Sony Treating PS4 No Man's Sky Like a First-Party Game

"We are going to put the full weight of PlayStation behind it."

Sony has pledged to "put the full weight of PlayStation" behind upcoming ambitious indie game No Man's Sky as part of the company's effort to treat the PlayStation 4 title like a first-party game, even if it does come to other platforms later.

"No Man's Sky has been treated as if it was from one of our internal studios," Sony UK managing director Fergal Gara told MCV. "We have been working very closely with the developers and bringing it into our release program as if we had made it."

"We are not going to treat it any differently and we are going to put the full weight of PlayStation behind it," he added. "If it all comes together as well as expected, it will be treated like a first-party release; it is not a self-published small indie title on the platform."

No Man's Sky is a timed-exclusive for PS4, launching first on Sony's new console before coming to PC later down the road. The game is due out later this year for PS4, while a release date for the PC edition has not been announced. It remains to be seen if developer Hello Games will also bring the game to Xbox One.

For its part, Microsoft has said that it "would love" to see No Man's Sky come to Xbox One.

It wouldn't be the first time that Sony treats a multiplatform title like a first-party game, as the company did the same with Bungie's shooter Destiny.

Also in the interview, Gara reveals that Sony may end up releasing a boxed version of No Man's Sky, though this has not been confirmed.

“It is more about making the right decision for the right title at the right time," he explained. “It is entirely possible that we will release some of these games together, digitally and physically, or one after another, but it will be decided on a title-by-title basis."

For more on No Man's Sky, an open-world space game that will be truly massive thanks to its procedurally generated worlds, check out GameSpot's previous coverage and some images in the gallery below.

According to gamesindustryinternational, polygon Sony and Microsoft have both been quietly pouring money into studios new and old. Sony especially is outfitting Japans devastated gaming developers with money and talent, also pooling whats left of the Australian devs. This reminds me of the 95' era when the 'real console wars' raged on, with Nintendo, Sony, and Sega pumping as much cash at any studio that moved or had the balls to bring a game forward. That time allowed the proliferation of so many new and interesting titles during the 97', 98', 99' years. The shear number of new studios at that time was wild and the games...... just amazing.

I doubt we will ever see a time like that again, but with this new influx of cash, I think years 3 and 4 will see some strong new IPs from Sony and on other platforms as well. Mobil and indie developers are also thinking of cross-platform, and this great era of PCrpg rejuvenation.. Renaissance.. has been wonderful. This is a great time for games - I remember when a console was released with 2 launch titles and after a year only had dozen under its belt. Now the next gen consoles have over 220+ games available now -from AAA to indie, from action to rpg, from digital to retail and in between. It is a great time for this hobby we love so much, I know my gaming backlog grows longer each day.

One thing I find disappointing though is the very poor quality of PC ports from console- half unfinished, and the rest with such poor optimization you might as well play it on console or wait months for updates and patches. AAA games in the past used to be handled very well from console to pc now they are rushed out the door. Still yet though my GOG Witcher 3 - what few complaints I have are drops in a ocean.

Um no kidding :). Still the comments in the article are another indication of how this game doesn't really have that indie underdog angle that many like to think it does.

A Microsoft representative was later heard drunkenly stumbling down a corridor, mumbling incoherently to himself about Crackdown 3, Fable Legends and 6 hour install times.

I think this just means they're gonna put a $60 price tag on the game instead of a indie $30 tag.

The game looks really boring. If there were any real gameplay in it, they would have said so.

I'd really like to have more info on the gameplay. All I see on the trailers is a person getting inside a ship, arriving on a new planet, watching some weird animals, and then back to the ship. That's all.

@Vodoo: It has everything to do with what he said, because that is the big hook for the game. Exploring a giant procedurally generated galaxy.

That isn't all of the game. That alone is not enough.

Gameplay has been described in detail but no one played attention when it was spoken.

Ugh...what's the point of console makers or gamers even breathing? It's going to be on PC...it's going to be better on PC (just like everything else EVER) and it's going to be for kids on the consoles...nothing new to see here.

I wish I waited to buy gta on the pc. Now I have to buy it again to get all the sweet mods. God of war is a dead franchise to me. UC3 was weak. Infamous and kill zone I can do without. I will not be buying a PS4 after upgrading my pc.

Don't get me wrong I was a PC gamer but thank dear almighty God I bought PS3 and now PS4. Actually 3 more words: Red Dead Redemption. Oh, oh, 3 more words: Metal Gear Solid...

PS4 has no games that's why they are treating third party games as first party.

@Mirimon78: 370 indie games, indie games aren't the same as triple A games people buy performance capable consoles to play triple A games not indie games that you can play on your Ipad. This generation of consoles is a real let down all the way around.

Cute, but:

1. Not all, or even most of these are indie. Less than 1/3 are indie

2. You speak as though indie are bad... do not confuse indie for mobile games. This industry owes its creation to indie... Many of the most memorable games are indie, many of the most played titles in history are indie, the highest rated game on the xb1 is in fact an indie, and one of msft's greatest money makers in their gaming ventures (following xbl subs) comes from an indie... meanwhile, all but a few triple A titles are trash and/or rehash...

3. People buy consoles to have fun no matter who made or published the games..

4. You sould like another product of the No Child Left Behind act.. a self-entitled clueless twit. You are an embarrassment to gamers and people in general, go away before you hurt your already low self-esteem.

@jimmydonegood: You're right. However, it seems only Nintendo is capable of publishing a good number of first party games nowadays.
