Square Enix Delays Avengers Game--Here's The New Release Date

Iron Man and the team won't assemble until a bit later.

The upcoming Marvel's Avengers game has been delayed. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have announced that the game is running late, and won't release until a few months after we expected it. Previously scheduled for launch in May, Avengers' release date is now set for September 4, 2020. The news coincides with the delay of Final Fantasy VII Remake, another much-anticipated Square Enix game.

In a post written by Scot Amos and Ron Rosenberg, the co-studio heads of Crystal Dynamics, the two describe their desire to "deliver the ultimate Avengers gaming experience." They say the delay is necessary to make that happen.

Now Playing: Square Enix Delays Final Fantasy 7 Remake & Avengers - GS News Update

"As fans ourselves, it's an honor and a privilege to work with these legendary characters and we know what these super heroes mean to us and true believers around the world," the two wrote. "When we set out to bring you our vision for Marvel's Avengers, we committed to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come. To that end, we will spend this additional development time focusing on fine tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve.

"The worldwide teams working on Marvel's Avengers sincerely appreciate the support you've shown us. We thrive on your enthusiasm and feedback and we can't wait to show you more. We apologize for the delay. We're confident it will be worth the wait."

After being announced back in 2017 as The Avengers Project, Marvel's Avengers was unveiled at E3 2019. At the time, the game received criticism for some for the look of its characters, as well as unclear messaging about what form the game would take. We've since gotten some clarity on the structure of the game and changes have been made to its visuals.

When it arrives in September, Avengers will be released for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Google Stadia. You can learn more about it in our Avengers pre-order guide.

I think it’s going to hurt sales on the current-gen system because we all know that they are going to double dip and release it on nextgen hardware!

Has any game made by Square Enix ever come out on time?

I gotta say, I don't really care. The reveals of the gameplay have been so vague, I honestly can't tell if this looks like a good game or not. I have never been less excited for a game release from an IP that I love.

@drnknnmd: Whenever they're vague about gameplay in trailers it's a massive red flag. I really hope people have learned from Anthem.

@drnknnmd: I can see it going either way based on gameplay videos. Combat looks similar to other superhero and action games so it basically comes down to execution and how deep the gameplay and combat it. It's possible it could be as good as any other game with similar combat or it could feel like a knock off.

I don't believe that the only reason behind this delay is about making improvements. There are no Marvel movies running right now (from the MCU), so this is actually smart to wait for new movies to be out and then release the game, so everyone will be in the hype again.

@inmycontrol: it could have to do with some of the other games releasing around the same time. With Cyberpunk 2077 releasing mid April and TLOU2 dropping at the end of May it was a tough spot for Avengers to be sandwiched in between those games.

@rickjamesia: it makes perfect sense. With 2077 and especially TLOU2 it wouldn't be to good for Square to release in May. The movies have nothing to do with it.

Wow I really wanted this on the PC, but at least it should be that much better.

Probably best to delay it to September 2021 or beyond. It doesn't look very good.

A delay makes sense when a game is buggy, or there are some minor tweaks that can make a big difference. Unfortunately it was the core gameplay for this title that looked incredibly poor and uninspired. That's not something you can fix in four months imo.

Should be delayed indefinitely.

@systemoverload: I disagree. There's a ton of potential here. Whether they pull it off, we will have to wait and see.

@Blueresident87: It's Square Enix. The odds of them pulling it off are tiny.

I'm still a little skeptical about how good the game will actually be.

Meh, I feel either way this will be a clunky brawler with annoying QTE all throughout. This is only relevant to interest because of the already established fanbase. They better make real smart use of the extra time.

@lonesamurai00: I think the last spider man game that I even gave a good play through was shattered dimensions.

From the beginning it seems weird they were dropping two high profile games belonging to the same company, and almost on the same month. I think now is better because it gives more time to either game.

Hmm… Seems square is on the “delay path”.

News of this and FF7 remake in the same day. Hope this isn’t a sign of something bad brewing over there at Square Enix.

As long as the developers use the extra time to give each title that finishing touch it needs I’m all for it.

Unfortunate, but better late than unfinished I would say.

I was looking forward to this, so the delay kind of sucks. Plus, come fall all of my attention will be on the upcoming PS5 and Series X. But it's not like I'm not still going to be swamped with games this spring. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@mogan: Especially while MCU is hitting it's strive, who would miss out capitalizing on Marvel brand?

Saw this coming. From the complaints on the look of the characters to the general lack of clarity as to what kind of game we can expect, a few more months for some changes and better marketing tactics could help

@cejay0813: Yup, not to mention that people hate the idea of Kamala Khan as the protagonist. More so now, that it's been shown that Disney/Marvel have been artificially raising her popularity.

@alex33x: And what exactly is wrong with Kamala Khan as the protagonist? Also where did you read Marvel is artificially raising her popularity? I can't find anything of the sort via google.

@alex33x: True; I was a little thrown off by that but as long as the gameplay is good and we get to be all the other Avengers throughout the story and maybe at will in the endgame, I'd be fine
