Star Wars Battlefront 2 Features Three Times As Much Content As The First Game

EA's latest financials don't remark on the performance of Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Update: During EA's post-earnings conference call, CEO Andrew Wilson announced a delay for BioWare's new IP and also outlined some of what to look for through fiscal year 19 (April 2018 - March 2019) and further into the future.

"Through FY19 and beyond, our portfolio will continue to grow," Wilson said. "There will be more new experiences for our Battlefield fans, our Star Wars action-adventure IP from Visceral will make its debut, and farther out, we'll have a new Star Wars title from our partners at Respawn. We continue to invest deeply in new IP, including the new game from BioWare and another project from our Motive studio."

Now Playing: Battlefield 1 - They Shall Not Pass DLC Livestream

It's unclear at this point if the reference to Battlefield experiences indicates new games or merely continued support for Battlefield 1. There's no word on what Motive's game will be, though Portal and Left 4 Dead designer Kim Swift recently joined the studio.

Additionally, EA shared that the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront 2 features three times as much content as its predecessor did at launch. Wilson reiterated that EA took feedback to the previous game seriously, hence the addition of more content and a single-player campaign (being built by Motive). CFO Blake Jorgensen also noted that EA hopes to ship more copies than the 14 million that the first Battlefront did in its debut year. EA believes the game will appeal to Battlefield fans in addition to Battlefront and general Star Wars fans.

The original story follows.

Electronic Arts today released its earnings report for the quarter that ended on March 31, which also marked the close of its financial year.

According to the company, it was the No. 1 publisher on PS4 and Xbox One in the West from April 2016 through March 2017. It also boasted that Battlefield 1 saw 19 million players between its launch in October and the end of March. This is "a 50% increase over Battlefield 4 in the comparable period."

Other highlights included FIFA 17 seeing more than 21 million players, though keep in mind this and the Battlefield 1 figure aren't indicative of actual sales numbers. FIFA Ultimate Team players were up 13% year-over-year, while The Sims 4 saw an increase in monthly active users of 33%. Amazingly, EA says the average time spent playing Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes in Q4 was a whopping 162 minutes per day, which is a new record for the game.

There was no talk of Mass Effect: Andromeda's sales performance, which didn't release until the tail end of the quarter and financial year.

Following an announcement earlier today about the new iteration of Need for Speed, the company's upcoming release slate pegs the game as coming in Q3--the period spanning October through December. EA Sports UFC 3, meanwhile, arrives in Q4 (January - March 2018).

Following an industry-wide trend, digital sales were on the rise. Net revenue from packaged goods were down for the third consecutive year, while digital was up once again. Digital net sales reached $3.034 billion for the full year, which equates to 61% of total net sales. That's an increase of 20% over the prior year. Digital net sales increased most dramatically in terms of full game downloads (up 43% year-over-year) and live services, which comprise DLC, subscriptions, and other categories (up 31%).

EA will host a conference call with investors and analysts later this afternoon to discuss these results. We'll report back with anything interesting it has to share.

I seriously hope we will be able to play the maps in an offline Instant Action type of mode. I want to be able to play the Clone Wars content offline against bots.

61% digital sales is massive and shows that charts that don't include them are pointless.

3 times as much content? That wouldn't be hard to do since they only released half of a game the first time around. Lol

What an odd claim.

There was no single player campaign in the first EA Battlefront so just by adding one youre going to have a bunch more content. Otherwise, im not sure what they are trying to say.

If they were going to have more MP maps, they would probably just say that.....or more weapons, skins, etc. Using the phrase "3 times as much content" is vague, and probably purposely so.

The game is going to sell a zillion copies, whats with the attempts to impress with the unquantifiable?

EA and DICE: We wanted to give you that awesome Battlefront experience, but we decided not to follow the blueprint of the old games because we would rather suck the money right from your wallet piece by piece.

I bought Battlefront for a much cheaper price because that is all the game is worth.

EA and DICE: We are coming out with the second game that will have more content because we might actually care more this time instead of sucking money from consumers. But we are still pretty much greedy bastards, This new Battlefront will feel like the old games though. We promise!

So what they mean is: We heard that players were unhappy with the 20 minutes of content we put into the 1st game so we are going to make a new game for people to buy with an hour of content in it*

*Extra half of the game available for purchase via online store.

@icelandichossi: After Battlefront 2, then we will add more content. Players will actually be able to have their pilot get into the spaceship, and it will not just be a cut scene.

@metallinatus: Actually, there were 12 maps, 9 modes, 6 playable characters and more. So, three times as much as content implies=36 maps, 27 modes, 18 playable characters, campaign and more. So, based on calculation, there is no zero.

That is the worst thing to recognize. So developers are saying they did ask too much money for the first one, as they are now selling another game with 3 times more content for the same price.

I would feel I have been ripped off if I had bought the first game.

All of this sounds overly confusing and bloated.

Why can't they just say: X game sold Y amount of copies. Z game sold lower/higher than expected.

Or even: Mass Effect sold like crap.

At least that kind of jargon would be clear. Because after reading the entire article I STILL don't know how anything performed... :/

@R4gn4r0k: They said that Battlefront has sold 14 million copies. They said they expect Battlefront 2 to exceed that, which is plausible given that it will have more content including a single player campaign. as for ME:Andromeda, given its time of release is not included. What it doesn't say is it will be included in the next Earning report (next quarter I presume). By then they will have solid numbers. They are talking players because players by battlepacks. Players even if they don't have the game a good percentage of them will buy the game after playing it. Its also good PR speak. Percentages also used to given the listener a basis for comparison without getting too much into the details. This is standard financial earnings talk for any given company. I know I'm an accountant and CPA(just saying that so you understand where I'm coming from).Earnings talk is part PR and part informative. They have to be very careful in what they say because analysts love to read /interpret what CEOs say for any hint on what is going to happen with the company for stock buying and selling. Also CEOs can get sued for being accused of misleading investors, so they are very cautious of what they say and how they say it.

@spartanx169x: "hey said they expect Battlefront 2 to exceed that, which is plausible given that it will have more content including a single player campaign."

True but on the other hand many people got burned on buying SW Battlefront and its expensive season pass. Those people will not buy a second one.

"Earnings talk is part PR and part informative. Thanks for the info. I get where you are coming from, but here is my opinion from an outside look:

All this "PR" sounds a bit like shining a positive light on everything.

BF1 had 19 million players, but that sounds almost exactly the same as BF1 sold 19 million copies, but it's not exactly the same. I'd personally like some more conclusive numbers.

With all this PR, it's not like they are gonna say: "Oh this game underperformed", it's like everything is all sunshine and rainbows, and KNOWING the industry, you just know that that ain't true.

@R4gn4r0k: I am somewhat surprised that Titanfall 2 was not mentioned at all. I'm also surprised that nobody(the media) asked about it. The media often asks questions in the earnings calls just to keep the CEOs on their toes. I do agree that they often paint a more rosy picture than it might be. I also agree about people potentially not buying Battlefront 2 for being burned by it. On a personal note I avoided Battlefront because the beta was lacking and subsequently it became public knowledge it was lacking in content. I personnally don't want to play the same maps/stories that have been done and seen in the SW universe. I want to see new stuff. It appears that Battlefront 2 has potential, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

@spartanx169x: Yeah If I were the media I'd be waaaaay more critical :P

And ask about stuff like Titanfall for sure !

I'm kinda like you in a way: was also turned down a bit by the beta and the subsequent slamming from the press because of lack of content (plus the game dared asked you to pay on top of that for a season pass). Free updates could've gone over way better.

I'm willing to give the new battlefront the benefit of the doubt :)

I don't understand how one can hate Ubisoft more than EA, EA is the company that imposed microtransactions, the company that imposed always on, the company that supported the 3rd party exclusives like noone else.

Titanfall for example was the first game that was always on, had full premium price yet had no so, no story and was exclusive to one console. The bribed GS and co to promote it and the new nfs always on appeared

, Starwars alwayson, no story and even the battlefield has less story than ever. And now they have massacrated their best series, mass effect, I really don't understand what's wrong with you ppl, how can you hate Capcom and Ubisoft more?

@croxus: TitanFall had to be always on because it is strickly Multiplayer and the XB1 is incapable of doing local LANs like the first xbox. If you want to be pissed. Look at Destiny, Destiny (controlled by Activision) is always on and does not have to be You should be able to do all the story missions and patrols offline if you wanted to. Destiny is by far one of the worst offenders of this, yet, people love it and give no thought about it.

@croxus: Capcom doesn't produce many games, sits on all their IP.

Every Ubisoft game plays the exact same, whether its a racing game, AC, warch dogs, a tactical shooter, far cry, the division. They all play like a Ubisoft game (in a bad way)

@R4gn4r0k: I'm generally one that doesn't give Ubi the benefit of the doubt, but there are VAST differences between - say - Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, The Division, and Splinter Cell.

I'll totally agree that Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed play like slightly altered reskins for the most part, but many of their franchises stand apart from one another - for better or worse. Their issue, at least in my opinion, is when they focus on open worlds - they can create some awesome worlds, but instead of putting interesting content in them, they give you two dozen exploration spots (like AC, Far Cry, and Watch Dogs towers) and a hundred pointless collectibles that only serve to unlock an achievement.

Other than some more QA time to squash bugs, their lack of engaging content for open world is their main issue.

@SkytheWiz1: Note: I did not mention Splinter Cell, I really like that series and it plays vastly different from anything else.

But how long has it been since the last splinter cell? The series doesn't seem very much alive at this point.

I used to be a big fan of Ubisoft but they threw all their series into a blender and what came out was this mush of samey missions and your actions not really having much affect on the world.

I really like the worlds they craft I mean I really do like exploring those, but what does it all matter when everything you do in it is boring ?

Far Cry = Ghost Recon Wildlands = clear outposts of bad guys

AC = Watch Dogs = The Crew = unlock towers to get access to more stuff in the world

Far Cry is basically the exact same boring missions whether it's set in modern day or in the cavemen days

I was playing the Division open weekend this past weekend. The game was so terrible... Again Ubisoft managed to make this really beautiful world but fill it with the most boring of gameplay and story.

@biggamerdude: Capcom put themselves in this position:

SFV : released as half a game for full price + DLC. Did not go over well

Dead Rising 4: Released 3 years after Dead Rising 3, feels more like an expansion than a true sequel. Yet is sold for full price + season pass. Did not go over well

Resident Evil 7: I kinda saw that as Capcom following the horror trends of indie games. But it did turn out a great game, did go over really well

Devil May Cry 5 is coming ??? Woooooot,nice !

DR4: It definitely feels like a sequel to me i dunno. I didn't like the story much, but the actual gameplay was chaotic and fun.

RE7: Agreed, it was surprisingly really good, and redeemed the franchise for me

Of course digital is getting popular, did you see those prices!? Physical games are just cases and discs now, no longer a mini artbook (also formerly known as manuals, hey, some of them did have awesome artwork back then!) accompany them!

I hope the new NfS is offline. Screw that Need for Speed Online (2k15). The original NfS Online died, and they decided to recreate it? Nuh-uh. I want my offline street racing bruh. Like I want my Star Wars wars offline. With online as an option. Learn that EA.
