Star Fox 64 3D Hands-On

We do several barrel rolls in the 3DS's enhanced remake of the Nintendo 64 classic Star Fox 3D.

Nintendo's second batch of 3DS titles, as revealed at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, will bring a host of well-loved Nintendo properties to its newest handheld console. Leading the charge is Star Fox 64 3D, a remake of the 1997 N64 title Star Fox 64, jazzed up with stereoscopic visuals and the option to steer your Arwing starfighter by tilting the 3DS. We got our hands on the enhanced remake at Nintendo's Unleashed booth at the London Film and Comic Con, which is on in Earls Court this weekend. We played the medal-chasing Score Attack mode, taking in the sights across three of the Lylat Systems' locations: the rural planet Corneria, the asteroid field Meteo, and the surface of the star Solar.

What's that? Do a barrel roll?
What's that? Do a barrel roll?

The game plays like the original; Fox's Arwing flies a set path through a mission location, leaving you to pilot the plane around the screen, dodging obstacles and blasting enemies. You can brake and accelerate to nip through, for instance, clusters of asteroids and perform somersaults and the requisite barrel rolls to outmanoeuvre enemy aircraft. The fight with the boss character at the end of the Corneria mission, the giant robot Granga, takes you off the rails and into a large open arena, where you can also perform U-turns to do a quick about-face.

Steering control is given to the 3DS's circle pad, but you can also tilt the console to get around. The tilt-based control feels suitably responsive--as with other screen-tilting 3DS games, though, this method is best used with the 3D slider all the way down, as the shifting viewing angle takes you out of the sweet spot for seeing the 3D effect.

Wingman (wingtoad) Slippy.
Wingman (wingtoad) Slippy.

3D is at its best on Solar, where the churning, lava-like star surface and huge, arcing solar flares look great with stereoscopic depth. The 3D effect is easy on the eye throughout, though, placing Fox's Arwing in the foreground and the landscape far beyond, with your targeting reticle moving on a layer between the two. The 3DS's touch screen, meanwhile, is used to receive messages. When one of your squadmates (Slippy, Falco, or Peppy) is talking to you, his face appears on the lower screen.

More often than not, they'll be asking you to get some enemy fighters off their tail. You can oblige them with the double lasers or the smart bombs on Fox's Arwing--the former can be used in a charged shot, with a homing lock-on, or in rapid-fire mode. More of the latter can be grabbed midflight with a bit of quick manoeuvring, along with health pickups and the like. The action from the N64 translates well onto the 3DS, with some minor tinkering. To those who played Star Fox 64 the first time around, this will feel agreeably familiar. The generation that came after them, discovering Star Fox maybe for the first time, will seemingly get a worthy translation. To check out the game itself, head to the Nintendo's Unleashed booth at London Film and Comic Con this weekend, and watch out for more coverage on the game soon.

One of my favourite games. Not that it was complex or had a great storyline etc - it was fun to play and an easy pick up and play game. I know it's mostly only cosmetic changes but I think I'm going to pick this up.

Great, all i wanted was an ACTUAL SEQUEL, not the same friggin game over and over again. I liked so much the series... RIP Star Fox Besides the cool attitude and awesome story he was doomed to relive the same game over and over again, thanks to Nintendo lack of imagination and money hungry attittude. Your fans will miss you.

I plan on pre-ordering this for my 3DS, as well as Mario kart later this year, and last but not least for my Xbox360 I'll pre-order Forza 4 and be a happy camper with both of my fav systems of all time, Nintendo/Xbox360 combo FTW! My 3DS is for on the go gaming, and stuff I love from Nintendo like Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon while my Xbox360 is for awsome console titles like Halo Reach, Gears of War, and Fable, plus some awsome Kinect titles are coming out soon as well. Darnit Nintendo and Microsoft! I can't afford it all! I wish I could! But being 26 and in collage means I have only like 100 bucks for gaming stuff a month! Darn you! Well then there are all the cool PC games I need as well! BF3 I got pre-orderd, but I need to get StarCraft 2, and keep an eye out for what Lucas Arts has for PC gamers come next year......... So many games, not enough money!

@ Dpl420 The mere fact that you said "oracle of time" means you are clearly not an owner of these "botched remakes" and you have clearly not seen how good Ocarina of Time is.

@Wormkid_64 I know how you feel about DK64. (dude) I think it's a pretty underrated game, though, and a remake could probably give it a fresher edge. As far as the whole Rareware thing, Nintendo owns Donkey Kong, so they should be able to make DK64 3D with the help of Retro like you suggested. And Star Fox 64... I only played the multiplayer mode back then, so it will be a whole new experience for me on the 3DS too.

How well does tilt control work with the 3D effect? From what I've heard you have to hold the 3DS at the perfect angle for the image to look right.

@ dawnofhero Dude(Dudette?) if DK64 came to the 3DS I'd go mad with excitement! To this day I hum the music from many of it's levels when walking around.I loved that game because it was so darn huge and having 5 characters who each did something different meant there was tons to do.And for its time, those graphics were purdy. Unfortunately I don't think Nintendo has Rare, the company that made that game, anymore. In fact I'd heard it was MS who has them now.Maybe I'm wrong.Or maybe they can have Retro Studios do with DK64 what they did with DKCR.Make a sequel of some kind.DK3DS all the way! BTW I'm super pumped for this Star Fox.I never got to play the original.

This looks rather good. Better start saving. And hopefully they'll re-make Majora's Mask sometime soon. And if they do, PLEASE revamp that save system. That drove me MAD!!!!!

Mario 64 DS, Diddy Kong Racing DS (which wasn't as good as the original IMO), Golden Eye 007 DS (again, the original was WAY better), Ocarina of Time 3D, and now Star Fox 64 3D. I personally think some of these titles served better on the 64, but others like OoT have turned out really well. Now we just need Zelda: MM and DK64 on the 3DS.

This would make me get a 3ds but that system doesn't have enough solid games yet to warrant the money. It's basically as much as a full console now so I think I will wait. Star Fox though looks like a great remake but I think it could look a little more polished. I mine as well just buy the N64 version for a fraction of the price almost, as I will never get rid of my N64.

Tempted to buy an N64 to play this game again (sold my original years back, don't know why). It would be so much cheaper and on a big screen. I've still got the original on the SNES as well, genius.
