Sony's Jim Ryan Confirms Nixxes Is Bringing PlayStation Games To PC

The Sony president and CEO said PlayStation and Nixxes are in the "early stages" of bringing the company's IP to PC.

Following the acquisition earlier this month, Sony president and CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed that the Netherlands-based studio Nixxes Software is working on porting PlayStation games to PC, according to a translation by VGC.

Ryan said in a Famitsu interview published on July 28 that PlayStation is "happy to be in the early stages of bringing our IP to the PC, and look forward to working with Nixxes to help us do that." Nixxes is known for porting games to PC and has worked on big-name titles like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Marvel's Avengers.

Sony scooped up Nixxes earlier this month following its acquisition of Helsinki-based developer Housemarque at the end of June. While the buyout amount remains undisclosed, PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst praised Nixxes for its "deep technical expertise and vast experience."

Nixxes joins "PlayStation Studios Technology, Creative & Services Group to provide high-quality in-house technical and development capabilities for PlayStation Studios," Sony said in a press release announcing the buyout.

After PlayStation dropped Horizon Zero Dawn on PC last year, Sony said more of its games could make their way to the platform. In fact, Days Gone hit PC on May 18. God of War is streamable on PC for those with an active PS Now membership. (It's worth noting that God of War on PC is not a port and has not been confirmed as part of these efforts.) And documentation discovered in May found that Uncharted 4: A Thief's End may be the next PlayStation exclusive to launch on PC in the future.

PlayStation did clarify, however, that it wouldn't release it's games on PC right at launch. Meanwhile, Xbox has become more aggressive with its efforts in bringing games to PC in addition to consoles.

Looks like Sony is finally planning to abandon PS Now. Seems that selling games for PC is more profitable for them than making people play them through PS Now after all. Who would have thought?

@daidochus: Nintendo is more stodgy, and certainly more protective of their IP, but sooner or later they won't have a a choice either, especially if Valve's new PC Gaming platform takes off.

@lonesamurai00: Indeed, just a matter of time for Nintendo to follow suit. After all, we are called the MasterRace not just for nothing.

How about you have them work on backwards compatibility on the PS5 first? The thing needs to play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games from the discs. Maybe add in compatibility for PSP and PS Vita digital games as well.

The PS5 is a poorer system for lacking this basic feature which should have come standard on it!!!!

@dragonsama: That's part of the reason why I went with a PC over a PS4. The other is paid online play.

@dragonsama: Agreed, I have a massive collection of almost 200 ps3 blue-ray disc's but no way of playing them since my three ps3's are all dead(YLOD $uck$) and my ps-4 has no BC.

Yeah sure ps3's Cell-Broadband Engine would be a b1@tch to emulate on x86-64... but hey wait one moment... There Is A ps3 Cell Emulator on PC so why can't Sony have ps3 BC on ps4 And ps5 ?

@dragonsama: You want a studio specialized in making PC ports, that was bought for the specific purpose of making PC ports and have them work on backward compatibility.. how does that make any sense. Also Sony doesn't give a shit about anything but PS5 and PS4 anyway

@dragonsama: I can't keep up with all the backwards compatibility nonsense so forgive my ignorance but does the PS5 play PS4 games? I can't remember.

@jenovaschilld: Quite a few actually.

Personally I have

184 PS1 games

332 PS2 games

315 PS3 games. (digital not included probably another couple of hundred)

416 PS4 games. (digital not included probably another couple of hundred)

Sony already has Emulator tech for PS1 and PS2 games and the obviously have a working one for PS3 considering those games can be streamed via psnow. I doubt they have PS3s in a datacenter running the games on them.

There's no reason why these Discs/Digital games can't run natively off the PS5 it has powerful enough hardware to do it.

@dragonsama: Of course there's no reason why they couldn't make you play those old discs on a PS5. Same as there is no reason why they would do so. Unless you want to pay them for the right to play those discs you already own on their new console. Nobody is going to give you this functionality if there's no profit in it. And PS3 games are no longer being sold in stores. So if you want to use your old discs, get a Blu Ray drive for your PC and play them on an emulator. Or just a PS3 with a working drive. Or install a cfw on it and just download any games you aleady own legally.

@dragonsama: Ah I C, and you bought a $500 (short supply) 9th gen console and you expect it to play those 20+ yr old games you have collected. AND of course, logically, you also drop kicked all of your other consoles out the door as soon as the 9th gen console launched because .... (who would still have those past gen consoles) with a new one just out) with hundreds of past gen discs. And this is why the 10+ million consoles that have sold should also be compatible... because hey.. we need something to play madden 2003 on.

I love backwards compatibility, though rarely ever needed it, but I still have a hard time understanding those who are so angst by the need for it, so soon after launch.

@jenovaschilld: Do you really not understand why being able to play all last gen games - which is still pretty much all games out there today and 99% of all games still being released this year and maybe next, too - is such a big deal? Especially since you can play them at higher resolutions and better framerates. Mabye you like to collect hardware from many different gens in your place but personally I'd prefer having it all available in one system if possible. And thankfully Sony has finally smartened up and added that functionality back in.

@Atzenkiller: It would be nice if my music cassettes worked in all my trucks I have owned over the last 30+yrs, but I guess that is something I can let slide now in 2021.

Look I am not a fanboy, and just play games. But.. And thankfully Sony has finally smartened up and added that functionality back in.... Back in ..? Look the PS2 plays psone games except for a few, the ps3 played the majority of the ps2 games, but later on took the chip out and just left the cell processor. The ps4 could not play the ps3, the architecture was just too different. I mean it is hard to fault Nintendo when they went from cartridge to disc. And now the ps5 plays ps4.

If what you want is a new 9th gen ps5 to play all of your physical discs ... that is fine. But that is low, incidental, minor request from a console that seems to have lots of exclusives each gen and concentrates more on new games, then playing ones from the last gen.

@alastor529: Well, that's pretty much how it's always been. Though I don't remember any other console having such a bad start lineup as the PS5. Demon's Souls is the only PS5 exclusive that I even know of. And it's only an exclusive because Sony needed something to help promote the PS5.
