to try VR and AR. I'm not convinced they're anything more than a gimmick at this point, but I want to experience it, I'm curious. The technology behind both looks really cool.

You use all of them today. VR will be the same.

My eyes are just not that great, not only do I worry about eye strain but I have concerns about whether putting screens that close to your eyes is safe long term for anyone's retinas, let alone my own.

On top of that VR games for the most part look like they have not learned the lessons of EyeToy and Kinect games, they all seem like they were developed based on the first idea some dude came up with, there is no depth in the mechanics, nothing that makes me want to play something for more than an hour in any VR game that has been shown off. So in the end it's some goggles I could put on while I play Xcom 2 or The Witcher. I just don't understand the 'revolution' here. There have been dozens of futures of gaming that haven't come to fruition despite everyone in the industry assuring us it was going to happen, singleplayer was supposed to have died off years ago remember.

@spaced92: I can't comment too much on the eyestrain piece as that's going to be a wait and see for all of us. There is no definitive evidence at this point that VR is going to ruin our eyes or diminish our brain's ability to weave the tapestry of senses we perceive as reality. That being said, we also haven't had headsets in the hands of the masses being used for hours a day for years at a time. So yeah, we'll have to wait and see. I'd just urge everyone to walk the line between sensible caution and the tech-phobia we see every time a new piece of technology comes out... cell phones, transistor radios, televisions, the electric power plant, fire, etc.

As for the VR experience, your brief description of VR tells me that you just don't get it yet. That's not an insult so much as it is a reality of the tough road the VR industry has ahead in terms of convincing people of its viability in the gaming industry and beyond.

The revolutionary factor you're looking for is "Presence," and its the single most important factor when it comes to enjoying the VR experience. Presence is inherent to the headsets themselves and doesn't depend on implementation of associated mechanics (as with the Kinect, EyeToy, or Wii remote). It's very different from 3D which just adds the illusion of depth to an image. Presence is about convincing your brain (to a point) that you are in fact inhabiting a virtual world (that's why people freak out during VR roller coaster demos even though they know damn well they're sitting in a desk chair). So yeah, the Witcher 3 and X-Com 2 would probably make for shitty VR experiences, but games like Elite Dangerous are already showing us how just how transformative the VR experience can be.

I do agree with you that most of these early games and demos look lame, very lame. But here's some anecdotal evidence as food for thought.. take a look at the Final Approach game demo. It looks sooo sooo sooo boring, but most gamers who get to experience the game claim that's its actually really fun. What?! Even I'm skeptical on this one, but if VR really can make a game like Final Approach seem fun then I'm very hopeful for its future.

Man. I don't know if this counts but I went to best buy and tried out the Samsung VR for 5 mins. When I took it off I felt nauseated and the room was spinning . I really am hesitate to buy, I don't own a ps4 but If I did I wouldn't buy it. I'm a pc gamer and I'm not buying htc vive or oculus. to much risk involve. not the only one either, there's some comments from users on reddit who actually got a chance to use them and they felt sick or nauseated too.

@game4metoo: It depends on what demo you'd been shown. The Gear VR hertz is 60 and you need a minimum of 90 for gaming. with video you can get away with 60 but still 90 is recommended. On top of that some developers make some shitty games, movies, and demo just to rush out and be the first on the market and they end up showing people crap. Add to Best Buy employees not knowing shit as well they don't usually show off the right demo.
