Space Jam 2 Is Doomed, Original Director Says

"Don't do it."

Following the recent news that Space Jam 2 is officially happening with NBA superstar LeBron James in the lead role, the director of the first movie has come out to say the project is "doomed."

No Caption Provided

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Joe Pytka offered this advice to filmmakers: "Don't do it. It's doomed. Michael Jordan was the biggest star on the planet."

Pytka claims Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry is a bigger name than James right now. He added that the movie likely won't be out for another two years at least, which gives Curry even more time to further extend his dominance over James.

He went on to talk about why the time was right for the original Space Jam back in 1996 and why it is unlikely that the sequel will succeed.

"When we did Space Jam, there was a perfect storm of players and ex-players available--Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing," he said. "They all had a persona that complemented the film. There are none around like that now."

The original Space Jam made more than $230 million during its box office run. The movie, which combined live-action and animation, saw Jordan play a very important game of basketball with Looney Tunes characters like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. The story for the sequel is being kept under wraps.

Rumors about James' involvement with Space Jam 2 emerged when his company SpringHill Entertainment reached a deal with Space Jam studio Warner Bros. last summer. Space Jam 2 won't be James' first acting gig, as he also played himself in Amy Schumer's 2015 comedy, Trainwreck.

Space Jam 2 will be directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious, Star Trek: Beyond). There is no word yet on the supporting cast or release date.

Non-american speaking that had the pleasure to see the first Space Jam as a kid and gotta say it's the first time hearing about Steph Curry but honestly I don't know Lebron James that well either. Don't think either of them are big enough stars to make a new Space Jam movie about, back in 96 it made sense to cast Jordan in the movie, I mean it'd been 20 years and we're still talking about him he was a worldwide superstar, I'm not sure that'll happen to any of these 2 guys.

Nevertheless who says Space Jam has to be about a basketball game? There are other sports with several legends currently playing

Steph Curry sounds like a disease or indian food dish. Never heard of him.

I don't watch sports but I know who Lebron James is.

As someone that lives in Seattle, and no longer having a basketball team, I don't follow basketball anymore (and before, it wasn't that much to begin with). I know of LeBron James, and I've heard of Steph Curry, and his recent MVP I think, though honestly, LeBron is still a much bigger name, at least I hear of him more, and see him in stuff non-basketball related. Not following it, I have no idea why Steph Curry is a bigger name; I just understand he's a good NBA player. Eh, I couldn't care less for a Space Jam movie, but I don't think there'd be much of an issue if LeBron was the star as Jordan was in the first is all I'm saying. I understand wanting the best player, but who cares.

@NTM23: as someone that does follow the sport Curry is quickly becoming the hottest and most popular player in the league. If he keeps up his performances he will likely be the biggest name in the league in two years.

What hurts Lebron is that he isn't universally loved. MJ was known all over the world and loved by most. Lebron has a lot of "haters" which could really hinder the movies success. People will see it as him wanting to be Jordan or better. Curry, at the moment, receives more love.

See... The biggest issue with your statement, Joe, is that I, a person who dislikes sports in most shapes and forms, has actually heard of Lebron.
This is literally the first I have ever heard of this Steph person.

@lordossiss: Then you must be under a rock because he is in every NBA commercial and the 2 time MVP of the league. He also has the 3 point record with around 400 points(3 pointers) in a season. He was also MVP of the Championship last year, so you are obviously a nerd that would have no interest in this movie to begin with, so you are NOT the target audience

@mi_hung_lo: The majority audience is going to be children
Because Looney Toons.

If you honestly think that this is a movie solely about Basketball... You're retarded.
To the normal people, like myself, who don't care about sports... Lebron James is a much more recognizable person than this other fucking dude that I will now refer to as "that one douche" just to piss you off.

Because here's the point you obviously missed: I do not like sports.

So before you jump right back on your shitty high horse about that one douche, just take the time to think about what you're doing and saying. Because, chances are, the only thing that the studio will care about is name recognition (so, in this instance, Lebron is more popular than that one douche.) Lebron James is a household name. That one douche isn't. So if a NERD like me recognizes the name, EVEN THOUGH I DON'T LIKE SPORTS, chances are that most people have heard of him. That one douche? Not so much.

Oh, no! A nerd?! Say it isn't so!!
Without nerds, you wouldn't be sitting where you are, playing the games you do. So shut the hell up.

While Curry would be a better choice I don't think they they should make it at all. I wouldn't mind if they made a different NBA/Basketball type movie but Space Jam doesn't need a sequel.

The only way I could see it was if it was years ago and Michael Jordan was the lead again. They could have made it when he was with the Wizards and was ready to retire. The Looney Tunes would need his help again, but he doesn't know if he still has it in him.

If they wanted Lebron on the cover, this movie is several years too late already. Either way, this movie was already doomed the moment it was announced to be in production.

Lebron is a terrible choice, since most people outside of Cleveland despise him. Everyone loved Jordan at the time.

Not really a basketball fan, so I can't really comment on that aspect of it. Maybe it came down to which of these guys was a better actor, because all basketball players are great actors, right? Sorry... Honestly I have no idea, but I don't think I care either. Even if whoever they pick gave the most wooden performance imaginable, I don't think it'd bother me. ...Much... The important thing though is to get it right on the Looney Tunes end. Those characters can make anyone look good, so that's what really matters, I think.

Steph Curry is ABSOLUTELY the biggest star in basketball right now. First ever unanimous MVP, NBA record for wins in a season, etc. Once the Warriors finish winning the title they'll be, IMO, the greatest team in NBA history. Yes, I include the 72 win Bulls there.

If you wanted to make a Space Jam 2 with Lebron you waited to long.

@BeefoTheBold: there will never be another Bulls team or MJ. Different era of basketball with different rules and more stars on different teams. Today the Warriors are the only team watchable and they are great too.

No, you need Lovable NBA players for a cartoon basketball comedy in this day and age. It should be a movie about 5 Shaqs saving the world.

I think the director forgets that if James beats Curry this year then not only does he lift the curse on Cleveland but does something that he didn't do last year. It isn't like James is a down star in the world of basketball.

@mari2kde: This dude is an idiot. Since when is Steph Curry arrogant? He's the poster boy for the NBA. There's not one thing he has done the showed arrogance. Not only is he the son of Dell Curry and was said not to be NBA material, but he is a family man that always puts his team first. The NBA loves him because he is squeaky clean. I can tell you're one of those morons that likes to HATE ON STUFF THAT'S POPULAR. Clearly you're a nerd because you have no idea who Steph Curry is. #CURRYGUY

I was expecting him to say something conniving and stupid because let's face it the original movie isn't actually that great of a film, but it has a nostalgia to it that we like.

However, what he says is actually logical and makes sense. They actually should listen to what he's saying here.

The problem isn't with the star.
The problem is that Hollywood thinks every popular movie back then needs a sequel or reboot.

Some do, absolutely, but not this and not Ghostbusters.

Well for most parts, he's got a point but let's ask ourselves this, does anyone even still cares about Looney Toons? Looney Toons still relevant today? Haven't seen any of its characters in years besides The Lonney Toon Show on CN and that show is gone due to poor rating so yeah, Space Jam 2 is DOOMED!

I won't lie, I'll only go see it if Barkley was back to do Space Jam 2.

@davillain-: Looney Tunes* =)

You make a valid point. Looney Tunes are pretty meaningless these days. I was never a huge fan of them in general even in the 80s and 90s when they had a renaissance.
