Sony PS5 Release Date Window, Controller Details, Official Name, And More

The PlayStation 5 is on the way next year.

Earlier this year, we unexpectedly got the first details about Sony's next-generation console plans. Once again, the company has shared more--in somewhat unceremonious fashion--confirming the system's name and when it's coming out: It's officially called the PlayStation 5, and its release date will fall somewhere in the Holiday 2020 period. While there's still no word on how what the PS5's price will be, Sony did also share the first details on new features available in its controller--at least for now, not yet called the DualShock 5--and more about the discs it uses, ray-tracing support, SSD, UI features, and other aspects of the system. Here's what we learned.

The company announced some of this news in a PlayStation blog post. "I'm proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we'll be launching in time for Holiday 2020," said Sony Interactive Entertainment present Jim Ryan in the post. "These updates may not be a huge surprise, but we wanted to confirm them for our PlayStation fans, as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation."

Now Playing: PS5 Release Window & New Controller Announced - GS News Update

Ryan went on to share more details on Sony's vision for the next generation, as well as its plans for the PS5 controller: "One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games, and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion.

"To that end, there are two key innovations with the PlayStation 5's new controller. First, we're adopting haptic feedback to replace the 'rumble' technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.

"The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal."

Sony shared more details on the PS5 in an interview with Wired, similar to how it revealed the first PS5 information earlier this year. The company reassured fans, for example, that the hard drive seen in current-gen consoles is out, and a faster, more efficient solid-state drive is in. More new details include:

  • The PS5 will include a disc drive for physical games and 4K Blu-rays.
  • PS5 discs will have a capacity of 100 GB.
  • Game installation is mandatory, but the console will allow you to just install a multiplayer campaign, for example, or install the entire game and then delete the single-player portion once you're done.
  • The controller "doesn't have a name yet," but contains an improved speaker, USB-C connectivity, and a larger-capacity battery.
  • "There is ray-tracing acceleration in the GPU hardware," says Mark Cerny, lead system architect.
  • The new UI will allow you to see more details on what you can play at any time, as well as more on what your friends are doing.
  • Bluepoint Games, the studio behind remakes such as Shadow of the Colossus and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, is working on a PS5 game that it says is a "big" one.

Sony has not yet shared what the PS5 will look like, nor its precise release date or price point. Earlier this year the company did state it was working on a new PlayStation, but stopped short of confirming a release window or name, so this is the first time those details have been confirmed. We do know is that the PS5 will be better for the environment and that it will support backwards compatibility in some way. For more, check out everything we know about the PS5.

I am so shocked. who would have ever thought the company that came out with the PS1, PS2, 3 and 4 would have called their new console the PS5. and if its like what xbox announced at E3 this year. it will be coming out around the holidays of 2020. but since its been several months after xbox announced their new console. in order to meet that, it will be rushed into production and will probably have something go wrong with it.

either way. with games becoming more and more complex and detailed one this I would like to see is a much bigger HD or SSD than just 1TB.

From a person who bought a PS4 first & then later bought a XB1x, I must admit Sony has had the one up on XB when revealing specs for the new Sony PS5 each time. I was excited to hear about SSD HD on the PS5 & the super fast load times for Spiderman, then by the time MS decided to reveal SSD on the XB2 it was already dry news. Love the adaptive features on the PS5 controller and I hope Sony will surprise us with backwards compatibility from PS1-PS5 & PSP/PSVita on the new PS5, as I think that will make me buy a PS5 before an XB1. But for now gonna be happy with getting a XB1 to carry over all my many XBOG, XB360, & XB1 games to my XB2.

man, thinking back on all the old conversations i had on here a few years ago when people were claiming ps5 wouldn't release until 2022/23 at the earliest lol... you guys were out to lunch and likely still have no foresight. try not to insult people who know better than you next time lol

the biggest mystery now is the price point. my prediction is $400usd/$500cnd so long as the 25% tariffs don't happen. i really hope there is no pro model until 2023.

on a sidenote, ps5 will have released before star citizen is out. now THAT is funny!

@Xristophoros: Good games will not be out til 2022 at the earliest, so the PS5 releasing in 2020 doesn't matter really.

@srfilk86: I didn't have a problem finding games to play since the launch of ps4 and I'm sure it will be the same story here or better l.

@srfilk86: no, i think sony learned its lesson this gen. they likely have a better release schedule planned... horizon 2 has proabably been in development for 2 years now and might be ready in year 1 of ps5... god of war 2 is likely making good progress as well and we could see it in a similar timeframe. bluepoint games already announced that their game is deep into development -- whatever it may be. i would expect at least one major sony exclusive out before the end of 2020 and perhaps two more in 2021. also, i will not be playing cyberpunk on my base ps4... i have a feeling it will run poorly. such a game deserves to be played on ps5. perhaps we will have a ps5 port released at launch of the ps5 among other enhanced ports... there will be stuff to play on ps5 early on....

@Xristophoros: No way HZD2 and GoW2 are coming out a year after launch. It took GoW nearly six years to be developed. Same with HZD. I could see the sequels coming out in 2022 at the earliest.

@srfilk86: don't underestimate all the pre-planning that goes into a new IP... working out the engine requirements, mechancis, art direction, conept art... the process is often twice as long as a sequel that follows. Now that the hard work is done, it won't be unrealistic to expect a horizon sequel to take about 3.5 years. the same general rule would apply to god of war so long as the sequel will be utilizing the same general mechanics and engine etc which they likely will.

@srfilk86: Exactly. Lots of people will still be playing PS4 even after the PS5 comes out. Hell people still play PS3.

@Xristophoros: I also thought it would come out sooner rather than later. And I also agree that there's no need for a pro model anytime soon. The ps5 will be exciting enough for now.

@pcps4xb: that will usually result in deveopers not spending enough time on both console skus... we will all suffer for it with bugs and poor performance. consoles were better when the deveopers only had a single sku to worry about.

I love the idea of the new controller. Really seems like a step forward . The standard rumble just feels stale and I don't know why I even keep it on anymore. Seems like it could inspire the devs as well.

A sign a good faith by Sony would be to enable upgrades for people buying the PS4 digital versions of last generation games (Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us 2, etc) to a digital PS5 improved version. Otherwise, I'd rather wait for Ghost of Tsushima and Call of Duty 2020 being released on the new platforms and not pay double for the same game.

@mark0: the console should just normally run the game better. But if you're talking about devs going in and reworking everything to make it look even better then it doesn't make sense to do it for free.

Playstation 5 was always going to be the name of the console. Sometimes it is the best to keep the name simple. The only time Sony tried something different was with the Playstation Vita.

The fifth Playstation console will be expensive so start saving up now.
