Star Ocean: The Divine Force Revealed With First Trailer At PlayStation State Of Play

The trailer for the eighth entry in the Star Ocean franchise reveals action-packed combat and space-traveling adventures.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force was revealed at PlayStation's October State of Play, being one of a dozen or so games to get a trailer during the livestream presentation. The debut trailer focuses on gameplay but revealed a few elements of the story as well.

Developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix, Star Ocean is an action-adventure RPG series that focuses on a choice-driven relationship system that shapes both the way characters interact with one another and how the story ultimately plays out.

Now Playing: Star Ocean: The Divine Force Trailer | Playstation State of Play 2021

As seen in the trailer, The Divine Force tells a sci-fi fantasy story, featuring a roster of different playable characters and side stories--a similar setup to previous entries in the series. However, unlike previous games, it looks like The Divine Force will have a greater emphasis on exploration, giving characters more navigational-based mechanics (like a jetpack) to get around while on foot.

The Divine Force features two intertwining stories and two different protagonists. The first story focuses on a merchant vessel captain that comes from an advanced sci-fi-inspired civilization, while the second explores a princess who comes from a fantasy-inspired underdeveloped planet.

The Divine Force is scheduled to launch for PS5 and PS4 in 2022.

Be hard to tell on a trailer. Star oceans always been kind of a run of the mill jrpg. What sets them apart is the postgame content. Even I&F had really good post game if you could get through the story.

It's coming to Steam, too. Good news for Steam Deck owners and people who enjoy playing JRPG's portably.

The trailer felt more XenoSaga then SO, but either way ... always glad to have another RPG coming to us.-- I do wonder if it will be a PS exclusive or eventually get to PC eventually.

That...is a surprise. Star Ocean seemed dead and buried after I&F bombed and the mobile game took off.

Sparky is glad that we're getting a new Star Ocean game since Sparky was worried about the future of the franchise after SO5 was panned by everyone and SOA (which is generally supposed to be their money maker) got shut down. Good to see that the Star Ocean brand is still going on strong!

@Abomination713: I remember many months ago this year, I had completely forgot I owned I & F. I found it when I was going through my digital library. That's how bad that game is LOL. I also have not finished it. Maybe I should go back and try. I'll probably have to start the game all over from the beginning though. I have no idea who the characters are or where we are anymore. It's literally been years.

@Abomination713: Integrity and Faithlessness was just beyond low budget. And for many folks two things nailed its coffin shut entirely:

1) Constantly getting hung up on the "in world" combat areas.

2) That. Goddamned. Camera. BOBBING. It was so close to your characters that for a great many players it was nausea inducing, and for me was the first game to ever trigger vertigo. And Squeenix just flat out refused to even listen to players and fix the camera even in the slightest.

I really just want SO2 as an "R" release on PC and SO3 on PC, and not under emulation, but as actual releases.

@squishytia: There apparently is a remaster of SO2 on PS4, but they're keeping it in Japan for some stupid reason.
