Sony struggling to attract third-party support for Vita - Report

Sony Computer Entertainment worldwide studio president Shuhei Yoshida says publisher is finding it hard to attract third-party support for portable consoles; hopes Assassin's Creed will prove good recruitment tool when it launches on the Vita.

Sony has reportedly admitted that it is having a hard time attracting third-party developers to make games for its PlayStation Vita console.

Sony reportedly wants more third-party devs to support the Vita.
Sony reportedly wants more third-party devs to support the Vita.

In an interview with PlayStation: The Official Magazine (as spotted by blog The Silent Chief), Sony Computer Entertainment worldwide studio president Shuhei Yoshida is reported as saying:

"We're having a more difficult time than we had anticipated in terms of getting support from third-party publishers, but that's our job."

Yoshida then went on to say that the publisher will continue to try to recruit third-party developers and pointed to the upcoming Assassin's Creed III: Liberation as a game that could entice other developers to see the benefit of working with the Vita.

"We will continue to talk to development communities and publishing partners, and tell them why Vita can provide a great experience for the IPs they have, and I hope the Assassin's Creed game will prove that," Yoshida reportedly told the magazine.

Sony was under pressure to drop the price of the Vita upon its North American launch earlier this year, with the system reaching 1.2 million units sold globally by February 26, 2012.

Earlier this year, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto weighed in on the Vita's problems, saying that the system's software is not matching the abilities of its hardware.

In July, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said he is eager to get Borderlands 2 on the Vita.

@mrboone01 @Mik_b Yeah, that used to be one of Sony's selling points that I enjoyed when they copied Nintendo was the backwards capability. But now you have the repay for a game to do that. What the heck?

Not surprised, Vita is a piece of crap. Sony poorly planned the system, throwing it into the market as if telling their fans "Come and get your slop." And Sony, unlike Nintendo, can't make a system work with only first-party games. Release a Mario game, everyone buys it. Release Uncharted, sell a system or two, people finish the game, sell it back to GameStop, Vita is now an overpriced paper weight. Honestly, the PSP wasn't much of a success. Why make a new one? It'll only inherit the PSP's spot in the back corner of GameStop, collecting dust.

The Vita certainly has my moral support and it won't be long before they have my money for a copy of said hardware. Though tablet games and such are a prolific market I will always want controls such as consoles provide, pads and buttons and all, since there are many games that benefit from that setup.

Main reason I haven't bought a Vita is because my PSP is still alive. Alone, MGS:Portable Ops Plus used 300 hours of my time.

Ironic that such good PSP1000 games would make buying the Vita unnecessary.

It has CoD and Assassin's Creed on board. Plus Tecmo Koei has shown a lot of support. Is there really many other third party developers worth attracting at this point in the game? THQ is constantly in hot water and Sega isn't quite pumping out AAA blockbusters. EA and Square Enix are about all it's missing.

@Ghetto_ninja Call Of Duty for the Vita will be another bomb FPS. Nihilistic Studios is devloping the game. They are the same developers who made Resistance Burning Skies. Activision is not even promoting the game on their website.

that doesnt sound like it is going to be a winner its pretty bad when your own company wont get behind a game, the vita might not be along to much longer if it has no games to play on it

What i seem to realize is that since Sony is trying to gather 3rd party support now, that must mean there aren't any Vita games in development (besides the ones already announced). That is a real bummer for gamers when it takes like 2 years to create a game, and they haven't even started yet!! Not including PSN games, though.

@Razer361 I think it's a bit too late for that. I really wouldn't consider iPad, iPhone or iWhatever a direct competitor because the games they offer are cheap, easy to make and it's not primarily a gaming system. You won't find game like ACIII: Liberation or COD or Mario etc on those devices. Vita and 3DS are aimed more at people who want a little more than a time-waster on the go. As for the 3DS, it already has a vastly superior library even though games barely come out faster for it than for the Vita, is cheaper to obtain and does not use over-priced proprietary storage units and has a huge lead of about 20:1. I think most third party developers will gravitate towards the 3DS; even though it is not as powerful as a Vita it has a much larger install base and is where the money is. It's DS vs PSP all over again.

Because it wastes resources on useless gadgets to compete with other companies who already have that market on lock down. As I've always said about this mentality (sarcastically)

"Why be good at one thing, when you can be terrible at everything?"

This seems to be the matra of the new gaming industry.

problem is that the PS Vita is a high dollar gadget. Those that can afford this little gizmo really don't have the time to play "on the go" games as when they once did in the golden age of the gameboy. See? back then, your folks were driving you around places while you sat in the backseat with time in your hands. so that was perfect to fire up metroid, zelda or any other game that was a delight to play. Unfortunately, the demographic this device is aimed for don't really have to time to sit around in the back seat and play for the duration of a road trip. they are actually the drivers, taking their families on this road trips. why not buy the thingamajig for the kids? cuz it costs a pretty penny, and the games aren't that great. A catch-22, really. It's sad.

@jinza Dang, if that isn't the best post I've read. That's one of Sony's biggest issues, the age range they're trying and failing to reach. Not everyone had $300+ dollars sitting in their bank to buy this. Shoot if it wasn't for the Persona game coming out, I'd still be only playing my PSP. The PSN is the only thing the Vita has going for it so far, which is making me wonder if the PS Plus is a solid investment at this time...

Lets see why is it hard to find third party support for the vita because it wasnt a complete success why didnt it sell well? Their are way to many childish entertaining games on it that don't speak to core gamers the marketed things like little deviants and ect which dont really intrest people what they need to focus on is getting really creative mature games on their. Games like blazblue, corpse party, final fantasy 7 really made owning a vita fun because they hardcore mature games. I mean really which would you pick a possible made new final fantasy for your vita or little deviants?

@blackwing55 They aren't only trying to get the core gamers to buy it, that's why you see more family friendly games than M rated ones. For the most part M rated games don't fare very well on handhelds. I think we are seeing a trend in all of gaming where the "Big 3" try to aim for the widest audience possible, and with parents today smarter about video games in general than my parents were they will know that GTA or COD is not for their little Billy to play.

@ExplicitMike If you want to continue on like a child about then go right ahead. I can;t stop anything you or anyone else says as long as it is within rules of the site.

I was simply suggesting for the integrity of the website and as a courtesy to everyone else on it that it would be nice to not have a large wall of comments that dominates the discussions with just two people bickering.

I have nothing against having a discussion or talking for a while back and forth. Just use good judgement on whether it may have carried on a little long.

Sony needs consistent 3rd party support. Having large gaps between AAA titles does NOT help their cause.

I adore my Vita, but even I feel the burn of this gap of software since launch.... then again, I felt it even more with the 3DS, but then we got a slew of decent titles that made all memory of that go right away. This too will happen with Vita, it's just a matter of time til we have that handful of real system sellers. Sound Shapes certainly looks awesome, lets just have a few more.

@ExplicitMike I actually have. I will say it to anyone that gets out of hand. With the old comment system that went by pages there was an entire page with just his comments and I voiced my opinion on the matter. I have made mention of it multiple times to him in the past and to others as well.

Normally skipping it is everyone's option, it just becomes a hassles when it takes up multiple pages on the screen that people have to scroll past.

I kind of agree with the creator of Mario since it's one of the reasons I've been holding off on getting a Vita. Sure, it has awesome capabilities, but if the games don't take advantage of it then I have no reason to get it. I realize that's easier said then done right at launch, but Sony could have probably tried a bit harder with 1st party titles (other than Uncharted, Wipeout, and Resistance there really isn't anything that is overly noteworthy or couldn't be done on a tablet).

Hopefully COD will be able to take advantage of the dual analog sticks and have online play without lag to show other devs that games can be made for it (as that seemed to be a problem with the PSP, which of course only had one control stick).

IMO, what the Vita needs is a big WRPG along the lines of Skyrim/Oblivion or even a Souls game along the lines of Demon's/Dark Souls. If people see the system can do stuff like that then I wouldn't be surprised if more people become interested in it.

no, not really. However the most recent MH4 for now is a 3ds exclusive. Developing for vita is just horribly expensive if you wanna get the hardware to shine and PLAIN STUPID when you know the top selling games only sold 1 million copies, when you need twice that amount to get your cash back on a true HD game. Sony wont make it happen unless they absorb the developing costs from devs, and that will be too much for SONY.

Sonys biggest misstep was not having there huge back-catalog help them out at launch, the few games that have been released for the vita so far has been pretty good (nothing earth shattering yet, but it's still early days) but they're literally hundreds of psp, psOne, minis, and psn games Online, the vita should have been able to play all of them right out of the gate.

The Vita is an Amazing piece of tech, pretty much the best portable game system on the market, i just feel it should be able to play all portable games, including ISO and android games. (maybe I'm just naive)

I don't really see the point of the back touch thing... But whatever!

I just wish I could get all my psp games on it. I have this shiny Vita with 2 games to play because I don't feel like spending more money to download games I already have.

Oh well, I'm looking forward to P4G. That should hold me over for more than long enough to figure something else out :]
