Spider-Man Rejoins The MCU: Sony And Marvel Strike Deal For New Movie

We're in the third act of a really weird rom-com with Sony and Marvel Studios.

After weeks of dramatics between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment, the two have finally come to an agreement between Spider-Man and the character's inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For the new deal, the two will joint-produce a standalone Spider-Man movie, and the character will appear in another MCU movie.

The untitled third film in the new Spider-Man franchise is now scheduled for release on July 16, 2021, according to Variety, and as part of the new working arrangement between the two studios, Spider-Man is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, there is no news as of this writing to which movie he'll appear in.

"I am thrilled that Spidey's journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it," Marvel Studios President Feige explained. "Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold."

Sony has already commented on this news, publishing a simple tweet of a spider.

Actor Tom Holland didn't write anything or record a video expressing how excited he was. Instead, he posted a video on Instagram from The Wolf of Wall Street. It's very fitting.

A post shared by Tom Holland (@tomholland2013) on

The past month for the Sony/Marvel relationship over the rights to Spider-Man has been a rollercoaster ride to say the least. It was first reported that Sony and Marvel couldn't come to an agreement on the movie rights--Sony currently owns the rights to the Spider-Man character. There was a lot of bizarre back-and-forth between the two studios, and it seemed like Spider-Man was out of the MCU for good, until today. Fans of Marvel's films will surely be exceptionally excited about this news.

Amid all of this, Holland discussed early plans for his next Spider-Man movie, saying it would be "very different." Whether that will still be the case is unknown.

As for Sony, they're still working on Marvel movies that take place outside of the MCU. A Spider-Verse sequel is still happening, there's a Venom sequel on the way, a Morbius movie starring Jared Leto is coming, and most recently, a Madame Web movie is in the works.

Remember original movies? Like how movies like Austin Powers, Rush Hour, Contact, Men in Black, etc etc etc etc were all released within 3 years?

I am glad Sony and Disney worked out a deal. I enjoyed Tom Holland as Spiderman and am excited to see where Spiderman shows up next. Maybe Madam Web movie? Or Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness.

Great that's what we need: another cookie-cutter superhero movie. Because there's been a huge shortage of these recently.

Let me guess, Spiderman will initially be overcome by his enemies and have self doubt, then something will inspire him and he'll beat the bad guy at the end of the movie with a spectacular but over the top action sequence.

I do not trust Sony with the eventual handling of Marvel Zombies and Spidey is an integral part of that story. Just let marvel buy his rights jeez.

I’m very disappointed to hear this. I was pleased at the separation of Spider-Man from the MCU. It allowed them to develop the Spider Man centric characters like Madam Web, Morbius, Black Cat and Venom, creating their own self contained New York based “Spider Man Cinematic Universe,” through Sony, and would have encouraged the MCU to dip further into its vast catalog of characters that have yet to see a film adaptation of any kind.

This just suggests a return to a tired status quo, with the same already over saturated characters appearing as often as possible, with little eye to expanding the focus to more obscure but interesting characters, like Moon Knight or Sentry.

@izraal: Venom was bad. If that’s any indication of where Sony would take the live-action Spider-Man franchise, no thanks.

@Baconstrip78:

Venom's quality may be in question, but firstly, it was profitable, which is ultimately the barometer for success with any Hollywood film. Second, while it was flawed, it was still a more enjoyable film than many MCU entries. People often forget the lackluster MCU films because there are just so many at this point, but there's few fans who wouldn't prefer to re-watch Venom over, say, the first two Thor movies.

Again, bigger than the question of quality is that of creative suffocation. Having an overexposed character like Spider-Man in the MCU just encourages them to over saturate films with big name characters - it's bad for MCU fans, and bad for Spider-Man fans, as there's less impetus to create an expanded Spider-Man centered cinematic universe.

Keeping Spider-Man separate from the MCU, keeping all "X" lines separate from the MCU, benefits both the Spider-Man and X-men concepts, as well as the core MCU itself. It allows all of the above to breathe, to focus on their own storytelling, instead of a need for constant "trailers" for the next movie included in the one you're watching now, cameos stealing the focus from the story at hand, and storytelling without stakes.

Much love for the current Spideryguy. Tom is a great Peter Parker and their Spooderfriens is the best one yet...

That having been said, while I understand the knee jerk appeal of calling for Sproderboy to appear in the next Venom film, they friggin' queued up "VENOM VS CARNAAAAGE!!!!" aaaaand you all want to throw that amazing premise away for half a movie of Peter Parker derping around San Francisco and ultimately pushing Venom out of the spotlight entirely?

Sometimes I'm genuinely thrilled when film companies ignore the fans >.>

@Poodger: why? i want to see carnage on screen and more importantly i want spider-man to be in the film with his famous rivals and villains

I don't care much for Iron Boy Jr.

But either way ill get what i want because Venom made 800+ million and confirmed sequel. so what I want I get that's how my life usually works

@alastor529: Your last sentence there? Yikes. Makes you come across as a minor still. If so, you best buckle up. That isn't how life works in the real world.

Back to the point though, Venom was mediocre at best. And letting the heroes play in a larger shared sandbox is just better all around. Sony making all these bizarre spinoffs almost cheapens the whole thing though.

@Poodger: he had the black suit on he was supposed to be unlikable because of it, it's feeding of his worst emotions. so he was acting emo throughout. So i understood what the director wanted to do and the same thign happened in the comics so it had source to it.

there is no reason given for why this new MJ is so unlikable or why Peter would be attracted to her at all.
they should've just had Vulture's daughter be Peter's love interest because she was actually likeable. and would've set up interesting plot threads in later movies.

also just to be clear i'm okay with Tom Holland as Spider-man. I just hate his solo movies.

@alastor529: His character being unbearable for 90% of the movie, REGARDLESS of whether or not it was on purpose, is still bad.

I don't have a problem with this version of MJ. She is different from the original, but as an isolated character, I don't have any problems with her.

I have enjoyed both Homecoming and Far from Home. They were entertaining. Clearly, most people agree. Both movies did tremendously well, were well received by critics and fans alike, and the outrage over the Sony/Disney debacle speaks for itself. People want this Spiderman to continue.

@Poodger: well everyone's character in the MCU spider-man movies was unbearable for 2 movies straight for me.
Raimi's trilogy actually had memorable castings, performances, and most importantly LINES. SO many memorable scnes an moments in the Raimi trilogy because Sam Raimi is a great director that know how to make memorable scens and lines. not his fault he had studio interference for the third one but the 2nd movie is by far the best Spiderman movie in every way

I can't even remember a single scene in Homecoming except the scene in the car with peter and Michael Keaton. and the only thing I remember liking in far from home was when they showed
JK Simmons return as JJ. and that was the scene that got the biggest ovation in my theater so people obviously still responding to the Raimi trilogy quite well despite you not liking it.

Look we aren't going to agree because yo will just respond by saying "na uh I like this better, so its better"
so ill just end it here, but I gottta pat my own back because hey at least I can explain why I like Raimi's trilogy and not the MCU version while you cannot. SO I gotta hand it to myself there.you gotta have more substance in your arguments next time. and get better taste in movies if you think they are good

@alastor529: Good lord. You write and form arguments like one of my Jr. High students. It is very clear to me that you are not yet an adult. Spelling/grammar aside, your self gratification and child-like comments... "I gotta hand it to myself" "i gottta pat my own back" and "I always get what I want"... big yikes dude. Clearly you aren't getting quite what you want here though. The MCU Spiderman movies are WIDELY enjoyed, they will continue being made, and Raimi is not coming back to make another Spiderman movie. Speaking of Raimi, you praise him as an incredible director, but I am pretty sure you probably couldn't tell me any of his other works without looking it up. To save you the trouble, he doesn't have a particularly jaw dropping resume.

Also, "na uh I like this better, so its better" is almost EXACTLY what you are doing! Your arguments themselves had zero substance in them until your last post. I snorted my drink while reading that, it was a real knee-slapper. Also, taste is subjective my dude, there is no such thing as having "good" or "bad" taste. It is ALL opinion, and opinions cannot, by definition, be right or wrong.

Anyway, Spiderman 2 was a solid movie. The rest of that trilogy was memed to hell and back, because it was pretty cringe-worthy. Tobey was not a very good Peter Parker overall, but did decent with the Spidey-mask on. Tom Holland delivers a believable portrayal of Parker as a highschooler, and as good a performance as Spiderman in costume. I am interested to see if he can pull off a matured adult Parker in the future. He nails the nerdy highschool Spiderman so well though.

Both Villains have been done very well in the new movies, especially Mysterio in the newest one. That movie had arguably some of my favorite villain-fight scenes, rivaling some of the well done Doc Ock scenes. The action sequences are well done overall in both of the new films, they are exciting to watch. The Spidey costume looks great too. Ultimately, the biggest draw for MCU Spiderman is quite literally getting to have him interact with the MCU. Seeing Spiderman on screen with all the other heroes, and to live in their world, is a real treat. And it has been handled pretty well.

@Poodger: You mean you didn’t like emo-Spider-Man? Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 proved to me that Sony can’t be trusted to create their own universe anymore than WB can. They can’t get past a couple movies before massively dropping the ball.

It’s the same problem DCEU has. The studio pushes the director to include too many characters before he has a chance to develop them properly.
