Star Wars 7's Daisy Ridley Could Play Lara Croft in New Tomb Raider Movie

The Force Awakens actress reportedly among the actresses in discussions to play the British archaeologist.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens actress Daisy Ridley could take over for Angelina Jolie as archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot. That's according to a report from Deadline, which claims the 23-year-old British actress is among those being considered.

No Caption Provided

Discussions between Ridley and producers Warner Bros. and MGM have been held, but Deadline points out that talks are still "very early." Additionally, official negotiations have not yet begun.

No mention was made in the report about any other actresses being considered for the role.

The previous two Tomb Raider films--2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003's Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life--starred Jolie as the iconic British archaeologist. The first movie remains the highest grossing video game adaptation ever in the US, but the disappointing box office for The Cradle of Life, combined with Jolie's reluctance to revisit the character, meant that a third film never materialized.

A release date, or even a projection of a release date, has not been announced for the new Tomb Raider movie--and it doesn't yet have a title, either. The film, like the 2013 Crystal Dynamics game, tells an origin story, which director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) recently discussed.

"I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that's definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well," he said in an interview. "I think we'll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I'm hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise."

Specific story points are being kept under wraps for now.Transformers 5 writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet is signed on to write the screenplay. The project is a collaboration between four companies--GK Films, Warner Bros, MGM, and Square Enix.

Ridley is currently shooting Star Wars: Episode VIII. She is also working on the documentary The Eagle Huntress as an executive producer.

Do you think Ridley is a good choice to play Croft? Let us know in the comments below!

She would probably be a pretty good Lara Croft. She has a resemblance. My personal pick would be relative unknown Alycia Debnam-Carey (of The100 and Fear The Walking Dead fame). She looks exactly like Lara Croft in the 2 new Tomb Raider games:

Alycia Debnam-Carey for Lara Croft

Awww, I was kinda hoping for them to cast the actress that plays Maggie's character on The Walking Dead. She actually looks like Lara in the new games.

Why not? She's a great actress who imo almost single-handedly saved SW VII from being completely mediocre. She would make a great (young) Lara Croft.

I would actually love to see Camilla Luddington...i mean, why not? I'm pretty sure she perfectly matches Lara's body and fitness since she actually did all the motion capturing for the animations in the game (maybe not all the extreme stunts obviously, but that's where cgi and stunt doubles come to help...)

I loved Daisy in The Force Awakens, she is truly beautiful and would do for a amazing Lara. However, what about Lara's boobs? And yes I am serious, Lara's body is one of her most prominent characteristics! In the games, she is always portrayed with a sculptural body and Daisy doesn't have, well... nice boobs.

@rlemonache: This is a minor point, and easily remedied. You don't think Angelina Jolie didn't have her beasts enhanced when she played the role? Probably one of the reasons she didn't want to do a third movie. Acting talent, ability to do stunts, flawless British accent, and having the right look and demeanor to match Lara Croft are most important.

@rlemonache: ...huuuuuuhhh ... is this what TRUMP America has become ? Really? Her tits are not big enough ... really, so she will probably not be qualified for the job? If this role was for a Dolly Parton bio with a nude scene ..... hell not even then, if CG can make a dinosaur then...

Look, if her acting is good then that is all that matters - she can stuff her shirt or NOT! At least they are real, and there is nothing wrong with real.

Alexandra Daddario if she can pull off a decent British accent.

Would be the next best thing to Daddario as Wonder Woman

Alison Carroll. She basically is Lara Croft. She is British, a gymnast, identical build and appearance to Lara. She doesn't even have to try.

@randybumgardner: for classic Lara... Maybe. For the Younger one... NO. Remember, they want to make the Tomb Raider Reboot, the origin, the younger Lara, not the actual.

@randybumgardner: She cannot act, yeah Tomb raider probably does not need an Oscar performance to make it to the screen, but her acting is as shallow and fake as her boobs.

Lyndsy Fonseca, she's already played a badass assassin in Nikita and has the looks to go with it as well.

Kate Beckinsale would obviously be fantastic, but of course she is 42, so she might not want to engage in the sort of physicality she'd done before, though she was amazing in the Underworld movies.

@slickr: I like your suggestion of Lyndsy Fonseca (I wish I would have thought of it). Great out of the box thinking. Great choice based on her awesome work in Nikita. It's this kind of thinking that had me include Tatiana Maslany in my top 12 list. Unfortunately (as much as I like her) I think Kate Beckinsale is too old for the actress they are looking to play Lara in the new movie. I do know that Tatiana can nail a British accent. Lyndsy would have to be capable of the same. But brilliant idea. She would fit somewhere in the top half of my list (especially if she can do the accent).

I think Daisy would be a fine choice. She could be an awesome fit after make-up, costumes, and training (so she becomes a very different character from Rey). But we don't know much of anything at this point. Here are my top 12 for the part.

1. Sophia Cookson (Kingsman)
2. Daisy Ridley (Star Wars 7)
3. Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones, Terminator)
4. Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia, Hansel & Gretel)
5. Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black)
6. Emma Watson (Harry Potter, etc. - could pull it off because she is so good)
7. Anna Popplewell (Narnia Chronicles, Reign)
8. Adelaide Kane (Reign)
9. Michelle Ryan (Bionic Woman, Doctor Who, Covert Affairs)
10. Rebecca Night
11. Gemma-Leah Devereux
12. Lauren Cohan

I don't think Hayley Atwell has the right look and although I love Camilla Luddington's voice acting for the character in video games, she too does not have the right look. My 2 bits.

@Riprock: I think Emilia Clarke would be a good fit. I haven't seen Daisy Ridley in anything except Star Wars & I thought she was pretty average but maybe she has some potential to do better.

@Riprock: Top 12... How long have you been thinking about this, lol. But seriously, good list. I just think Camilla Luddington should have first crack at it. It is hard after seeing and hearing her in the games to imagine anyone else even though someone else may be better.

@holenjd: You're more than welcome to have your own opinion. I just think that Camilla Luddington was picked especially to be a voice actor for the video games. Her appearance was not a factor - didn't matter for a video game. And I do not think voice acting is interchangeable with screen acting. In fact I will make two points in this regard about Camilla: [1] She looks nothing like the animated character she voices in the video games, and [2] if you look her up on IMDB you will see she has rather sharp facial features and doesn't have the right look for Lara Croft. This does not mean she wasn't excellent in the video games (because she has been) and it doesn't mean she isn't also a good screen actress or isn't good looking. No. It means she isn't the best fit for Lara Croft "on screen" in a "movie", and I want to see a movie about the Tomb Raider who is cast with the best possible actress who is also the best match for Lara's look and demeanor. To me this rules out Camilla (and you're free to disagree). Regardless. I wish her every success.

And yes, I did a bit of research on young British actresses, trying to find those who would be a pretty good match for Lara's looks. I wanted to provide some substance to this discussion than just a simple opinion. Hopefully it opens doors to possibilities and more of a conversation then a mere posting of one liners.

I 2nd the nomination for Camilla Luddington to play the role in the movies as well.

Although we're apparently getting her origin story again, which is unnecessary, especially if they change it again.

Sounds excellent. I always thought that discount Keira Knightley would be perfect for flashback 12-year-old pre-pubescent Lara Croft. Now I wonder who they'll get to play adult Lara.

Angelina Jolie was perfect casting for the previous Lara Croft look and was a great acting talent, it was a shame the movies were fairly mediocre. For the new generation the first person that sprang to mind was Gemma Arterton. She has the look, the err polygon count and she has the British accent and she has shown some good acting prowess. Would be fine with Daisy Ridley, though all the way through Star Wars I kept thinking how she smiles/grits her teeth exactly like Keira Knightley, it someone told me they were sisters I would have totally believed them.

@Cloister56: I personally found Angelina Jolie casting as Lara Croft quite good myself as she has that roughness/tomboyish look as well as having the body type. But mention that here at the comment section and everyone eats you alive (probably because she isn't British).

Camilla Luddington *IS* Lara Croft now.

...and there's no reason NOT to cast her: She's got solid acting chops, she's gorgeous (since raw sex appeal is absolutely part of the TR brand), and she knows the current evolution of the role better than anyone else. Besides, they already use stunt doubles & CGI for intense action sequences -- there's no difference between Daisy and Camilla in that sense (they're both tiny people).

It makes absolutely no sense for the brand owners to allow fragmentation of the fan base they worked HARD to rebuild by changing out the lead actress again.

Seriously the main objection to daisy is the size of her chest.... Wtf. God no wonder gamers have a bad rep. Seriously grow up you lot and maybe a woman may even show you her chest without you paying for it one day. To all the ladies, my apologies were not all like that.

@Bjjallday: Angelina Jolie wore a water bra for the Tomb Raider film so it's hardly even a physical requirement.

I think they should CG in some triangular boobs to keep the 1996 fans happy.
