Spider-Man Director's Version of Warcraft Had a "Fundamental" Problem, Jones Says

"The fact that it was human heroes against Orc villains. To me, that was fundamental misstep."

Speaking this week at a PAX East panel, Warcraft director Duncan Jones talked about taking over directorial duties for the project after Spider-Man director Sam Raimi dropped out. He specifically mentioned that Raimi's version of Warcraft had a "fundamental" problem, which was that it was going to be a movie that depicted the human characters as completely good and the Orcs as inherently evil. This depiction of the Warcraft universe was flawed, Jones said, adding that Blizzard, too, thought this was the wrong direction.

"When I got involved, [Blizzard] had already been through the hardships of not getting the film made," Jones said. "And there was kind of a pause, a stalled process as they worked out how they were going to move forward. I had been tracking [the Warcraft movie], purely as a fan, knowing that Sam Raimi was involved. I wanted to see the movie. I heard that he had decided to part ways and go do Oz."

Raimi officially left Warcraft in July 2012 to instead make Oz: The Great and Powerful. At this time, having just finished Source Code, Jones obtained a copy of Raimi's Warcraft script, ultimately discovering what he considered to be a major problem.

"I really wanted to know what the film was going to be like," he said. "So I managed to get a sneaky look at the script and I was like 'Ohh, it's good, but there's something really wrong with it.' And it was the fact that it was human heroes against Orc villains. To me, that was fundamental misstep."

Jones went on to say that he understands why Blizzard wasn't thrilled with Raimi's vision for the movie and ultimately decided to go a different direction.

When Jones pitched his version of Warcraft to Blizzard, the developer was thrilled, he said, as his idea was "totally synchronous" with what creative people like Chris Metzen wanted from it.

"This was a movie that shows the heroes on all sides. As much as you can, make it half human, half orc as far as what we portray," Jones said.

Also during his panel this week, Jones said Warcraft will "veer off" the core Warcraft lore in some sections. But when it does, it will be for the purpose of making the movie better overall, he and actor Robert Kazinsky said. The goal is to avoid another Super Mario Bros. movie, Kazinsky said.

Finally, Jones also shared a new Warcraft poster featuring the character Draka. Warcraft opens on June 10.

They should of gone with Raimi. Ever seen Army of Darkness? Classic medieval supernatural gorefest. Perfect for this movie. Unlike foreigners who only care about CGI, Americans need a good story and thats exactly what this movie doesnt have. Its too convoluted. No focus. This movie will leave about $150m on the table by not appealing to Americans. I seriously doubt they'll use Duncan for a sequel of there is any.

Maybe he should wait for his movie to hit theaters and then fail miserably before he starts spouting crap like he knows what he's talking about.

Somehow, I was thinking they were disappointed at the lack of dubstep.

After playing World of Warcraft for 10 years, I guess I never really wanted to admit to myself that the Warcraft universe really is mostly about racism and genocide. I was excited for this movie four years ago when they announced it, but now... eh I'll wait for it to be free on Netflix or Amazon Prime. This movie wasn't necessary, and I don't think anyone is excited for it.

I saw Huntsman last night (was a snorefest) and before it started, there was an ad for the Warcraft movie. I heard people in the theater asking what it was, and someone said "video game". That made me sad, because Orcs vs humans invented the RTS genre, and World of Warcraft was and maybe still is the largest-sub MMO on the planet. It's not just "a" video game. I guess not everyone can be a gamer like us. xD

The Orcs willingly drank demon blood then invaded another planet committing genocide.

Yeah, I can see why portraying them as evil was the wrong direction for the film.

@Gamerguymass: Not all of the orcs wished to go along with this plan. If you know anything about the lore then this point should be obvious. So yes; portraying them (all) as evil would be the wrong direction for the firlm.

I hope the fans are pleased with whatever movie they get, because the rest of the movie-going public probably isn't going to give a care. It's at least five years too late for a film like this to have crossover appeal.

@zerohournow: If you're talking about Garona, she's half orc half draenei, that is supposed to resemble a half orc half human.

@zerohournow: Garona is a legend among the Warcraft universe. She is one of the greatest assassins in the history of Warcraft. She has been around LONG before this movie was even thought of. Hell I remember getting her ring as a drop in Karazhan in BC(that was in 2006). To not have her in the movie would be omitting a huge part of history. Throw "reason" in quotes all you like, she belongs in this movie.

@zerohournow: Yes, I get it.... When someone proves you wrong you resort to elementary school name calling. I'll say this one more time in language even a child can understand. Garona is a key part of the story. You wouldn't have removed Hermione from the Harry Potter movies just because Emma Watson is hot, would you?

@zerohournow: Yeah, that fem orc looks totally bizarre. So far a lot of what I've seen of the movie looks downright goofy. I know that's fine for the universe, but it gets weird when you start mixing average looking humans with grotesquely cartoony everything else.

I have to agree, that would be a really bad move for a Warcraft movie. So far this movie looks good and I am very excited for it. What worries me is them veering to much off from the story. I just hope the major plot points are in place, it will be a much more interesting movie then.

Movie looks horrible. Its not a cartoon, its not a movie. CGI looks fake, but would have worked as a straight up animation, but you mix the real people in there and it looks whacked.

@hyksiu: If i recalled it right, the orcs in LOTR is elves gone bad through the influence of Sauron.
But even then Orcs have their own civilization in Mordor and more fertile land in Mordor. They happen to serve a darklord who guide them to do bad things.

Why bother putting any live action people into this film? They're surrounded by cartoon characters and stand out really awkwardly, most of all in that armor. All the props look like they're made out of plastic and the only makeup done in the whole movie seems to be the "hottie orc" Garona, and it looks like something out of a Syfy B film. Lower expectations for this film may actually make it more satisfying to watch.

That's smart. That's very much what Blizzard has always implied with the games. Actually in World of Warcraft the humans always seemed the most evil being how racist they were inherently, but then Blizzard made the orcs more racist and so it was equal opportunity racism from everybody.
