Update: Sony's escalation team has decided to pay a full refund, in this case. It is unclear whether the company will make any broader changes to its refund policies.

Original Story Follows

Questions have been raised over the standard of Sony's customer services after it was discovered that the victim of a PlayStation 4 hack would not be fully refunded the $600 that was stolen from him.

"The Sony representative told me that they are only permitted to refund up to $150"

Reddit user Kadjar

A Reddit user, going by the name Kadjar, explained that he awoke on Wednesday morning with a series of email alerts stating that about $600 of content had been purchased through his account. He also discovered that his PlayStation 4 has been deactivated from PSN and another system, of which the location is unknown, has seized control as the primary system on the account.

Having spoken to Sony customer services on several occasions throughout the day, his criticisms of its response was summarized accordingly:

  • Sony will only refund $150 of the $600 that was taken.
  • The money will be in PSN credit, and not refunded into the bank.
  • If the user escalates the payment dispute with his bank, his account will be banned.
  • If his account is banned, his purchased licences for games, such as The Last of Us Remastered, will be wiped.
  • If the licences are wiped, there is no way of restoring them.

The user's PlayStation 4 cannot be designated as the primary console for another 6 months, meaning it is locked out of the account until then.

If a PlayStation 4 loses its place as the primary console, users must wait six months to reverse the policy.
If a PlayStation 4 loses its place as the primary console, users must wait six months to reverse the policy.

Readers on Reddit have voiced outrage at what they consider poor protection from account hacks. Others have urged that this story highlights how important it is that users protect their account with a very strong password, due to the lack of protection should something go wrong.

GameSpot has contacted Sony to discuss the matter or provide some clarification.

Kadjar has published images of his online chat with Sony customer services, and highlights three other cases where users have complained about similar issues.

His post reads:

"This morning, I started receiving emails indicating a number of purchases on my PSN account. As the transactions came in, one-by-one, it became immediately clear that my account had been hacked. I immediately logged into PSN and removed my card from the account, changed my email and password, and simultaneously launched support chats with both Sony and my bank.

"The Sony representative told me that they are only permitted to refund transactions of up to $150. He also informed me that I could dispute the charges with my bank, but by doing so, my account would be banned from PSN. As a result, I would permanently lose all of my purchases, including the Last of Us Remastered.

"He also informed me that my existing PS4 had been deactivated from the network this morning, and that a new one had been activated. When I asked him to deactivate that new, mystery PS4, he said he could not. I then turned on my PS4, logged in with my new credentials, and attempted to activate my PS4 with my account, but it informed me that I could not activate it as long as there was another PS4 bound to my account.

"I called customer support, hoping for some clarification. The agent informed me that there is indeed a refund investigation underway, but that it will be limited to $150, and that it would be credited to my PSN wallet, not my bank account.

"Furthermore, my account will not be able to activate a new system for 6 months, per Sony policy. I'm completely locked out of my own account until that date. I then asked about what would happen if I got my bank to reverse the charges, and he informed me that it would result in a banned account. I asked if there would be any way to restore my purchases, and he told me that there would not be, but I 'only have the Last of Us and a couple of the monthly free deal games,' so it's not a big deal."

Several Reddit users have offered Kadjar copies of their games, which he has thanked them for, but declined.

"My goal here is bring attention to a few of Sony's bad customer service policies in the hopes that they'll change them," he said.

Good Lord. After all the public embarrassments / hackings / PSN outages / etc. Sony's endured over the past few years, you'd think they'd be going out of their way to please and retain their client base. Not pulling morally bankrupt stuff like this. EPIC FAIL, Sony!!!!!! And I am a lifelong supporter no less...........

Well it seems like nobody knows how he got hacked in the first place. I bet he fell for one of those "You'll get $50 PSN credit if you type in your account details in this form" If he did that and IF he did, then he really only have himself to blame.

He should be able to dispute the charges still but Sony will wipe out all of his games, even the ones purchased prior, if he disputes it. Sony is pretty much forcing him to pay them $600 or lose his catalog and there's no excuse for that.

I have had a debt card linked to my XBOX live account and have not done the same with PSN because of the hacking stories that have spanned the PS3 and PS4 ( I know xbox live has been susceptible as well ) and the response is always "well no one's personal information was compromised" - first - of course that would be a PR response and second how would they know what a hacker obtained or didn't obtain... guy should get his bank involved lawyer up and maybe Sony and or Microsoft will get sued and devoted more resources to protecting their customers online accounts

Don't see how anyone is surprised by stuff like this, console makers make consoles to suck money out of you, and if they can find a loophole to **** you over then they will, its been like this since the 7th generation of consoles and its only going to get worse, there is no reason to support such companies anymore besides blind fanboy/girl loyalty, you already made your first mistake by buying the system itself lol.

Why in the Hell you would use a Credit Card when Prepaid cards like PSN/XBL are much safer then putting your credit card at risk?

1. not everyone can buy them where they live.

2. It's Sony's job and they are required by law to protect user information stored on their servers.

This is why I tell everyone that I refuse to buy a Playstation. It has nothing to do with the hardware, its Sony. Their customer service is a joke. My friend had an issue with his PS3 and called them with it on speaker phone. Here is how the conversation went.

Sony Employee: "Thank you for calling, what can I help you with today?"
Friend: "I'm having problems with my PS3."
Sony Employee: "Oh. We are sorry to hear that. *hangs up*"

People can bash Microsoft all they want, but at least their customer service will actually help you

So, they'll investigate, and if it turns out he isn't lying they'll refund the full amount to his card, I mean they said that in the chat that he screen grabbed! I fail to see the problem here. It's absurd to think they'd credit his card $600 without looking into the issue first.

Simple miscommunication being blown out of proportion, possibly even so this guy can get his 5 minutes of fame. I would like to see the end result of this though.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> It actually wasn't all that clear. After mentioning the $150 credit on the PSN account thing, they also said that an investigation would be done and that if the refund was accepted that all charges would be returned to his card, not his PSN wallet. So it's a little unclear, but it does sound like an investigation will take place, and if the charges are actually fraudulent (because, sadly, you can't just believe people these days) he'll get his money back. That's not all that uncommon and I think it's a simple misunderstanding that's being blown out of proportion.

That's a new low from Sony. More importantly, it goes to show that not only is it easy to hack Sony's services (not just the PS4), but they don't give a damn about fixing it. You'd think that between the 2011 hack and the recent one involving "The Interview" that they would have improved things. No company is immune to hacking, but that's not an excuse for Sony's attitude and overall laziness.

Something that really stuck out: "If the user escalates the payment dispute with his bank, his account will be banned." Am I reading this right? If the user tries to fight things then Sony will make things worse for him? Talk about tyranny.
