Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was one the most acclaimed superhero adventures of recent years, and a sequel to the animated hit is on the way. Last month it was reported that the film's release date has been pushed back to October 2022, but there's good news for fans--the movie has now started production.

The start of work on the Spider-Verse sequel was revealed by lead animator Nick Kondo. Kondo posted a message on Twitter stating that June 8 was his first day on the job, and accompanied the message with a short video featuring the movie's logo. Check it out below:

Into the Spider-Verse sequel will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, who has worked on a variety of animated TV shows over the years, including Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and G.I. Joe: Resolute. It hits theaters on October 7, 2022, having been pushed back from April that year.

While we don't know many details about the movie, producer Amy Pascal previously revealed that the movie will focus on the relationship between Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey. Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld are set to voice those characters once more.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released in December 2018, and made more than $375 million at the worldwide box office. It also found success at last year's Academy Awards, where it won the Oscar for Best Animated Film. An extended version was released on home entertainment platforms--check out GameSpot's guide to the many changes in this cut.
