Soul Calibur 6 Announced, First Gameplay Details Revealed

A tale of swords and souls eternally retold.

Bandai Namco has announced SoulCalibur VI, a new entry in its weapon-based fighting game series, coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2018. The game made its debut at The Game Awards, where a teaser was shown. The video featured a young-looking Mitsurugi battling Sophitia. During the battle the two weapons the characters wielded glowed different colors, indicating there will be some additional mechanic added to the traditional weapon-oriented battles.

According to Bandai Namco, SoulCalibur VI will have an "epic" story mode, revamped gameplay mechanics, and "dynamic fights enhanced by cinematic-styled combat." One of the key new gameplay changes is the introduction of "Reversal Edge," which allows players to "defend against the opponent's attack and directly counter with a powerful strike highlighted through a dynamic camera." SoulCalibur VI is being developed in Unreal Engine, just as Tekken 7 was, and it looks like the game has also inherited the dynamic camera angle.

There was also a tease for what looks to be a new character, who held a long staff-like weapon with blades on each end. Bandai Namco has said SoulCalibur VI will have a roster of "returning characters and newcomers," so that mysterious figure may be someone entirely new to the series.

"Two decades after its first iteration, SoulCalibur VI returns to its roots while bringing brand-new gameplay features to the fight," Bandai Namco says in a press release. "Travel through the signature 16th century stages and experience the struggle for the two legendary swords using a complete roster of returning iconic SoulCalibur characters, along with some newcomers."

SoulCalibur V, the last mainline entry in the series, was released for PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. Before that, an HD version of SoulCalibur 2 was released for last-generation consoles. Since then, developer and publisher Bandai Namco has focused on its other major fighting game series, Tekken.

Tekken 7 was released in June 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and features a full story campaign that incorporates Akuma, one of the main antagonists of the Street Fighter series, into its mythos. Since then, Tekken 7 has added another guest character in Geese Howard to its roster. Geese is a mainstay from SNK's Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series.

Guest characters are something that Bandai Namco featured heavily in previous entries in the SoulCalibur series, with the likes of Tekken's Heihachi Mishima, The Legend of Zelda's Link, Yoda and Darth Vader from Star Wars, and Image Comics' Spawn making appearances in the past. It will be interesting to see if Bandai Namco will continue the series' trend of including guest characters in SoulCalibur VI.

What does this even mean? “SoulCalibur VI returns to its roots while bringing brand-new gameplay features to the fight.” When did it leave its roots and how are they returning to it? The two swords thing? That would be a rehash.

Honestly, I would have preferred SC2 properly done on the PS4 with the arcade's Conquest mode. It was fun having friends pick sides and the game "learn" your strategies so that when your friends fought your characters when you weren't there, they were fighting a character that played at least somewhat like you would since the arcade kept a "memory" of how you tended to fight and upped the skill level of your character from boring AI to an AI aided by your own custom move set. This mode was the "quarter eater" for SC2. About the only thing SC2 got right with regard to Conquest mode was at least putting its music track into the Weapon Master mode, though that made the lack of Conquest mode sting just that much more.

I know SC2 got an HD conversion for PS3, but it'd probably do well on the PS4/PS4 Pro (and XB1/XB1S/XB1X) today, especially for those of us that didn't pick the SC2HD up on the PSN back then before we moved onto the PS4 or next gen console of our choice.

Still, at least there's some fire left in the series after the abysmal 4 and 5 entries. I wasn't all that thrilled with 3 only because Namco still hadn't learned its lesson and failed to bring over Conquest mode, which would have made 3 the quintessential Soul Calibur to own. I wish SC3's soundtrack had been more memorable. SC2's soundtrack was so good I actually bought the import of the SC2 full OST despite having the hardback collector's guide with many of the game's tracks on CD as well (the full version had the Conquest mode music that the collector's guide CD did not and also some other tracks as well).

I'm not sure how I'm going to like the "dynamic camera" thing, which sounds more like a "quick time event" mechanic than something I'd really enjoy. I really hope it isn't QTE based because I've had enough of those in my RPGs to last a lifetime, especially after doing a plat of Final Fantasy XV. SC4 and 5 looked nice, but were all glitter, no substance. I want substance in my game.

Sophitia and Mitsurugi look very....young, is this a reboot? either way I'm VERY happy! and as a bonus its coming to PC as well! I really hope to see Seung-Mina again, the fact that she wasn't in 5 (amongst MANY other characters) turned me off from getting the game (place the game was overall garbage), and of course I hope to see Nightmare again as well. :D :D

Good news, I'm just waiting for the xbox team to put SCV in BC program. I couldn't play it too much because I purchased it right before I upgraded to the Xbox one.

@urbanman2004: nope... which is why switch is destined to be a secondary platform for all of time. most 3rd party games will not hit the switch by the looks of things.

Young Mitsurugi? Soul Edge mechanics? Looks like a soft reboot like MK9 was at present. I WANT to be hype but Namco has been screwing up on the series since SC3 and made SC4 and SCV mere shells of a SC game. Hoping for the best but wary for obvious reasons.

I really didn't think SC5 was that bad - I really enjoyed it. Love playing as Taki/Natsu

@DarkFrankhs: You didn't get Taki in Soul V, and the Super moves broke the game. Then add all the uninteresting new cast and you had a bad sequel, which IV was already a bad sequel so the series needs to go back to basics and make a great game.

I love SoulCalibur, but I've been disappointed in every release since III. V was just empty. Hoping they put some real effort into this one.

Great news. Finally a new entry to my favorite fighting game. Now I just hope it is in the original Era and not the time skip era of 5.

@lonesamurai1: Like Tekken 7 though. You may just be getting the worst game in the series for years.

Case you never played it Tekken Tag Tournament 2>>>>>>>>>>Tekken 7

@lonesamurai1: Pretty much every negative with T7 is nonsensical, so really being on P.C. platform isn't a benefit. You're just admitting you'd settle for a half baked game, so long as it's on your platform of preference.

If Tekken 7 was your first Tekken game I really feel bad for you. The developer didn't even want to make the game to begin with; TTT2 was intended to be the last game in the series. And that's why it had so much depth and passion in the project.

In the article you state SCV was released in 2016. I'm pretty sure it was 2012 lol.
