Spyro And Crash Bandicoot Reboot Studio, Toys For Bob, Wants To Bring Back Banjo-Kazooie Next

"I think we can all agree Banjo's been hibernating long enough, right?" Toys for Bob co-studio head and creative director Paul Yan said.

No one is doing more for mascot platformers than Toys for Bob. Since 2018, the formerly Microsoft-owned studio has released the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Crash Bandicoot 4, and Crash Team Rumble, reinvigorating two beloved but largely stagnant franchises. Now, Toys for Bob co-studio head and creative director Paul Yan says the studio has its eyes on another iconic platforming series: Banjo-Kazooie.

In a recent interview with CanadianGuyEh--which was then reported by Windows Central--Yan discussed Toys for Bob's upcoming projects. On top of seemingly teasing a new entry in the Spyro the Dragon series, Yan expressed the team's desire to work with Xbox on bringing back the dynamic bird and bear duo, Banjo-Kazooie.

"One company we'd like to work with is one we're already working with--Team Xbox! They've been a great partner and they also have a very interesting roster of characters that Toys for Bob could have a lot of fun with. The honey bear is the first one that comes to mind--I think we can all agree Banjo's been hibernating long enough, right?" Yan said.

Though this certainly doesn't mean a Banjo-Kazooie remake or reboot is already in the works, Toys for Bob's past work and relationship with Xbox makes this collaboration seem more like a matter of "when" than "if." Despite the studio breaking apart from the Microsoft-owned studio Activision back in 2023, it has continued to work closely with Xbox, and is currently collaborating with the company on an upcoming project that many speculate to be Spyro the Dragon 4. Though Yan said he "can't spill the beans just yet" on the upcoming project, he assured fans that development is going well.

"I will say that we're very much in the thick of development. The team is very thrilled about how the experience is shaping up. This game is big and ambitious and pushes our craft to new heights."

Prior to leaving Activision, Toys for Bob had been moved from working on the whimsical platformers it's known for to assist the Call of Duty series as a support studio. According to a former senior concept artist, Nicholas Kole, the team was also forced to scrap Crash Bandicoot 5. After 86 employees were laid off from the studio as a part of Microsoft's 2023 mass layoffs, the studio sought, and was given, independence.

Would love to see Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie get the remake treatment like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro The Dragon.

@pillarrocks: Yeah, the Crash and Spyro remasters were very well done, and Banjo-Tooie's N64 frame rate isn't that good (I did think highly of both Banjo games' performances and control schemes on the Xbox 360).

Please, BRING BACK THE BANJO-KAZOOIE AND CONKER FRANCHISES ASAP ALREADY!!! Also, Nintendo should at least buy back Rare's classic franchises, not the company itself since Rare itself is not the same anymore because the original staff from the SNES and N64 days, including the co-founders Chris and Tim Stamper, have left the company back in the late 2000s.

@nintendians: Banjo/Tooie was a bit tedious, but it was still a fun game, but not as bad as DK64. Now that game was truly tedious to go back & forth to collect stuff.

@davillain: true for dk64, but i actually enjoy it more than i do for both "banjo" games.

haven't play "banjo nuts and bolts" and probably won't play it at all.

@davillain: To be honest, having to go back and forth to Mumbo's hut and Wumba's tent to turn into characters that only have 1 move feels a lot more tedious to me nowadays. I thought the transformations were awesome back then, but that novelty isn't really there anymore.

I still love Tooie a bit more than Kazooie for its atmosphere, but I always lose interest at the gameplay by the time I reach Grunty Industries. Witchyworld is peak videogames though.

I've gotten 101% in DK64 twice so far, once on N64 and once on Wii U. I'll probably do it a third time when the Analogue 3D comes out, I dunno... I never really got the hate for the game, it's my favorite platformer on N64 after Mario 64. Beaver Bother is a mildly annoying minigame barrel, but that's about it for me.

(Just offering a different perspective, I know the Tag Barrel isn't very popular on the internet so I get it if you disagree.)

Please do. Because every old school gamer is losing their freaking minds right now at the fact that we had more clones of banjo kazooie then we got teaser for a new one. All while Rare is being owned by one of the richest companies of all time.

Like Jesus, my guy, money & manpower aren't the issue. So just make the game.

I'd honestly love to see the two main games and maybe even the GBA title get some work done and get some renewed interest...maybe even hype for a proper sequel that isn't Nuts & Bolts.

As a huge fan of Banjo/Kazooie games, please don't give me hope. Please tell Toys for Bob is serious about bringing back Banjo/Kazooie? If Astrobot proves anything that a good platform game with the right team can make it work.
