SSX to shred in January 2012

PS3, 360 revamp of EA's snowboarding series will hit the virtual slopes in the middle of ski season next year.

The 2010-2011 ski season may be winding down, but the hype train for the new SSX is just warming up. The new snowboarding game from Electronic Arts, which was revealed last December, was shown off to the press as part of a recent showcase by the publisher. During the course of the presentation, the release window for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title was revealed to be January 2012--right in the middle of the 2011-2012 ski season.

SSX will feature the tricks its predecessors were known for.
SSX will feature the tricks its predecessors were known for.

As outlined in GameSpot's brand-new preview, SSX recently dropped the subtitle "Deadly Descents." Rather than the more serious game that appeared to be teased during its reveal trailer, the game will indeed feature the insane tricks and high-speed racing the series was previously known for. However, in a break with the past, there will be no boundaries on the mountain, allowing players to free-ride virtually anywhere they please.

During the presentation, creative director Todd Batty described the three foundations of SSX as being "Race It," "Trick It," and "Survive It." The latter will be on full display during the game's Survival mode, which will have players try to descend a mountain under extreme conditions. Blizzards, avalanches, rock slides, and fog will be common in this mode, which will also offer specialized gear, such as an ice axe and wing suit to escape hairy situations.

2012!?!? WTF!! That's ridiculous. I thought this game was nearing completion. The game looks like it'll be awesome, but waiting 9 months just to play it is going to suck.

@Phil-teh-Pirate Spot on. That's my views exactly.. Some games don't need the free-roam.

Am I the only one who misses the arcade style extreme sports games? SSX Tricky, Tony Hawks 3, Matt Hoffmans BMX great games that I now miss against this "roam everywhere, trick anything" pseudo realism. I'm sure it'll be a good game just like SSX3 was, but how much freedom will you ever truely have on a snowboard whilst going down a mountain? Its not like you can turn round and pull yourself up to get back to that cool spot you saw...Unless they add Skates position markers.

I'm glad they dropped the subtitle, and on that note the game looks much better now than in initial previews. Keep up the good work guys!

2012..... are you serious!! I cant wait that long! :) But, its worth it. Usually, games that take awhile to make means that they are working very hard on the game, for it can be its best, and not rushed.

Free riding? Uber tricks? No serious setting? Welcome back, SSX. You have been missed.

It wouldn't be SSX without the insane tricks and high speed racing.
