Why Space Marine 2's Massive Success Is "Dangerous" For Its Developer

Plus, Saber teases plans for story DLC or a full-on sequel.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 enjoyed a very successful launch earlier this month, and now one of the top bosses at the game's publisher has teased what's on tap for the future. This includes potential story DLC or even a full-on sequel, but plans are still being formulated.

Tim Willits, the CEO of Saber Interactive, decline to share hard sales data, but said the game's success can be "dangerous" for the studio.

Now Playing: 11 Essential Tips For Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2

"When you have a big hit and you have that internet kind of popularity, there's more passion and there's more responsibility for the quality that you do. And you look at yourself through a different lens. And sometimes that success lens can be a little dangerous because then you get so paranoid about making sure everything is great that you overstress about things," he told IGN. "But it's that success lens that really drives amazing games into the future. So I do believe that through the success lens that we have, we will just make far better products in the future."

Space Marine 2 had more than 2 million players at launch and became the most-played Warhammer game of all time on Steam. Willits has also said it's the fastest-selling game he's ever worked on, stretching back to the numerous Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake games he was part of at id Software over his two decades at the company.

Willits also revealed that the budget for Space Marine 2 was less than half of what Doom Eternal cost to make, though he did not divulge specific figures.

Space Marine 2's big success means its developers can now "dream bigger," Willits said, and this includes the possibility of story DLC for the game and Space Marine 3.

"Our game director Dmitry Grigorenko, he has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel," Willits said. "We're literally just catching our breath. This is two weeks out. We just need to get the dust to settle. But I can confidently say that we will not disappoint our Warhammer fans in the future. It's too big of a success! I know that's an obvious thing to say, but hopefully we'll be working on Space Marine content for a long time."

In GameSpot's Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 review, we called Saber's sequel "a more than worthy successor to the 2011 original," with "brutally gory action" that "brings the tabletop game to life in all its grimdark splendor."

Yeah, I get it. Victim of own success, more or less.

I wish publishers viewed these things as exceptions to the rule instead of the rule itself. Overwhelming success, I mean. Such is the flaw of publicly traded companies; good enough isn't good enough, profit alone isn't enough...you have to GROW GROW GROW!

Saber always did serviceable action games where the combat is the best part. It sounds more like they were handed an IP they could work well with. But the fact that game with no filler, no open world bloat, no absurd monetization schemes and no ties to other agenda than "for the Imperium/Emperor" is really good news to me.

You can talk about this game in past tense if you are done with it. But if you think that is bad, then enjoy your programmed task-like experience in any gacha or GaS game you think you are having fun with. You'll wake up from that hypnosis when you find an important job, one that pays at least.

This like helldivers 2 confuses me to no end how it did so well. This one did have a campaign unlike Helldivers. But it was worse by far than any campaign in a shooter I have ever played. Heck only got to like chapt 3 or 4 and went straight to mulitplayer. Which was almost as bad. LONG missions for slight upgrades of boring and uninteresting gear dead ending in about 1 day of gameplay.

Oh and thats not even including how bad the group finder was on console at least, It would not work at all till you restarted. Then you do one mission and it was bugged again.

A big win for Saber. And maybe a tough loss for Embracer, who owned the rights to Space Marine 2 and every other Saber game until they had to sell them (early in 2024) to get some more money. (and also sell the Borderlands studio Gearbox to Take 2) Embracer has had debt problems. So they perhaps did not have much of a choice. But if they could have held on a bit longer, they would have gotten the Space Marine 2 revenue now.

2 million players means at least 2 million sold copies, right.

2 million times 60 means the game made perhaps 120 million dollars. (But Steam gets a share of it too, of course) but if it goes on to sell ten million dollars, then we are talking about perhaps 600 million dollars in revenue, given the games keep selling at full price.. Big business..

I wonder what they spent on development and marketing of the title.

The future for Saber looks bright now. Space Marine 3 seems like a no brainer. I wonder if Saber could get listed on the stock exchange, with an initial public offering (i.p.o.). Maybe they do not even want to be on the stock market.

The sun shines brightly on their lands in Fort Lauderdale where their HQ is located.

Its a world beautifully done but i dunno, am not in the cheerleading band wagon, your campaing ai squadmates are dumb AF, the enemy AI unless you camp always at the far back they will prioritize you with everything, enjoy having barrage of barrage of missiles thrown at you by a terminator on the far end of the screen. Have 3 tyranid snipers only targeting you and your 2 AI squadmates having trouble clearing the termagants/hormagaunts.

And those issues are exponentially worse on operations, like when you need to press the runes with the chaos dragon spamming endless reinforcements. Its a mission clearly done with 3 real people playing not with AI. Or the one where you need to push the battery cart and you need to escort the cart and turn the rails. And forget it if you get two zoanthropes and you went as a guardian, unless you grabbed a melta bomb on the way over, even if you tag it they are too dumb to shoot the not shielded one.

But all in all it didnt flop so maybe titus will fight the necrons seeing the hints that were given.

SM2 was definitely fun. The single player was fun just mindlessly slaying tyranids. It was a bit clunky and there's damage from enemies that simply cannot be avoided, so an extremely aggressive playstyle is the way to go to regenerate your shields... It's funny how your squadmates always leave enemies in the 'Execute' state, they will only finish them off right before they are about to come out of the 'Execute' state, and sometimes they just don't finish them. The coop is pretty lame. 6 scripted missions and only 1 person can play a single class per game... I played 2 and was bored. I actually haven't played since the day it came out, when I beat it.

Like I said it was definitely fun, the lore is awesome, and the characters are cool... But not worth the price.

@bobbo888: I have not played it but it looked very brutal, kind of like Gears of War. But with a lot more monsters on the screen at once. Probably a cool action game.

Nonsense free, badass action characters, masculine men, action packed gameplay from start to finish, quality over quantity, SP, MP, Co-op included, no micros, polished on launch, no agendas, no cringe-quirk characters or dialogue, lore accurate… I could go on.

Games like this need to be developed forever. I love me some deep RPGs and tactical games, but I also love a good action packed, no-nonsense romp of a game. SM2 has flaws, of course, but this is how this kind of game is done right. I can only hope that Gears of War: E-Day follows suit.

@joecollin: No microtransactions or other annoying stuff, and just a well produced intense action game.

Is this why 99% of the video games that released since 2015 are trash? :DDD

I guess there's the danger you could just become 'The Space Marine Studio' and be expected to create ever more ambitious sequels to the same game. I can definitely see how you wouldn't want to get pigeonholed into just doing one thing for a decade or so.

Space Marine 2 is good. It's not great, but I appreciate that it isn't a live service game, can be played offline if needed, co-op missions have bots, and doesn't try to pad its campaign out. The core gameplay could use a little bit more going on, and I wish something like the PvE mode progression system was also in the campaign, but overall, SM2 is solid and worth the money if you're a 40k fan.

@mogan: They have a lot more games too on the way. Right now. I do not think they want to be a kind of one trick pony either becuase it is kind of dangerous. If one new big game in a franchise fails and all you have is the one big franchise, it could be a bit tough to get the trust back from players. It is perhaps better to have a few big franchises to build on. Not putting all eggs in one basket..
