"Specially Adapted" Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty PlayStation Vita Arrives Today

"We've made the game look a little grittier--gone is the bloom and glow..."

Having already launched for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PC, the latest Oddworld game, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, continues to expand with a release for PlayStation Vita. Oddworld Inhabitants has announced that the game--a remake of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee--is launching on Sony's portable platform today, January 19. The game does not appear to be available just yet, though it should come soon.

"PS Vita is a wonderful machine, and for Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty it grants us--for the first time with this particular game--the ability to build an experience designed to be enjoyed on the bus, or laid back on the sofa, or for those sneaky 10-minute distractions under the desk while your boss calls this week's Important Meeting," Oddworld executive producer Bennie Terry said in a PlayStation Blog post.

Terry went on to say New 'n' Tasty's PS Vita edition is "very much" the same as the previously released versions. But at the same time, it's a "refined, specially adapted version of the game that plays to the strengths of the mobile format," Terry explained.

"We've also worked tirelessly to ensure that the visual experience on PS Vita matches up as closely as it can with the other versions," Terry added. "We've made the game look a little grittier--gone is the bloom and glow leaving an aesthetic that closer resembles the 1997 classic--while tweaking every single area in the game to suit the platform."

New 'n' Tasty on PS Vita also includes Trophies. To unlock the Platinum, you'll have to save every Mudokon in under three hours.

GameSpot's New 'n' Tasty review scored the downloadable game an 8/10.

"Despite the ads, and occasional frustrations from the fiddly analogue movement, this is a remake that feels as though it was crafted with love and respect," GameSpot review Daniel Hindes said in 2014. "With clever puzzles near identical to the original game, and beautiful environments brought to life with new visuals and a dynamic camera, New 'n' Tasty satiated me, even though I'm an Oddworld veteran and know each solution and secret area like the back of my (scarred) hand."

A Wii U version of New 'n' Tasty is also in development, though a release date has not been announced.

I wish the jumping was better in this game. It's just so weak for my tolerance. The game felt so much flatter by it. I "wanted" to like this game., but I don't know. Even though I dislike a bunch of negative comments, that' just how I felt about this one.

@Silverline62: I understand PS TV is the redheaded step-child of the PS product family. But this game was made for controllers. All they have to do is retain the option for no touch controls and mark the "compatible with PS TV" option when they submit the game.

For games that work well with controllers, there's no good reason not to just open it up to PS TV users. PS TV is a lot better than what it's given credit for and it only falls short because of laziness from Sony and Vita developers.

Hoping for a Abe's Exodus remake next, New n' Tasty was great but for this kind of playformer they need to make the controls a bit more smoother

I prefer the originals. As much as I appreciate the effort that was put into updating it, the lolloping animations make the imprecise platforming even more awkward than the old versions and the dynamic camera didn't help. I hope the Abe's Exoddus remake features a classic mode like Grim Fandango.
