Sony Reportedly Blocking Subscription Stacking Of PS Plus And PS Now Ahead Of Service Revamp

Some people are reporting error codes when attempting to extend their subscriptions, possibly to avoid people stacking their subscriptions.

Sony has reportedly disabled PlayStation Plus pre-paid code redemption for existing subscribers ahead of the transition to the new tiered version of PlayStation Plus in June.

As reported by Eurogamer and PushSquare, some users are unable to redeem their prepaid PS Plus and PS Now subscription cards, presumably to stop users from locking in the new tiers of PS Plus at a cheaper price. In the FAQ for the new PS Plus, PlayStation states that users who are subscribed to both PS Plus and PS Now will be switched over to the highest tier, PS Plus Premium, when the transition is made. The length of the subscription will be based on whichever subscription is longer. Since the service was announced, users have begun stacking their subscriptions in anticipation of them being converted to the new service.

Now Playing: New PS Plus Feels Boring Compared to Xbox Game Pass

Now, it seems like PlayStation is blocking users from redeeming cards and from extending their subscriptions digitally as well. GameSpot can confirm that attempting to access an already active PS Plus subscription on a PS5 console results in an error code "CE-117773-6." Attempting to extend a PS Plus subscription on the PlayStation Store website results in an error stating the item can't be added to the cart because "You've already purchased this item."

GameSpot has reached out to Sony for comment.

According to PushSquare, Sony Support is confirming that the stacking of prepaid cards has been disabled. "I have checked the voucher and your account and can conclude that as of now there is a temporarily deactivated function for PS Plus/PS Now subscriptions which does not allow for stacking of either membership on already active memberships," a Sony Support rep told the outlet via email.

Prepaid cards don't expire and codes generated for online purchases don't expire for 12 months, so these codes will be usable once the new tiers launch. However it's unclear what tier these codes will be converted into or if their duration will be prorated.

Actually got this error last night just by trying to upload my save to the cloud. Haven't tried it again yet so hopefully it was just temporary. I haven't stacked any subs and my essential is expiring exqctly one month from now.

They seem to be blocking any new PS Now subscriptions if you are already a Plus member. I've been trying to add PS Now and it's being blocked from PS4, PS5, and PC. You just get redirected to the, "PS Now is merging with PS Plus," page. If you try to download a PS Now game, which should sign you up for the service, you get an error. I was already signed up for PS Plus until 2026, and wanted to add PS Now to my subscription before the merge. This is a bummer.

Well, expect another apology soon from Sony!

Honestly, it's like they want to be in this kind of trouble when they could easily avoid this by removing cards to be sold and agreeing to give the services to ppl who did buy the previous code.

@ceelogreen94: If you allowed this sort of thing to discourage you from buying a console, you'd never buy any gaming platform. Ever. They have ALL done something questionable.

@Barighm: Sony is trash company that is ripping you all off and yet you still come to their defense. This is the very definition of stupid. You have a great option in the Xbox family and you have the opportunity to make Sony do better by supporting the Xbox over them. Not to mention you have great opportunity to improve Microsoft gaming catalog as well but buying thier console over Sony.

@Barighm: maybe but Sony has done nothing but bullshit since this gen started in the last couple of months we have some of the worst microtransactions ever in gt7 then they nerfed rewards to push people towards said microtransactions then we have paid backwards compatibility and demos that right there is enough to keep someone from buying a PlayStation but that's just in two months time

@tbird7586: And MS prioritized expanding the Halo Infinite store instead of adding co-op and has awarded that psycho Kotick for a lifetime of douchery while Nintendo has shut down their old stores.

So, yeah, plenty of dumb shit from all three companies even within the last year.
