Spawn Reboot Director Might "Walk Away" As Movie Stalls Over Script Issues

"Everyone has a slightly different version of it in their head."

28 Comments

It's nearly a year since Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner were announced as the stars of the Spawn movie reboot, and there have been very few updates about the project since. Now Todd McFarlane, who created the demonic anti-hero for a series of hugely popular comic books in the 1990s and is set to write and direct the movie, has spoken about the delays to the film.

In an interview with comicbook.com, McFarlane revealed that little has happened in the past year and script agreement between the film's financiers was proving to be an issue. "[We're in] about the same spot," he said. "The money's sitting on the sidelines ready to go. I just need to get everyone that wants to put in money to shake their heads to the same script.

Now Playing: The Comic Book History Of Spawn

"As you can imagine, everyone has a slightly different version of it in their head. You just go and trying to appease a handful of people while not giving in to what it is that I'm trying to do myself. Because if I have to change it too much, I'll just walk away from it all."

McFarlane's Spawn movie has been in the works for several years. In 2017 it was reported that the film would be produced by horror specialists Blumhouse Films, and that the budget would only be around $10 million, in order for McFarlane to make the film he wants. Foxx was announced in the lead role in May last year, while Renner joined as Detective "Twitch" Williams in July.

While McFarlane has not been specific about the current script issues, it doesn't exactly sound like he wants to make a crowd-pleasing comic book adventure. In an interview earlier this year, McFarlane explained that the movie would contain "no joy." He added: "There's gonna be no fun lines in it, and it's just gonna be this dark, ugly two hours' worth of movie, which is essentially what a lot of supernatural/horror movies are anyway."

The Spawn comic book was first published in 1992 and was massively popular, with the first issue selling 1.7 million copies. However, the 1997 film adaptation received a negative critical reception and underperformed commercially.

Translation: MacFarlane wants to make a Spawn movie, and the suits bankrolling the project want an MCU film because they don't know shit about what they are talking about.

I’m really looking forward to this movie, I hope it gets made the right way. I’m sure the investors want another Marvel like superhero movie but, Spawn was never that kind of character.

his vision sounds good. but more importantly can we get the same kind of collaborations for the OST again please? to this day it's still a very unique soundtrack and whoever produced it definitely had his/her own vision. Incubus with DJ Greyboy, Prodigy with Tom Morello, Korn with Dust Brothers, Marilyn Manson with Sneaker Pimps,...

i mean... all the ideas you get into your head...

Spiritbox with DJ Snake anyone?

what about Deftones with Chemical Bros?

yeah i can definitely see that being amazing.

@RaveNRolla: if you liked the Colabs on the Spawn Soundtrack you should check out the “Judgement Night” Soundtrack. They had Colabs like De La Soul and Teenage Fanclub, Cypress hill And Pearl Jam, Del And Dinosaur Jr, etc. check it out here. https://open.spotify.com/album/1qwrbuNLtDcuj2myhuESlh?si=lX8bF42ZTVC9nzheaa14zA

it will earn at least $200m from the name alone on a $10m budget. let the man make his movie for christ sakes! we need more diversity in the superhero genre... it has gotten so homogeneous that i cannot tell the difference between them anymore. might as well call the new spawn movie a horror flick instead and that will keep expectations in check.

@Xristophoros: Aren't we optimistic. I highly doubt it will get anywhere near that much, but going the horror movie route is actually a good move. They always seem to earn at least $40 million. Horror fans are a reliable bunch. Spawn seems like a franchise that demands a higher budget though.

Maybe they can re-release that fantastic HBO animated Spawn series to drum up some interest in a darker rendition of Spawn. That series was so good, and having re-watched it recently, still holds up remarkably well.

Probably fighting the PC police that want Spawn to be a watered down social justice piece. If that's the case, then he should walk away.

@asultana121x: I'm not sure what you mean by this comment. Spawn, though a very dark anti-hero, was entirely a force for social justice. A lot of early source material depicts Spawn living alongside homeless people in an alley, where he reluctantly becomes their protector. I think that's an excellent element of the story to portray with a Spawn reboot. He was a damned soul, a killer and a soldier of hell, but he ended up protecting the forgotten and powerless, people at the bottom most rung of the economic ladder. It would be disappointing if this didn't make it into the story.

@Kyrylo: I read the comics only sporadically - I own the HBO Spawn animated series, which was excellent and still holds up very well today. That was largely what I was basing my description on. It's possible the HBO series took liberties with the source material, but if they followed it as a template I think it would make for an excellent "darker Spawn" film.

@izraal: I highly doubt the original creator of the character, for comics, is very interested in someone else's take.

@Barighm:

@Kyrylo

I looked it up, it seems it the HBO show was faithful to McFarland with the arc about the alley and the homeless.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Spawn_characters

"Bobby - Bobby is a homeless man who was Al's best friend in the first 70 issues..."

Basically saying if it's faithful to the comics, Spawn absolutely represents social justice. He's homeless and downtrodden himself.

How in the hell does Blumhouse expect that this movie would get made for 10 mil?

With Jamie Foxx. Jeremy Renner and probably an sss-ton of post production work, (CG), there's just no way.

@aross2004: Those two are savvy enough to take points instead of upfront pay on pet projects. Neither of them are hurting for money, and both clearly enjoy the genre.

Aka, the "learn from Keanu" method.

Same goes for McFarlane, and the $10M clearly doesn't include mktg budget.

The only film I'll spend my dollars on is McFarlane's film, in all its dark glory. Like Bioshock, I'd rather have nothing than some Hollywood fluff version.

@Pyrosa: Agreed. OG authors should have total control of the adaptations. Who knows their work better than them? That's why I love it when someone comes tell the author what his or her work is REALLY about.
