Square Enix, Eidos collaborating on new project

First joint venture between Japanese company and new subsidiary being undertaken at Deus Ex 3, Thief 4 development house in Montreal.

In July, Square Enix retired the Eidos publishing label, having purchased the UK-based outfit as part of an initiative to better tap into the global audience earlier this year. However, Eidos' studios remain active. The development arm is currently at work on new installments in such Western franchises as Hitman, Tomb Raider, and Thief--games that will join upcoming Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest projects bearing the Square Enix moniker.

Could it be Kingdom Hearts: The JC Denton Affair?
Could it be Kingdom Hearts: The JC Denton Affair?

As could be expected, though, Square Enix's development teams and Eidos' studios will be doing some intermingling going forward. On hand at the Montreal Games Summit today, UK gaming magazine Develop reports that Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has confirmed that the company's first game to bear influences from both the Japanese developer and its British subsidiary is in development at Eidos Montreal.

The new Eidos Montreal project "would be the first collaboration between Square Enix and Montreal," Wada reportedly told summit attendees. "We would like to be able to create a new title that is made by the group as one." Wada reportedly went on to note that the new project is still largely in a gestation phase, and he did not indicate whether or not it would be an original property.

Founded in February 2007, Eidos Montreal is currently known to be working on to other high-profile projects. In November 2007, Eidos revealed that the Canadian studio was crafting Deus Ex 3, which is due in fall 2010. In May of this year, Eidos Montreal announced that development was under way on another of its classic franchises, Thief 4.

<< LINK REMOVED >> They're not stealth games. They're better. At least, Deus Ex and Hitman, you may choose the subtle path. Or you may go all out, guns blazing. Though that better describes Hitman than Deus Ex, which is an RPG where you have more choices than just quiet or loud.

huge thief fan. lets just hope there is ; - no: 3rd person view (just peer around the corner) - no: quick time events - no: dagger ( sword for self defence - dagger is not needed you are not an assassin) - no: health regen - Much less free running (it should be nothing like assassins creed, although climbing a bit more would be nice) - yes: huge open world city (or multiple)- with lots of interiors (no loading to a new area to get away from guards) - yes: infamy rating (so guards don't instantly recognize you and come after you unless you are trespassing) - yes: rope arrows - yes: blackjack - yes: intelligent enemies - yes: higher difficultly (less killing more stealing etc) basicly, updated thief 2 would be perfect

C'mon.. Whats wrong with you guys? Just because you dun like JRPG doesn't mean that SE is bad in game designing at all. Please do not be bias.. Did too much gaming make you become so narrow minded? Just like kdawg88 says SE + eidos may give new elements to western games as it start to feel more and more generic.. And With SE high graphic skills and Eidos's brain.. I think both of them are gona be kick ass..

I'm glad to see Thief 4 is going to be developed...... I just hope it has some of the same voice actors for the guards and such, The comedy that people on the street and guards presented in the last 3 games was the life of the series not to mention the fun missions......

Considering that in Deus Ex, the world has very much been subjected to globalization, I would not be surprised if some Japanese RPG elements seep into the next Deus Ex game if Square Enix happens to have a say in that.

I don't know what to say...who would've thought we'd see Deus Ex touched by Japan? On the one hand it could be beneficial for story based elements of the game, on the other hand...it could completely screw the project, assuming that it was going to be a good game in the first place. Again...I don't know what to say.

I remember playing the original Thief on my old PC and being blown away by the light dynamics and the stealth elements, DEUS-EX also blew me away with the in depth gameplay and variety of elements involved (stealth, puzzle solving, upgrades, etc), my only hope is that the original developers are involved.

I LOVE the thief series. First games I ever modded. I DO NOT trust Square Enix to make a game for Americans worth playing. There was a time when they excelled at great games. In the last decade they have spent too much time watching anime and us westerners cannot follow their storyline shanangians. Expect Thief by square to be all about saving the world and finding crystals, rescuing princesses, and riding giant chickens. BTW everyone knows deus ex 2 was a friken greek tragedy.

Ooh, Deus Ex 3 and Thief 4! Maybe SE it will make something worth while for a change....as long as the PC version isn't so riddled with indications of a lazy port. Other then that I can't wait as these are two great game series that I would love to see in action with the possibilities of my current PC specs. ~grin~

I still think that, for the most part, Square Enix is at least trying for quality. They don't always make it, but they aren't lazy. Let's not forget that Square was the publisher for the Japanese edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum. Arkham Asylum alone makes me convinced that the guys at Eidos still have the chops needed to make great games and that Square will stay out of the way as they make them. You don't even have to draw a crooked line to figure out how Thief and Batman are cousins set in different eras. Still, my big worry with both franchises is that the guy I think of as most responsible for their success is currently in Texas working on the next Mickey Mouse game. Maybe I'm only biased as a fellow Texan--but maybe I'm a little nervous about two incredibly narrative games being so far removed from their origins. Doesn't mean I'm not excited--I just picked up a copy of Deus Ex: Invisible War via Steam so that I can play through it again before the sequel hits.

I just wish this doesnt mean square enix will be allowed to screw with Thief, hitman, deus ex, and soul reaver/blood omen. I really hope so. Nothing like Garrett going to steal pokeballs, as someone stated below..Great comment by the way.

I don't get angry very often, but MagicTestacle you've really set a new standard for ignorance. If you don't have anything but ill-informed, stereotypical garbage to share with us, maybe don't bother next time.

Here's a conversation from a cinematic in Deus Ex 3 by SE: Nakamuro, the Dragon Warrior of Zuzu, the sun princess who killed the father of Suzuki, the robot god of computers, who gave birth to Lau, the magician of Fecal Domination, says, to himself: "I must go now, where to? Giant forest, PROTECT ME! Master Hiroshi trained me and killed my friend, I must avenge my step sister. But HOW?!". - goes nuts, striking the air, showing his martial arts skills to the wind. - suddenly, a tiny happy rabbit like creature enters the area, and says: Chi Ku WAAWAWA!!! - Then an old man in a kimono enters, eyes closed, faced down, and speaks: "This is not your fault, he killed one of my twins for money, mushrooms are not to blame, only HONOR!" - then they fight. That's your new story. Let's all hold hands and pray to the sun princess that they won't let an actual Japanese guy go near the studio...

At least Square are working with Eidos, and not just consuming them and spitting them out the other side. It'd be nice if Square let them get on with their normal games, but be there if they wanted any advice (or people) if they decided to do an RPG or something. Ideal situation - Legacy of Kain RPG!!! Now that would be awesome.

Deus-Ex, was originaly a thinking mans FPS, was one of the first games ever to introduce real time lighting as a way to evade enemies (think Thief was the first), i want a strategic, stealthy, immersive FPS, not a stupid eastern influenced run-jump-gun fest with silly dragons, spells and fairy dust.

a new Thief game would be cool actually :) a point to all who are saying things like 'oh no this means Lara croft will have pink hair' or 'this will ruin the *insert game name here*' No it wont, they will keep the teams working on what there good at. for E.g. the Dragon quest series ( enix ) became much more globally successful since merging with squaresoft & in my opinion is still a fantastic game. Arkum Asylum was an awesome game & Eidos needed a kick back into form.
