Splatoon's Weirdly Limited Demo Returns for a Few Hours

Make your plans now.

Those who haven't yet picked up Splatoon have another chance to sample it later this month, albeit only for a very limited period of time.

As with past Testfire demos, this one has an extremely narrow window during which you can play: It'll be available from August 25-28 from 3-5 PM PT each day. Nintendo's insistence on restricting the demo is odd given the game is now well over a year old. But the company has a history of doing things differently with demos, as evidenced by the limited number of times many 3DS demos can be played.

No Caption Provided

To participate in the demo, you'll first need to download it from the Wii U eShop. This is an online-only demo, so you'll need to have an internet connection during the allotted times. When it's live, you'll be able to take part in Turf War multiplayer matches on two maps, Saltspray Rig and Walleye Warehouse. Four weapons will be available: the Splattershot, Splattershot Jr., Splat Roller, and Splat Charger.

You can prepare for the demo by checking out some tip videos Nintendo released earlier this year. You could also ask a friend--more than 4 million copies of the game have been sold, so you might very well know someone who's played it.

Splatoon was updated a number of times following launch, with the final weapon and map arriving earlier this year. Since then, Nintendo has pledged further support for the shooter, which was recently honored with a Chinese knockoff.

These Nintendo demos are simply stupid, same as the stupid 3DS Demos (you just has only a certain number of times to use them, hell as if anyone will use it more than once!)

I was once interested on Splatoon so tried to get into the demo. That time I was only able to play for 40 minutes (because, you know, servers). And half of that time was invested in the menus trying to find a way to disable the damn gyroscope.

That made me lost any interest on the game I may have.

I don't believe in 4 million copies. Horrible game. And their demos - it's as if they were giving away something priceless.

@Ripper_TV: I don't believe that you have even played it. Just because you don't like the game doesn't mean it hasn't sold as much as they say. It's like me saying I don't believe GTAV hasn't sold as much as it has just because I don't like the game. Flawed logic you have there.

I imagine Nintendo as a pale-skinned creature deep in a cave holding it's precious IPs until one day a hobbit comes along and says "You need to go online" and Nintendo is like "NO! We hates it!" and every time it has to do something online it's having conversations with itself in the reflection of a puddle "They want to take our precious away! We wont lets them! Restrictsy the demos we will"

@catsimboy: Can you think of any B2P multiplayer game that offers an unrestricted demo? Because I can't. Why would anyone buy the game if they could play it for free all year long?

@Tiwill44: They don't make their demos work during two hours of the day only because that's asinine. Only Nintendo would do something like that.

@catsimboy: ...Oh. Somehow I missed that part and I assumed the demo would be up and running for the entirety of that weekend, not just for a few hours at a time.

That is pretty strange indeed. It made sense back when the game wasn't out because they wanted to stress test the servers, but now it seems pointless.

--it IS a little nutty
--that wiiU has hardly sold 13million units
--but that splatoon has sold right under 5million units
--whereas(for a comparison)
--PS4 has sold well over 42 million units
--yet bloodborne has hardly sold 2 million units
--and halo 5 sold 4 million units

--i mean
--i am STILL not sure why nintendo is dropping the A-bomb on wiiU(killing it off as a failure)
--it seems if they would just make some damn AAAs for it(or hadda made)
--they could 'hang in there' a few more years
--drop the price of the wiiU(substantially)
--and get the wiiU 'units sold' numbers over the 20million units mark(a success for future reference)
--and make a little money off of games
--and count on 3ds to cover their ass in the meantime(as well as a few other products they sell)

--i cant be the only one
--that is shocked
--that nintendo is letting their 8th gen console
--their 6th home console(nintendo's 8th gen baby)
--just flush down the toilet(full-on abortion)
--especially
--since it still sells reasonably(around 25,000-35,000 units a week)
--and wiiU's AAAs sell high numbers
--mario kart 8 has sold around 8 million units
--SM3DW 4million+
--smash bros sold well
--mario maker sold over 3 million
--and NONE of their main AAAs sold under 1 million(are they aware of how many games do not even sell 1 million units?)
--most multi-plat AAAs usually hardly reach 4-5 million units sold

@TheZeroPercent: DASH MAN!!!

Really, it's not that hard when you think about it. A good deal of those sales numbers include bundles, so that jacks up the sales count. Not only that, but there isn't much else to buy on the Wii U. Bloodborne is a Souls game and casuals hate it. It's never been a mass market title unlike Halo, and PS4 owners have lots of options.

@Barighm:
--my point is
--nintendo just needs to swallow their pride
--and deal with the fact that wiiU is not gonna sell like wii did
--but
--that it is STILL a quality console(that has a SOLID if smaller 'user-base' and is still selling)
--and if they would properly manage it
--with price drops
--game bundles and discounts(like xbox has been doing with xb1)
--and even more quality AAA games
--wiiu could 'go down in history' as a small success
--instead of a tragedy level fail

Man I loved the test fires! I loved them so much that I preordered the game after the first test fire. I'm tempted to download the test fire demo even though I own the game.
