Sony prepping PlayStation Cloud?

Ahead of 2013 PlayStation Meeting, company registers several domain names hinting at cloud-gaming support.

Ahead of Sony's major New York City event tomorrow, the company has registered a series of domain names related to something called PlayStation Cloud. As spotted by Superannuation, the domain names are registered to a Gaikai system administrator and IT manager.

No Caption Provided

Sony acquired cloud-gaming company Gaikai last year for $380 million to establish a new cloud service combining Gaikai's resources with its own. A new Wall Street Journal report suggests the PlayStation 4 will be backwards compatible, allowing gamers to stream PlayStation 3 titles.

A Sony representative was not immediately available to comment.

Sony is expected to announce the PlayStation 4 tomorrow at its 2013 PlayStation Meeting, beginning at 3 p.m. PST/6 p.m. EST. GameSpot and its sister sites will be in attendance at the event, which will also be live-streamed.

Cloud gaming is cool as an option, but I hope it does not become a standard.

Cloud saves and such are nice. It is just the modern trend of replacing USB sticks with harddrive space accessible from the internet. Of course now they can look through all my saves and find out what I have been playing and such, but I think that is a good thing because devs can find out exactly what I play, how, and when and hopefully can produce more stuff that I like.

Bet it is only available for people that subscribe though...

In theory it could be good, however as the internet infrastructure is basically pants in a lot of areas then basing the whole system on it would be a bad idea.

Please no! I dont want to stream any game online!!!! I already have to deal with trying not to go over the maximum limit on data cap for internet usage downloading large games off psn. But to stream to play them is a NO NO! I will be keeping my ps3 but it would be kind of nice not to have so many products hooked up to my tv...

lol at people whining about cloud gaming, its a great concept. do you also cry about netflix, how for $10 a month. you get to watch movies and stuff while not owning them. as long as the price is low for titles, its not going to be bad.

@aryanbrar You obviously don't pay the bills in your house, or else just don't have to deal with data caps, unlike most of america.

@aryanbrar SC GenjiSamurai has a valid point as does Gh05T-666. I've heard Streaming increases game lag and isn't as great as playing a physical disc and I personally feel America has a low Internet standard as opposed to the rest of the world. Also some of us are being raped by Cable companies which could give us more but well....money is money....(I hate you time warner and your monopoly ways....)

@179107199999 @aryanbrar I'm not sure the speculation fits as to actually streaming a live game online. The new popular type of format for our games is having a client to manage them. For example Steam allows you to download the game onto your hard drive while negating the physical copy all together.

In terms of purchasing and organization, Cloud gaming is definitely the way to go.. streaming a live game online? I doubt the console next gen is ready for that, nor do I believe the technology is present for consoles to accomplish this. That would take a beefy network card that would significantly amp up the price for the overall system..

Consoles have always geared towards feeding the masses.. Sony's first mistake was making the PS3 unobtainable to the masses, and I think they learned from this. e.g. $600.00 price tag? But again that's just my opinion.

@eLLiptiX @179107199999 @aryanbrar I like what you say.Sony's equivalent to Cloud is Gaikai. But It does seem logical that Consoles aren't ready. From what I've read and heard these Consoles are just low brow PCs. As for the idea of Cloud Gaming. I'm opposed to it because online anything can happen. It would suck if you data was trashed.I still prefer an HD or even a Memory Card (LOL).Honestly though I hear the good but there's always a bad side like what a mentioned before. You bring good points but I'd like to hear other stuff that could go wrong. And while its cool to play old classics on PSN it kinda seems like its Emulation.Haven't played the cloud yet and maybe its because I'm a Dinosaur but I rather have my data at my side so to speak Not floating around in space. Its only a matter of time before something crazy happens.(LOL Dinosaurs!!!!)

@179107199999 @aryanbrar I'd also like to daisy chain onto this... let's say the Cloud gaming hype boasts backwards compatibility all the way back to PS1.. let's say you still currently own PS1 games and decide to slide them into your Playstation 4, and that Cloud recognizes you own these titles, and allows you to continually play them through their digital libarary.. sounds pretty convenient right?

It's not unobtainable.. just look at what Cloud based game systems are doing now.. For example I owned a physical copy of Dishonored.. since Steam has rights to this game.. it auto updates and manages this game for me rendering the physical copy totally useless.. THAT technology is there and available.. then people complain.. uh.. that's not an old game dood! No kidding.. I still play Twisted Metal 2 on PSN.. I Still play Mortal Kombat 2 on PSN..

Lame. I'll wait til the end of its cycle to buy it, if at all; just like I have with PS3- just got on this past Christmas, but had a 360 early on. Hopefully Microsoft continues playing it smart since Sony's still using this foolish business method instead of paying attention to what made them succesful and and profitable in the VG industry with PS1 & PS2.

I hope the cloud service only serves as a way to provide some form of backwards compatibilty for ps3 games. Because for anything other then that i think it will fail, just take a look at how Onlive fared.

It's to early to do serious cloudgaming.

As long as they don't force me to "stream" a game I'm fine with anything, I'd much rather have the game on the hard drive to be honest.

backwards compatibility with the ps3 will definitely contribute to the ps4's success. put that on the cloud as well? sounds like it could be very popular indeed

@DarkSaber2k yeah i've been reading the thread and it seems fiber optic needs to happen. japan is already there tho, the US is just slow in implementation. nonetheless if the ps4 is only backwards-compatible via the cloud then yeah i agree that would suck

One thing I know is that I'm not a fan of repaying for games I already purchased and I'm not a fan of having to pay monthly fees for something I already payed for as well. All I'm saying is that I'm hoping the PS3 playback is free for games I already have.

Sounds like this is a harbinger to the PS4 blocking used games. Just let me pop my PS3 games in the PS4 and let me play them directly off the disc, none of this cloud streaming bullsh!t . . .
