Star Citizen Passes $141 Million as Dev Teases 2017 Plans

PC space game reaches new heights to start the New Year.

The crowdfunded PC space game Star Citizen starts the New Year with a big number: $141 million. That's how much money the ambitious title has brought in from backers.

No Caption Provided

Not only that, but developer Cloud Imperium Games boss Chris Roberts has released a "Happy New Year" statement in which it talked about some of its plans for Star Citizen in the New Year.

In his statement, Roberts started off by saying efforts will be made to refine and enhance the game's engine, Lumberyard. Just before the New Year, the developer announced that it was moving on from Crytek's CryEngine and instead use Amazon's engine.

Roberts went on say that it's been nice to see the positive reaction to Star Citizen's Alpha 2.6 release, adding that there are plans in place for another update to this update. Update 2.6.1. will contain some features that "slipped out of 2.6," as well as bug fixes and more.

You can read Roberts' complete statement below (via DualShockers):

Happy New Year!

There are many exciting things in store for Star Citizen this year. We'll continue to modify and improve our game engine to better suit Star Citizen's unique needs. Gameplay will get deeper as new systems come online to provide players the chance to do more than pew-pew. I also expect exciting advancements as we integrate our revolutionary tech, like subsumption and procedural planets, into the game. On the Community front, we’ll be releasing Spectrum, our new and improved community platform, and revamping our current shows and adding new ones in an effort to best communicate with all of you.

This week Star Citizen devs got back to work after some much deserved time off. Presently the Production Team is huddled with the different team leads updating and detailing out the tasks we have for this year. You’ll begin to see some of these details once we've had the opportunity to refine the Star Citizen and Squadron 42 schedules.

We were happy to see positive feedback from the Alpha 2.6 release and impressed by the number of stunning videos and images being created with the new camera controls. We have been digesting both our own and your thoughts on Alpha 2.6 now that it has been live for two weeks. We are planning releasing an incremental patch, 2.6.1 with some of the features that slipped out of 2.6, bug fixes for increased stability (although 2.6 was possibly our most stable patch to date) as well as continued balance and gameplay tweaks. Expect to hear more details on timing in the next couple of weeks.

2016 was a noteworthy year in Star Citizen’s development. 2017 with Squadron 42 and Alpha 3.0 is looking to be even better.

-- Chris Roberts

So, are we looking at a 2025 launch date? 2030? Or are they going to go the Sims 4 route and release the game unfinished and keep adding stuff for the next 10 years? Or is it the Fallout 4 model, where they release the game unfinished and leave the fixes to the mod community? Or is it the usual crowdfunding schtick, where they promise a game, then fold before the game is released?

I mean, they STILL can't even get the game stable enough that the player can get into a ship without falling through the fricken architecture. It's pathetic. It's great to have big ideas, but at some point you have to actually, you know, make them work.

@druntebob: In what way does that contradict what I said? The way it's going, there will never be a game. It's always going to be in alpha. That's my point.

Wish these guys would move from having 'another year of great ideas' to lets just deliver the damn project to completion. I've transitioned from being in awe of the plan and inspired by the direction to.. meh if i never delivered a completed project id be out of a job.

The white elephant of gaming this century. Too much money is not creating the required burn rate to force a developer to deliver the game. CIG don't need to deliver a game.. ever... Chris Roberts can keep working on perfecting the game, but as someone said to me "perfection is the enemy of good"

@giuliocc: The problem is, he's NOT working on perfecting the game. Instead, he's continually developing new ideas and new mechanisms, and altering mechanisms, then leaving everything half-completed. If he would complete something - anything - to perfection, we could be playing a somewhat finished game. It's an issue of "too many chiefs, not enough indians" - what they need over there are fewer ideas guys and more engineers - people who can get all the great ideas to actually work.

What's sad is so many people are aware this is a scam and yet there are still those thinking this is the best game never made. Go back to those games that looked so awesome at E3 (typically Ubisoft titles) and look what actually released.

Difference here is, those games saw the light of day, as downgraded as they were.

Odd, no mention of layoffs or pending project implosion. Wasn't 3.0 meant to be out already?

I'm not sure that Roberts is doing anything differently than what other devs do, but the business model is somewhat untested and therefore untrustworthy. If Roberts wants to have the biggest, most definitive space sim ever, he's going to have to hype the game to get the backers, whereas a publisher already has the resources to fund the devs. Since this project is grown to such proportions (with little delivery but endless alphas), I think it's perfectly appropriate for people to be skeptical.

@93ChevyNut: It's not really endless alphas its different game modules which are also used to test and balance. Had this game been picked up by a developer I think it would be a vastly inferior product and probably never seen the light of day as Roberts wouldn't have total creative control. If there was zero transparency being skeptical is perfectly reasonable. But considering they have some pretty big Hollywood actors who did full motion capture for this game. I doubt they'd tarnish their reputations by being part of a scam.

@ccgod: I'm not at all saying it's a scam and I agree he has the credibility and he's not going to tarnish that. But the degree of feature creep would be unsettling to someone who backed the game. Heck, I haven't backed the game but I can't wait to play it in its "finished" form. It just seems like there's a lot of "Wouldn't it be cool if we did this!" and those people usually go on to make great games, but often need someone to say "Yes it would, but let's button this up first."

That's all I'm saying. I'm not saying Roberts is a criminal or anything like so many others are.

Lol, all these haters. I bought this game, one-time payment. $60, didn't care. Now I can putz around the engines and learn what the game is actually trying to accomplish. Not a bad investment. You don't have to keep putting money into this.

This must be the first game in history where the more money received decreases the likelihood of completion.

@goodbye77: I'm guessing he found the article from someone in California sued because he spent a ton on the game then ran into finical troubles and tried getting a refund on the game to bail him self out of debt.

@lithus: that's because there's idiots out there who don't understand anything about game development no serioius backer is looking for a refund. No NMS is awful and i said it would be awful since i first saw it. They didn't get a full studio until earlyish last year. So its really only been in full production a little more than a year.

@Supabul: No, it wouldn't be a ponzi scheme. Not sure you know what that is. This would be a next-day scheme, where the subjective becomes the objective. Always a delay, always an excuse.
