Square Enix Montreal's next-gen Hitman reportedly canceled, publisher responds [UPDATE]

Publisher provides statement clarifying the matter.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, a Square Enix representative provided a statement to GameSpot on the matter.

"There's a bit of confusion around the Hitman projects currently in development at Square Enix-owned studios and so we wanted to take the time to clarify what each studio is working on to clear up some of this confusion. Io-Interactive is developing a new, AAA Hitman game that will be coming to PC and next-gen consoles and Square Enix Montreal is fully focused on mobile development of games some of which are related to the Hitman franchise," the representative said. "We look forward to sharing more details about these titles later this year."

The original story is below.

Square Enix Montreal's next-generation Hitman game has been canceled, according to the LinkedIn profile of a senior game designer at the studio. This project was originally announced as part of the outfit's inception in November 2012, though no details about it ever came to light.

Videogamer, which spotted the LinkedIn page, also found that another developer's resume claims Square Enix Montreal is working on a new Hitman game for iOS and Android. We have reached out to Square Enix for comment, but haven't heard back at press time.

Hitman fans needn't take the news as all bad, however, as another "AAA" Hitman game remains in development at series creator IO Interactive. This game was in pre-production as of June 2012 and its current development status is unknown.

The most recent core Hitman game was November 2012's Hitman: Absolution. For more on that game, check out GameSpot's review.

Good. Absolution blew. This franchise should not have even made it into the 360/PS3 gen, it was done after Hitman 2.

<< LINK REMOVED >>SquareEnix Montreal and Eidos Montreal is two studios. SquareEnix Montreal was actually made to make Hitman games not take 6 years to come out, sort of like the Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and so on, franchises.

Wow, a clarification that actually cleared some stuff up! They didn't say anything we didn't already know, but they confirmed some stuff at least.

What I would kill just to see the sights of 47 in Dubai.....

*probably some other targets*

IOI should put interesting settings just like they did with Hitman 2. Blood Money and Absolution has too much "America" in it and it's high time we start to see a bit more of Europe.

One thing I deeply hated about Absolution was the 'murcianization..previous Hitman entries took place around the globe New Zealand,Spain,Australia,U.S,China,India,Portugal etc. while 95% of Absolution takes place in Chicago -_-

@honeycomb06@Flonne_N_EtnaI think it'd be better if someone, perhaps you, just made a Saint's Row mod involving Hitman. Hitman is one of the few stealth franchises that hasn't gone all-action yet. I fear that the new Thief game might not be what the other games offered, but that remains to be seen.

While Absolution was a good game...it had some crushingly bad design choices, the fact that they eliminated the map and broke down the levels into parts was extremely disappointing...true hitman fans know that map was one of the most important elements in the previous games if you wanted to intelligently and silently murder your target as the levels were sprawling and you needed to strategize and boy wasn't it just a fantastic formula..

I don't have much hopes for the next one though as I've read an interview with the director a long time back and he mentioned that the stealth element in Absolution was fine but he found the action to be disappointing...what does this tell you?

I think sites just come up with stories to prod info out of the developers. This really seems like a case of that. There have been tons of false statements made by sites recently about a game being worked on or canceled then the devs show up to denounce. Genius really, but could end badly for a site if they don't watch their butts.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Companies have already a method for dealing with that and it's called "No comments" or the longer version "we don't comment on speculations or rumours". Silence the rumour makers with silence, that's the companies' trick and it often works.

Absolution was good but there were things I didn't like about it, like the instinct meter..
if I'm dressed as a cop, I should be able to just walk by all the other cops.

Some of the levels were boring too, I like levels like the mental hospital and the big Christmas party in that house in the mountains in Contracts.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Doesn't need a reboot. The main stories have always been the weak points of the series, it's the individual hits have always been the stronger elements.

If they make a reboot they will have to through more origin and the agency story missions, and less one off contracted hits.
