Spelunky coming to PC on August 8

PC version of last year's XBLA hit to be released via Steam and GOG.com.

Randomly generated platformer Spelunky will be released for PC on August 8, the game's official website has confirmed.

Spelunky on PC will be available on both Steam and GOG.com. "Spelunky is returning to PC on August 8th, 2013!", wrote developer Mossmouth. "The walls are shifting…"

The new PC version is based on last year's remastered Xbox Live Arcade port of Spelunky, which itself was a souped up version of the game's 2009 freeware release on PC.

GameSpot awarded the Xbox Live Arcade version of Spelunky an 8.5 in its review last year. "When you finally conquer something that has been hounding you for hours, you feel like the best darn explorer on the planet, and that feeling overshadows all the hardships you overcame down the troubled path you traveled."

Alongside the upcoming PC version, Spelunky will also be released on the PlayStation 3 and Vita in summer 2013.

Awesome, addictive game but for me WAY too hard. Hate to admit but I could never get out of the caves. For serious gamers only.

I just really like the better graphics. They look much more clean and crisp if only all other retro games could do higher quality 16 bit art

Awesome news! :) Played the free game a whole lot on the PC, but sadly couldn't play the remastered version because I didn't have an Xbox. What would be even cooler is if this game got mod support :D

The shopkeepers be damned! I've been waiting for ages. Need this version on PC and Vita ASAP! Also, to the fans of old PC version, I say this:

Prepare for the Hell quest!

@vildanturic If you bother to read the article you can see that this is the remastered version that was on xbox live.

Is this game actually any good?

I've never tried it but if it is good, I might just get it myself.

@punksterdaddy It's bloody hard, get ready for a super challenge. Good game though, doesn't feel unfair which I often thought about Dark Souls. It will cost next to nothing so I say at least try it out.

@jeffrobin @hobotech64

Thanks for the information folks.

I bought Dark Souls about two months ago and I have to say... I don't get it!

Why is is so ridiculously hard, it's relentless?

I can already feel all of the self proclaimed "Hardcore Gamers," getting upset at this comment and therefore will immediately call my mother a sl@g etc.

I've tried to play the game while following the advice of others, by thinking as death as being a core mechanic of the game and not death!

It just frustrates me no end! Grrrrrrr I'm getting tensed up just typing this and believe me, I am jabbing these letters so bloomin' hard at the thought of it!

Well anyway, since you seem to agree that Dark souls feels unfair, perhaps you could offer me some advice on the game?

Thanks for your help and I understand if you don't wish to discuss it further. lol

"Grrrrrrrrrrr that bloody game!!!"

@jeffrobin

Thanks Jeff, that was very kind of you to explain all that.

I have to say though, I did go in with that attitude towards it but I too feel that is a lot of grinding for little pay off.

I normally like games that have some form of difficulty or has puzzles to be figured out, either by reading or finding clues.

However, this is not that sort of game. It's relentless and basically just not worth it in my opinion.

I may decide to pick it up again later but I seriously doubt it, your comment has helped me nail that coffin firmly closed.

I'm glad someone else has said this, since I keep hearing from people on here from time to time that Dark Souls is for "Hardcore Gamers Only!" Which is ironic because I was considered to be that by my friends... despite my hatred for this term.

So anyway, Spelunky... I was interested in that and may still get it tomorrow? It is pay day after all and even though it is hard...

It can't be Dark Souls hard... surely!

@punksterdaddy@jeffrobin@hobotech64Ok here's how to beat Dark Souls. First off have you ever played Rock Band or Guitar hero because if you have you are half way there. DS is a basically a rhythm game, once you get that mind set things get simpler. Every enemy has a certain rhythm and once you memorize where he is and what rhythm he has (as in timing your attacks between his) you can eventually beat him. This is the same for normal enemies and bosses.

The second thing is early on try and wear the lightest or lest amount of armor possible, this will give you a speed advantage straight away and that's crucial.

Next, cheat like you have never cheated before. Go onto the web sites and find where the super duper stuff is early because you will need it.

Keep your expectations low, DS has a terrible UI system (for inventory, powers etc.) if you can't handle that you will get frustrated.

And lastly have the patience of a saint, masochistic tendencies, a superiority complex and the imagination of a warthog because you will be spending a LOT of time repeating things until you have memorized everything.

That's it in a nutshell. I personally think it's not worth it but I'm a high energy type of guy so I just don't like all that figuring out for (to me) so little gain.

As for Spelunky it is similar in difficulty but more fair in my opinion. Trick is never stop concentrating as I often get killed by things I don't see (dart throwing idols) and try to get to the entrance as quickly as possible getting as much loot and the princess as you can as she gives you an extra life and I think the loot moves you quicker through the worlds (not sure about that) But if in doubt just get the princess as lives are incredibly important.

Anyway, have fun!

But...but...Spelunky is already on PC. Oh well, as long as it's better than the Freeware version, then I guess that's cool.
