Splatterhouse dripping onto Wii VC

Namco's gory TurboGrafx-16 action game is headed to the Virtual Console next month, along with Double Dungeons.

While NEC's TurboGrafx-16 doesn't carry the same high profile as any of the other systems currently featured on the Wii's Virtual Console service, it does boast a number of games that gained notoriety--and in one case infamy--among 16-bit gamers of all stripes. Namco's side-scrolling action game Splatterhouse was one of the first violent games to cause a stir in the mainstream gaming world, and now it will be one of the first violent games to arrive on the Wii's Virtual Console.

Hudson Entertainment has updated its list of upcoming TG-16 Virtual Console games with news of Splatterhouse and the role-playing game Double Dungeons.

Originally released in 1990, Splatterhouse casts players in the role of a young man who must fight his way through a monster-infested mansion to save his girlfriend. Players can make use of meat cleavers, 2x4s, and shotguns to dispatch zombies, leeches, wolves, and even a bag-headed, chainsaw-armed...thing. A 1989 release, Double Dungeons was an RPG that gave players a first-person perspective as they traversed catacombs and did battle with slimes, hornets, and other denizens of dank caverns.

Splatterhouse and Double Dungeons are scheduled for release in March, with each game being available for 600 Wii Points ($6).

FallenOneX - funny man. But the truth is - the games from the old days sometimes suck as badly (if not worse) than ones we have now. In fact, it's a lot rarer today that I see a $60 game that's literally unplayable. Yeah Mario, Zelda, Metroid, et cetera are classics, but 90% of the remainder? Remember playing Aladdin, Jungle Book, Cool Spot, et cetera? Now remember those Genesis racing games where there were *no* other cars on the track? Would you really put them through the frustration of Kung Fu, Battletoads, or Abaddox? As far as Splatterhouse goes - I don't think "shock gaming" really holds up anymore. Back in the day Earthworm Jim was hilarious - now... I've seen better jokes in a game than cow flinging and space crows. The amazing gameplay (for the time) holds up no better than Boogerman. orangebrat - 9 out of 10 old games better than ones released today? That's simply not true - there are tens of thousands of old games, we hold up perhaps two hundred of those as examples of "good gaming" - but even the vast majority of those were arcade games. Crappy games continue to be made - but while I could pick up plenty of unplayable games - Ren & Stimpy, Garfield, et cetera based on my favorite characters back in the day - the "mediocre" games of today are at least *playable*. In Garfield it was complete unclear how you were supposed to dodge the floor to ceiling obstacles. Now movie games like Enter the Matrix may suck for the hardcore gamer, but they're playable, even somewhat enjoyable.

With all this complaing about the TG-16 games........ Tell me what your very first game system was. If it involves a CD or DVD, then shut up and go home. You're too young to remember when the original Super Mario Bros. was the best game you had ever seen on your television. These games are being marketed to the true hardcaore gamer: someone over the age of 32 that still plays videogames. If you're still playing Halo 17 years from now, then you're allowed to sit at the grownup table.
why is so many people happy about these old .. so old generation games.. i used to have a turbo graphix with Bonk and everything..they stink..
They don't stink. In most cases the classics are called classic for a reason. 9 times out of 10 the old games are better than anything released in the last 5 years.

$6 bucks is a steal for splatterhouse, wish that would come on my 360. The 2d graphics easily hold up today, and it was fun as hell!!

"crithon uh...... I think the hype around this game is really mythical. It's just that there aren't decent any decent Emulation of the Turbographic 16 that Wii players are willing to try out these games.... only to find out only a small handiful are decent. Splatterhouse was one of those "holy grails" of video games, especially with the covers of a big THUG with a hockey mask using a 2x4 really did give the promise of a Friday the Thirteenth video game that would top Mortal Kombat in the violence department. Only later did we get the proper Splatterhouse sequels on the Sega Genesis and then the audience just started to realize, "Uh, this isn't very a good game. I'll play Streets of Rage instead." So with that mind, I say avoid this game and play Streets of Rage instead." I'm going to have to agree with this...when I was young I remember playing this in the arcade and realizing back then it wasn't a well made game. The only thing good about it was 1980 shock value...which is nothing compared to todays standards.

One of the best things about the V.C. is giving new players the chance to see games from the days of Yore that they would otherwise miss entirely.

I had my TG-16 console modded by the Japanese import gaming store"Video Connection" to play PC Engine games. The first games I bought for my altered console were the Japanese version of Splatter house and The New Zealand story. The PC Engine version was the original arcade "Jason Vorhees" look of the main hero. In the north american version they changed the look of the main hero, so he didn't look like "Jason" which was a issue at the time. Similar to taking out the blood in Mortal Kombat 1 for the SuperNintendo. I hope the version on the VC is the Japanese/Arcade original.

It was called Splatterhouse in the arcades. It's one of the games I like to use to point out that once upon a time there were no age restrictions on games, and as a "kid" I could be playing Splatterhouse. Most of the BS started when Mortal Kombat came out, because that had "photorealistic" graphics (in it's time). So really it's not the subject matter that these legislators have a problem with, it's the realism of the imagery. That's why it's okay for Wile E Coyote to get run over by a truck at high speed, that's all good fun for kids because it looks like a cartoon.

Splatterhouse (which, for some odd reason I recall it being called "Slaughterhouse" in arcades when it was first released..) is the ORIGINAL horror game. I remember being shocked by it as a wee lad. I STILL love that series. And I STILL pop in 2 & 3 into the Genesis from time to time. Awesome addition to the VC. Now, to find a Wii..

I was just thinking the other day there needs to be a 3D update to this game on the Wii. How much fun would it be to swing around the remote like it was a 2x4 ? Anyway all they need to do is announce 3 more Turbo Grafix 16 and I'll be happy: Gates of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Vasteel.

Splatterhouse is a classic that really pushed the envelope of graphic gore on consoles. Its sequels didn't have the same uniqueness of the original, given the fact that most played the sequels on genesis and not the first, many do not know how good it was. That being said it's a mediocre side-scroller that only benefited from the gore to bring it up to interesting. I never played DD but it is considered by some to be among the worst TG16 games, and others to be among its best. So check out some retro-reviews to see if you may like it. This is one of the benefits of Gamespot's age, many of these VC games have existing reviews from when they originally came out. Now where is the VC release of Keith Courage? We've got the pack-ins for the NES (SMB), the Genesis (AB), the pack-in for the SNES is on foreign VC lists (SMW). The TG16's pack-in needs to be added to make it complete.

1) Splatterhouse is older than 1990 Gamespot. It was released in 1988 for the arcade with the PC Engine and the Turbo port released in 1990. 2) Next, the Turbo port sucks ass compared to the arcade version. The Turbo port even changed the mask to red (hopefully since they won't put the arcade port (which I hope they do, but doubt) at least put the PC engine version on instead of the Turbo version. Mostly because the PC engine did not change the 4th boss unlike the Turbo port. Also the hell mask is white in that version unlike the Turbo port which had a red mask (also changed the shape as well) If those who are curious who want to see the difference between the acrade version and the PC engine version here are the links. Watch all the Arcade videos, then watch the PC engine video. << LINK REMOVED >> - Arcade version << LINK REMOVED >> - PC Engine version Now tell me which one is better and which would you rather see on VC (knowing Wii could easily handle this).

This was fun. It's like playing as something you'd find wandering around Castlevania. Now.. are they going to push out Stormlord for Genesis? OMGB00BS! Compare either of these games to God of War and have a chuckle... but I think they helped make it possible.
