Sony Said No To PS4 EA Access Program Because It's Not "Good Value" for PlayStation Fans

"We don't think asking our fans to pay an additional $5 a month for this EA-specific program represents good value to the PlayStation gamer," Sony says.

Electronic Arts' recent announcement of EA Access, a Netflix-style program for Xbox One that allows you to pay $5 per month for unlimited access to a library of games, caught some off guard because it was only confirmed for Microsoft's console. As it turns out, Sony considered this program, but declined because the company felt it did not offer a strong enough value for PlayStation gamers.

"We evaluated the EA Access subscription offering and decided that it does not bring the kind of value PlayStation customers have come to expect," a Sony representative told GameSpot in a statement originally obtained by Game Informer.

According to Sony, PlayStation fans are more interested in subscription plans that give them access to a wide range of services, unlike EA Access, which will only offer up Electronic Arts games. "PlayStation Plus memberships are up more than 200% since the launch of PlayStation 4, which shows that gamers are looking for memberships that offer a multitude of services, across various devices, for one low price," the representative said. "We don't think asking our fans to pay an additional $5 a month for this EA-specific program represents good value to the PlayStation gamer."

A subscription to EA Access at $5/month or $30/year gets you unlimited access to games included in what EA calls The Vault, as well as discounts on digital content for EA games, and access to upcoming games five days before they are released to the general population. EA Access is currently in beta, and the current lineup of games includes titles like FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Battlefield 4, and Peggle 2. The service is expected to roll out to the everyone later on this summer.

EA Access is potentially damaging to GameStop, as it encourages digital spending. However, GameStop will sell EA Access memberships in its stores, and even though the retailer's stock value tumbled after yesterday's announcement, analysts say it's too early to know if EA Access will have a meaningful impact on GameStop's business.

Okay hear me out, Sony is being a piece of crap right now honestly like why would you think that its a bad idea for gamer's to pay an extra $5 a month for the top free games from EA. If i knew they would of turn down this offer i would have never bought a PS4. Okay. Basically 80% of PS4 players pay $70 dollars a year for your online bull crap (used to be $50). Top games now days are like $80 to $100. Who wouldn't want to pay $5 a month (or $30 a year) for unlimited access to all the newest games from EA. The reason you turned this down and everybody knows it is because of the cheap price EA offers and if it was more expensive then you would have taken the deal so don't keep going with this Not "Good Value" bull crap. If Sony would accept the deal i would buy it the minute it becomes available. Now people start wondering why everybody goes for Xbox and Not PlayStation, and this is why, because of crap reasons like this. Its like raising the price of the PS Plus by $20 wasn't enough they decide to turn down one of the best offers in history. I went with PS because at the time it was $50 dollars and not $70 like Xbox, but Xbox took this deal which made the price change of Xbox live not as bad, but PS decided to raise the price and do nothing else. Please take the offer for EA Access.

Sony, that's bullshit and you know it!

THE REASON memberships are up more than 200% is because you are FORCING people to buy memberships!! YOU CAN NOT play online WITHOUT a membership!!! So we all have to pay $50 a year EVERY SINGLE YEAR just to play online. And you offer so called "PERKS" with some shitty free games that not many people like. WOW yeah that's worth it....NOT!

Who wouldn't want to pay as little as $5 a month to play unlimited games? I sure as heck would! and I'm willing to bet if you did a pole the majority of playstation users would agree with me.

Sony, if you want to do a fair and accurate estimate of who ACTUALLY wants to buy a membership, change it so that everyone has online access without needing to purchase a membership. Make the memberships for the "perks" only. Then see what your numbers are!

Let's look at this objectively, the EA Access program is $5 and offers quality games to play! PS Plus has been cr4p for months now and is costing me a lot more for nothing, playing online should be free -.- Sony scams

@G4mBi7: This is crazy. Year 1 I personally bought 2 EA games for $120. More including the expansions for Battlefield 4. If I had EA Access on PS4 I could have saved more than $100. $30 a year is nothing for all of those games. I know lots of people who also play multiple sports games. $30 a year is an insanely good price for the top EA games. PS Plus just wants the full profits of digital downloads to stay WITH Playstation. Greedy aholes.

@G4mBi7: tbh i don't think anyone is paying 5/m 50/y for the games sony offers i think it's all about online play that we're forced to pay to have it. It's a shame but it's true.

With that being said i haven't seen anything noteworthy for my tastes, in the monthly games being offered it's mostly indie games. Until i see far cry 4 or something noteworthy being free or better yet all games having a 10% price drop using PS+ i don't think it's THAT great with the games they're offering so far.

With PS3 i didn't mind this seeing how Online play was free and the games they offered at times were great like "Spec Ops the line / Sleeping Dogs" ..etc but this idk

There's no good reason not to have choice. It is up to the gamer to decide if it's a good value or not. It seems to be quite popular on the Xbox One. The real reason is most likely that Sony was asking for too large of a cut.

So is Sony saying / doing this because this program by EA is in fact low value ??? Or is it doing this because it knows how much gamers hate EA; that way, by declining to partner with EA, Sony wins the hearts of haters. Or maybe I'm extrapolating too much !!!

If there's 1 thing Sony loves, it's a good smear campaign. EA cosy up to Microsoft, Sony bashes EA ... people won't wont want to buy the Xbox One for the EA Access.

Fact of the matter is, if EA Access came to the PS4, you can garentee that PS+ would lose all access to EA titles for their monthly handouts. That's the real reason Sony didn't want it & they're right about 1 thing, it's not good value. Not for the customer, but for Sony.

I am a sony fan, but, this comment and suggestion comes as a ***hurt to me. It is upto to the consumers to decide what is good or bad for them, stop acting a like a parent who knows best for their children lol. Anyways, I really think the truth is it can either mean 2 things:

1: They didn't get the deal and they have to make something up.

2: They declined the deal as it would take away a lot of the value from upcoming ps now service (I am not including plus as it is required for online so I doubt people will stop using it).

One of the neat things about PC gaming is that no one tells you what to do, as a consumer you make the decision, no corporate mind will make the decision for you.

This is bullshit pandering on Sony's part. The reason for not allowing EA Access on PS4 has nothing to do with concern for their consumers. They just don't want the competition on their own console, since this deal is basically in the same vein as PS Now and PS Plus.

EA had to have been demanding money to put this on the consoles. Even though they are about the worst company out there, they sell alot of games, I'm sure they think they are worth a lot more than what they are. I bought 4 of their games on ps4 when it first launched, after the problems I had with battlefield 4, they will probably be my last.

No thanks, I can buy the cheap older games and the new games will just be a trial. Plus whenever EA gets shafted its a good thing. I don't support companies that don't like to pay their workers what they are owed.

No interest.

It's a bunch of old games that you could easily go get out of a bargain bin and then subsequently sell back when you're done.

Its for the best.

Anytime EA have a "business" idea nothing good follows. It turns out to be for their benefit and not the benefit of gamers.

EA are not to be trusted.

examples.

.online pass aka online ass.

.taking servers offline for games that are not even old so they can try and force people to buy the latest iteration.

.day 1 dlc (other publishers do this now but EA pride themselves in pioneering these kinds of antigamer foolishness).

.closing down good developers.

.attempting to buy take2 interactive and when they got turned down they tried a hostile takeover of take2 interactive so they could own gta and 2kgames including 2ks sports games. One publisher to rule them all, No thanks!

.selling games that don't even work.

.They were the biggest supporter of microshaft when they announced a console that didn't work without an internet connection and a console that wouldn't allow you to play the games you own without permission from the corporation.

Nice one SONY for saying NO to EA.

"microshaft".... yeah you aren't a fanboy.

The online requirement would have worked out great for most people. Digital game sharing? An online marketplace where people could buy and sell used games digitally?

Selling games that don't even work? You use Take2 as an example of who EA should not own. Did you forget about GTA 3's buggy PC launch? how about GTA online? They aren't exactly innocent here.

This service was an OPTION to gamers, but Sony decided you don't want the option and they should decide for you. You want to stick it to EA? Let Sony carry this service. Let EA invest money into it. If every gamer feels as you do, it will crash and burn sticking EA with the bill. You seem to hate Microsoft for not giving you options, but then you praise Sony for the same BS.

Besides, it was Sony who patented the online-only no used games tech that Microsoft copied. You might want to do a little research before posting this stuff here:

@rolla020980

You say "This service was an OPTION to gamers" but your too stupid to realise this could have been the start of EA trying to turn gaming from a product that you own into a service that you pay a monthly fee to access. If EA could lock the gaming industry down and charge everyone a fee to play games they would, for the reasons i stated before. EA are NOT to be trusted.

"The online requirement would have worked out great for most people" "most people"? lol Most people didn't want this so-called "online requirement" lol people with sense call it DRM and FORCED ONLINE, thats why microshaft had to 180 fast, or have you not been paying attention to the gaming industry for the past year!

you use GTA 3 as an example of a "buggy" game? lol (worked fine on ps2) GTA 3 is one of the most influential games ever made it practically started a whole genre called open world/sandbox. Think before posting such an idiotic comment.

"Besides, it was Sony who patented the online-only no used games tech that Microsoft copied. You might want to do a little research before posting this stuff here:" First of all its unlikely that microsoft "copied" them. and secondly I already knew about that information and it changes NOTHING.Sony DID NOT implement it, microsoft DID. And if your such a champion of "The online requirement" you wouldn't mind sony patenting it would you:p.

YOU might want to think a little before posting such nonsense.

Sony is lying, they aren't saying no because "it's not a good value" $5 per month isn't that much for unlimited game streaming, and Sony already has a service for that they will be charging for access to

<< LINK REMOVED >> Except that it's not game streaming and the reason why Sony probably said no has nothing to do with Playstation Now. If EA has a subscription service on their console it makes it much less likely that they'll offer any games on Playstation Plus. Sony wants those games to offer an incentive for Playstation Plus. Besides, I already own quite a few free EA games because of Playstation Plus. Whats the point of paying $90 when I already get that value from $60? I'm sure a few people will be legitimately upset about this, but I really don't see this service doing well and most of the people who are complaining about this probably have no interest in subscribing to it anyway.

All of these free game services (at least for MS and PS) are not worth it. Every time I go to a used gamestore, which there are 3 near me, I see all of these games for really cheap prices. The only games that aren't cheap are the current and last gen Nintendo games. I really like MS and PS, but because the market is flooded with their software it makes it ultra cheap, but that also makes these services and ultra rippoff. People need to wake up to the world around them.
