Spec Ops: The Line Is No Trip to the Beach

Sandstorms, helicopter crashes, falling skyscrapers, and Nolan North! These are just some of the things you can expect to find in Spec Ops: The Line.

Sand is going to get everywhere when Spec Ops: The Line hits the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC later this month. 2K's new third-person shooter takes place in Dubai, where you play the role of Captain Martin Walker, voiced by none other than Nolan North. We were sent copies of the game to check out ahead of the launch, so we got suited up and captured some footage.

Spec Ops: The Line's introduction is pretty explosive, as you're thrown straight into a helicopter dogfight.

This is the first of many ambushes that Walker and his team find themselves in during the course of the game.

The team frequently finds itself fighting against large numbers of enemies. The clip below is an example of the action sequences that take place in the single-player campaign.

Walker is one tough bastard--falling from skyscrapers doesn't seem to pose too much of a problem. After falling, Walker then has to fend off attackers on his own, while his team race to save him.

Spec Ops: The Line will be released June 29 in the UK and June 26 in the US for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. If you're eager to see more of the game, check out our episode of Now Playing where Guy and Mark blast their way through an abandoned building.

Now that I played the demo, I can say this isn't a very good game. Regarding gameplay, there are lots of games with a better one, like Max Payne 3, Ghost Recon Future Soldier. The graphics aren't all that bad, but still are very inferior to some games. O thing that bothered me is the fact that you can't drop to a below floor unless the game tells you to press the corresponding button. You can be standing at the edge of a cliff, your objective is down below, but you can't jump down unless you go to the place of the edge the that game wants you to go, only then the command to jump down will become available. Oh, and if you scare easily, this game's not for you. During it's trailer, displayed at the end, there are some gruesome scenes featuring tortured and executed soldiers

I'm not very sure about this game. I like games with good storylines, but a good gameplay is also important. Unfortunately, this one seems to lack a good gameplay. Has anyone noticed that the guy shot THROUGH the cover in the 1:09 minute of the third video?

@GabrielAlmeida7 You can shoot through wood in the game, and he didn't shoot through the cover, most bullets bounced off the stair rail and those than didn't hit it flew right to the enemies he was aiming at. I think you should give this game a chance, I thought the demo was great. Great storyline, the gameplay was smooth except for that dropping down stuff which quite honestly isn't that big of a deal.

@bjg18605 Now I see what you mean by saying he didn't shoot through cover. Thank you. After writing that, I played the demo, and I can say you're right. I liked the atmosphere and the storyline, the gameplay is also good, although I wished the guy had more freedom of movement. Being only able to do some actions when prompted by the game sucks (like when you have to drop to a floor below, you can only do so when you're in the place the game wants you to be).

@GabrielAlmeida7 @bjg18605 Yeah, I definitely agree about the need for more freedom of movement haha. It can be a pain in the ass sometimes. Can't always have a perfect game though, it's been a while since one was made.

So, my question is. What is this game doing to stand out or lead the way for other shooters to follow. I don't see where I should pay $60.00 for something I have already seen before... accept in HD I guess.

I loved the demo mostly because i was paying more attention to the storyline.. and the suspense it built up was awesome.

nothing makes a game better than having an awesome storyline.. hope it gets better and beyond expectations and doesnt fail

Demo is ok I suppose but does nothing at all different, I reckon it won't score to high though :( about a 6.5 or 7 if it's lucky.

@IamNick2k11 I think you might be right, but I haven't played the demo just yet. Based on gameplay footage that I have seen, I don't think it is all that great. The story might save the score somewhat, but I don't think it will get any higher than an 8 at best. My first indication that a shooter (be it 1st or 3rd person) is not going to be all that good is the visible vapor trails left by the bullets that seem to go way slower than an actual bullet would. I hate it when you have to steer your vapor trails and lead your target into them. That is a game breaker for me, and that is what it looks like when I see gameplay footage.

@kratos-lll I think it will depend on "who" the enemy is, if it is an Arab terrorist group then you will prob see mostly terrorists, just like in Yakuza you fight pretty much all Japanese people yet their are people of other nationalities living in Japan as well, however to be Yakuza you have to be japanese so it made sense that you were fighting mostly japanese.

I played the demo for this game (on PC), and the graphics and animations are great. The hints of story make it seem like it could be interesting. But unfortunately it basically plays like a lot of other third person cover shooters. The idea that you can command your allies to focus fire etc., just didn't go far enough for me, and didn't always work. Some of the AI was a bit clunky.

The combat just didn't feel 'tactical' enough, and I was really itching for some greater depth to the range of commands you could give your team. Think 'Republic Commando' to have an idea of the squad control I would have liked to see in this game. And I shouted at the screen when you go for a silent takedown - then one of the guys shouts at the top of his lungs and alerts the entire building to your presence. Totally broke the immersion there.

I'm just not sure the gorgeous environments and story can overcome the gameplay mechanics for me.

what I liked in the demo is that you are not the only one getting shot at and that your AI team mates can actually kill the enemy by themselves

the demo was soooo linear and the gameplay was stiff. it was kinda neat to see a new take on the shooter genre, but it really was pretty bad overall

@Bhemont Really?! That's your criteria for judging this as a good game? No wonder there's so much bland $hit sitting on people's shelves. No need for creative and innovative gameplay - we have Nolan North. Hurrah!
