Spyro Reignited Trilogy For PS4 And Xbox One Announced

Spyro: Reignited is coming soon.

79 Comments

With Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy having been a huge success, Activision is launching another new remaster package soon involving another popular PS1 series, Spyro. The company today announced Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, which features updated versions of the first three Spyro games: 1998's Spyro the Dragon, 1999's Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (Gateway to Glimmer in Europe and Australia), and 2000's Spyro: Year of the Dragon. Reignited releases on September 21, priced at $40 in the United States.

The included games were originally developed by Insomniac Games, but the Activision subsidiary Toys for Bob is handling the remasters. They are being made "from the ground up" for PS4 and Xbox One. Toys for Bob has a long history with the Spyro franchise, as the studio released the first Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure game and other installments in the toys-to-life series. The news comes after previous rumors and a very recent retailer leak.

All of the levels from the original three games are "mapped faithfully," Activision says; you can see a screenshot comparison here. As for what's new, Activision said there are "enhanced reward sequences," better-looking environments, updated controls, new lighting effects, and "recreated" cinematics. Additionally, the characters have been "creatively re-imagined with additional flair." The game will feature a "re-imagining" of Stewart Copeland's original soundtracks.

Voice actor Tom Kenny, who originally voiced Spyro in Spyro 2 and Year of the Dragon, is coming back to voice the dragon yet again. Carlos Alazraqui voiced Spyro in the first game. It's not immediately clear if Kenny is taking over in the remaster package. Kenny is perhaps best known for voicing SpongeBob Squarepants.

To celebrate this announcement, Activision tucked a cool Easter egg into the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Gamers in North America can now enter the famous video game code ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → Square at the Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped title screen to queue up the Reignited trailer (which you can see in the embed above).

Thanks God I wont be forced to buy an inferior version (PS4) just because there was no other option... (as it happen with Sony Exclusives)

I will have the best Version at 4k on Xbox one X!

@michellebennet: Amen. I feel sorry for all those puny lesserlings brainwashed by advertising and subsequently tricked out of their tiny cashlode treasures for an inferior version (PS4/PS4Pro). You're very kind to point this out.

@playstationzone:

1. Having more games doesn't mean anything if they look outdated by now. And most exclusives are irrelevant and negligible. With a very few exceptions

2. Both Phil Spencer and Yoshida cares about getting our money of course. Difference is, MS does it by offering quality services like GamePass (including launch titles) , Backwards compatibility (enhanced to 4k), and the best online experience of any console.

While Sony just takes advantage of the 'Playstation' brand popularity to force people with bad policies, bad services, bad online, etc... just because they can. And why they can? because they know their loyal fanboys will buy and praise everything their god Sony does, without complaining.

I thought this was a Remake? If this is a Remaster then Spyro's graphics were way better than what I remember.

@Mogan: Mogan the Gentleman, always eager to jump to the aid of a useraccount in distress, instead of mocking it for its shortcomings. And he's ignored, while my intolerant and insensitive remark just below is greeted with the approval of our brethren. Humanity's gone down the drain, my dear friend.

Just like the Crash games, never played the originals, so looking forward to the remakes! Hopefully they're as well done as the Crash ones.

@Ansem_Rev: wouldn't the worst version be the original Xbox one version? You know since that's still the weakest console of the 4. Or potentially the switch version if that exists. Also what kaes you think the pro or the x version will be that different? It's Spyro

@filmauteur100: There were a number of such HD trilogies released on PS3. I wish they would simply port them for PS4. How hard is that? Judging by what Naughty Dog had to go through with "The Last of Us" apparently it's a trip through hell. But then again not every game is "The Last of Us".

@Xristophoros: So it is, I didn't realize, thank you. Apparently also "Jak X: Combat Racing" is also available on PS4, with trophies too. One less reason to hold onto the PS3. Well done, Sony.

just goes to show the switch is not a priority for any 3rd party publisher. only indi games are finding their way to the platform. spyro would have been a good fit, though, but poor 3rd party relations is the norm for nintendo i guess. nothing has changed since the wii u in that regard. yes, spyro might eventually find its way to the switch, but why is it not releasing at the same time as the other platforms?

@Xristophoros:

The same reason Square-Enix is screwing American Nintendo owners with their Dragon Quest games, Capcom is screwing Nintendo owners with their Megaman Legacy Collection and Disney Afternoon Collection titles.

Because even though these games are exactly the kind of games that sell massive numbers on Nintendo systems, their bias' against Nintendo are more important to these companies than profits.

@professor_megaman: dragon quest builders already hit the switch and dragon quest xi will eventually get released on the platform, but yes, it seems like 3rd parties are treating switch owners like second class citizens. there is no effort being made to get the switch releases out on the same day as the other platforms... dq xi in particular might not even get a release this year.

@Xristophoros: Because the Switch is using hardware and software not familiar to most 3rd party developers. It takes time to optimize them for the Switch. Still not the ideal solution to Nintendo's lack of 3rd party games but at least they're trying to make contact with different developers now.

@cboye18: the ps3 hardware was more obscure and complex to developers than the switch is... yet ps3 got all the 3rd party games on their initial release dates. part of the issue with the switch could be that publishers were expecting it to fail and didn't even consider it to be a viable platform while spyro was being developed years ago. now they are playing catchup in some cases. in other cases, the hardware is too weak to bother with.

@Xristophoros:

PS3 hardware also had relative power parity with 360. That’s part of the difference.

Also, there were a lot of third party games that PS3 didn’t get until a year or so later.
