Space Force's Jimmy O. Yang Loves Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Too
He joins other celebrities in the Animal Crossing craze.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons hasn't gotten any less popular since launching in March with people dropping hundreds of hours into designing their islands. Celebrities, like Silicon Valley star Jimmy O. Yang, are obsessed with it too. Yang, who stars alongside Steve Carrell in Space Force on Netflix, went on CNET's I'm So Obsessed podcast and mentioned Nintendo's village simulator briefly.
"Everyone is obsessed with Animal Crossing right now," he said, going on to add that he named his island Guam after not being able to come up with something "more creative."
Animal Crossing is one of the fastest and best selling games on the Nintendo Switch. It sold just shy of 3.9 million copies in its home market of Japan, passing up previous record holder Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Celebrities, like Blink 182's Mark Hoppus, Brie Larson, Elijah Wood, and many others have spent time fishing and decorating in their own copies of the game.
Star Wars writer Gary Whitta took his love for the game even further and created Animal Talking, a talk show he hosts inside his Animal Crossing: New Horizon Home. Guests have included big names like T-Pain. Danny Trejo, who came on the show as a guest, is going to come back as a "correspondent" so he can show off his island to viewers.
Jimmy O. Yang is well known for his role as Jian-Yang on the HBO series Silicon Valley which just ended in December. Yang plays Dr. Chan Kaifang, a botanist working under John Gavin Malkovich's character, in Space Force.
Space Force launched on Netflix at the end of May to subpar critical reception. Show creator Greg Daniels plans to adapt the show in response to audience critiques, similar to how he approached the second seasons of Parks and Recreation and The Office. We don't know if or when Space Force will get a second season, but you can see Yang in his Amazon Prime comedy special, Good Deal, in the meantime.
