Splinter Cell Movie: "It's Going To Be Bad Ass," Producer Says

The newest script is finished and is headed to Tom Hardy for him to read.

One of the producers for the upcoming Splinter Cell movie has provided an update for how it's coming along and explained why star Tom Hardy is so excited to play Sam Fisher.

Regarding the status of the project, Basil Iwanyk told Collider that a script is finished and it's being sent to Hardy soon. If Hardy approves (he sent in notes about an earlier draft), then production should begin in earnest later this year, Iwanyk said. He added that the script is a "little long," but it's the best one that's been sent in so far.

No Caption Provided

Also in the interview, Iwanyk said the Splinter Cell movie has the potential to perform better at the box office than the Michael Fassbender-starring Assassin's Creed, which has made more than $210 million worldwide. This is because the producers are going to expand on the game's backstory, it sounds like. Instead of making it a retelling of any game in the series, it will be an action movie that people can enjoy even if they don't know the games.

"So the challenge of making Splinter Cell interesting was we didn't have this IP with a very specific backstory," he said. "That allowed us to make up our own world and really augment and fill out the characters. I don't think our movie will feel like a movie that came out of a video game, I think it'll feel like a badass, Tom Hardy action movie, which is what we wanted."

Iwanyk added that he doesn't anticipate the film receiving an R rating, but instead a "hard" PG-13. Story details are being kept under wraps, but Iwanyk said it probably won't be inspired by any real-world event. Also, it won't have a tone similar to James Bond or Jason Bourne films.

The Splinter Cell movie will instead try to break new ground.

"What's a world that we haven't seen yet? What's an area of the world and a conflict that we haven't really touched upon in movies in a long time, to make it feel fresh?" he said.

Finally, Iwanyk said Hardy is a gamer himself and has a lot of friends in the special ops word. "He wants to play this character [Sam Fisher] really, really badly," Iwanyk said.

No release date or supporting cast for the Splinter Cell movie have been announced. Bourne veteran Doug Liman was at one time attached to direct, but he has since dropped out, according to ScreenRant. Though the movie isn't even out yet, a sequel is reportedly in the works.

The latest entry in the Splinter Cell series, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, was released in August 2013.

Ubisoft is also making a movie based on The Division, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain.

I remember a flyer advertising the movie was included in the box for... oh, which one was it? Was it Chaos Theory? Or Double Agent? Either way, this movie's been in the oven for ages.

I'm not sure why the prevailing opinion in society is that movies based on games can never work, especially when movies based on comic books do; the characters and stories they're based on are simple and ridiculous in the extreme just like most video game stories, but the Marvel movies rock. There's nothing stopping a video game movie from being great, too.

Except the fact that everyone decides they're awful the moment they're announced, I suppose.

I was glad to see Warcraft do well in China, though. Apparently they don't have the same stigma against a movie's source material over there, and thanks to them, I get to hold out hope for a sequel. It may be in Chinese, but I'd understand.

Anyway, Splinter Cell is awesome, and is as fertile soil for a movie as the Bond novels were, I'd say, so no reason to write it off until it gets here.

No, it's not, because the patriotic American super-spy isn't even an American.

I hate this extra layer of make belief BS they add in Hollywood, as if there weren't enough actors suitable for the role. Terrible accents that really only convince the hearing impaired.

another movie adaptation of a famous video game franchise
years of experience tell me that it's going to be bad but I just really want to hold on to the flicker of hope in me that it'll turn out ok
I love Sam Fisher so it's gonna leave me a very bad taste if the movie turn out to be crap

As always, trying to appeal to as broad an audience as possible and with a shitty pg 13 rating stuck on it, another poor cash cow. "Instead of making it a retelling of any game in the series, it will be an action movie that people can enjoy even if they don't know the games." That could go either way, could be great if they stay very true to the main source material and feel of the earlier games or it could end up like the later Resident Evil films, 2 dimensional popcorn cheesiness riding on a name =P

I hope it's the first thing ; )

I think there's a typo there and that he didn't mean the movie is 'going to be bad ass', he meant it's 'going to be bad as the Assassin's Creed movie'.

It's going to be bad, end of. No video game movie is done well. Video games are different to movies, that's what Hollywood doesn't understand. You the player control the game, you don't do that with a movie.

@nickyparmar92: I guess the reverse works fine since many of the most movie-like video games have been the highest praised.

The last producer who went out of his way to claim his movie would be "bad ass" and be "a hard PG-13" gave us Suicide Squad.

@Thanatos2k: On GameFAQs when I see the headline on the Gamespot sidebar there's a line break so it just says "It's going to be bad"

I've had the game for nearly 3 years and I'm not even 1/3 the way thru it. It just does not keep my interest. Which incidentally seems to be the case for all Tom Clancy games I've played(Which is not a lot, but still).

@spartanx169x:

Which Splinter Cell do you own?

The first one is a great game, but Chaos Theory is probably my overall favorite. I'm surprised it doesn't hold your interest.

Here is how the exchange went from ubisoft to Tom hardy . Ubisoft tells them the lore - Writer watches Die Hard 4.0 instead- Producer gets script wrote in writers blood -Sends script to Tom Hardy with a 3rd class stamp- Tom hardy looks at the script and throws it in an open fire - Tom hardy is warm.

@adamswords: At least Tom Hardy got something out of it. ;)

After watching how fkn amazing he was in Taboo, Tinker Tailor, Mad Max, and The Revenant, I just don't get why he would take this gig.

@Pyrosa: Maybe its a good script? Unlike other franchises splinter cell could work as a movie especially if they use Tom Clancy's books to help influence the movie. Global Terrorist plot etc, mission impossible, die hard, james bond, borne it works.

Put away the shaky cam and add in some intelligence. This has potential since it is based on Tom Clancy's writings.

@straightcur: As far as I know Tom Clancy never actually wrote a Splinter Cell novel, he just endorsed the concept of the game when Ubisoft presented it to him way back when

This movie could actually work just as a simple Borne-like action thriller. All they have to do is not screw it up with bad writing... oh right, this is Hollywood where writers get jobs based on which knob they polished last night. You can't put much faith in any industry where Ehren Kruger (Transformers series among other crap) continues to get work.

Finally, Hollywood cast an actor not just because they are popular, but because they are actually right for the role!! And on the side note, I watched Bronson lastnight! lol
