Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Will Use Dedicated Servers And More Info Confirmed

More details revealed.

Following Star Wars: Battlefront II's official announcement last week, even more details about the anticipated sci-fi shooter have now come to light from developer tweets (via GamesRadar).

First, associate design director Dennis Brannvall confirmed on Twitter that, like the 2015 game, Battlefront II will make use of dedicated servers for multiplayer. He also said that the new class system for Battlefront II will not offer the same level of "freedom" as the Star Card system in the 2015 title. However, Brannvall stressed that, "You can definitely customize your trooper class quite drastically to suit your playstyle."

Additionally, he touched on the reloading system for Battlefront II. Without giving away specifics, he said it will be a combination of cooldown and reloading, "kind of [sic]."

"We're doing some improvements and we'll have more details later," he said.

We also learn from game designer Christian Johannesen that Battlefront II's $80 Elite Trooper Deluxe Edition content--at least some of it--can be unlocked through normal gameplay. As announced previously, some of this content includes "upgraded" abilities for every Trooper class: Officer, Assault, Heavy, and Specialist.

Battlefront II launches on November 17 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For more on the game, check out all of GameSpot's written and video content here.

Does this mean faster loading? The load times for the last game suck.

I got burnt with BF1 and the substandard game play for a triple-A title, so I'll sit back and wait for the reviews on this one..

Knowing they're using dedicated servers brings me 1 step closer to buying it eventually. For Honor didn't use em and you could tell.

These are not dedicated servers, this is the new marketing lie term.

A dedicated server is a server YOU run on YOUR machine, and can install mods onto and manage any way you like.

A dedicated server is not one run by a company that players have no control over.

@Thanatos2k: You have it the wrong way around.

A dedicated server is a server that is "dedicated" to serve-ing data. Any server that has a sole job to serve data and nothing else is a "dedicated server".

You'll find a non-dedicated server is a server you run on your machine. This is known as a Peer-to-Peer server because the peers in the network connect to a single peer in the same network for data. A Peer is always a player, usually chosen if their connection is Wired.

Where did you get your definition from?

@gtxplayer:What are you talking about. Running a server on your own machine is DEDICATING that machine as a server to handle connections from multiple people. This is how the definition has been for two decades since Counterstrike. The other way was P2P hosting that the game would assign to one of the participants as the host upon which the game would fall apart if that one person left.

A dedicated server solved those issues.

@Thanatos2k: Nooooooooope.

Running a server on your own machine does not dedicate your machine as a server unless you specifically run nothing but server software such as Apache/Win Server 2016 or whatever tickles your fancy.

No, numb nuts, Counter-Strike uses P2P AND Dedicated Servers where the latter are VAC enabled. It has both types of servers.

The definition of dedicated server was coined well before Counter-strike, don't know why you think counterstrike coined the term. Not even close.

No, you have no idea what you are talking about. P2P hosting is one player hosting as a server and a player at the same time, where all players refer to that player for data. That is why in early games, you could easily host "hacked" lobbies such as CoD modded lobbies or similar, because the server software was effectively in the modders hands. Hosting only fell apart if the Host left the lobby, because there is then no provider of data needed to run on all other clients. A new host would then be picked, and they would be the new server hoster. The host always had an advantage over peers because they carried out calculations, themselves before passing it to other peers hence the term "Host advantage".

A dedicated server is not a server that runs a public-domain OS like Windows X. Server software is the only main software used in dedicated servers, and dedicated servers are not consoles or off-the-shelf PC's. A console or PC can be a server, but it can't be a Dedicated server.

This is basic knowledge and many sources including this one will tell you, you're wrong!

Edit: I can spam you with countless resources explaining how wrong you are if you favour that.

@gtxplayer: "Running a server on your own machine does not dedicate your machine as a server"

That's exactly what it means, good lord.

"No, numb nuts, Counter-Strike uses P2P AND Dedicated Servers where the latter are VAC enabled"

I know. That's when they became popularized, as was the terminology.

"P2P hosting is one player hosting as a server and a player at the same time, where all players refer to that player for data."

I KNOW. That's why a *dedicated server* is a machine with a dedicated process SERVING clients. The key being the process running the server is separate, not part of the game client itself as P2P hosting is (as well as matchmaking being handled by the game client). That's what makes it a dedicated process! The key to all of this is that you, the user, controlled that process - you could manage your dedicated server, mod it as you will, and handle authorization.

I'm starting to think you knew the definition, and your insult peppered replies indicate you're just arguing for the sake of it.

@Thanatos2k: What the heck are you talking about? A "dedicated server" is a server that is dedicated to hosting the game/matches and connect the clients (without running the game). And it can technically even be one that is spun up and hosted on a client's PC. However, for gaming it means that they'll have their own servers dedicated to hosting the games instead of P2P.

You're thinking about custom servers.

@m4a5: You're using that as the technical definition rather than the colloquial definition PC gamers have used for decades.

It would be like saying any game where you play a role is an RPG. It ignores the definition that real people use. Companies offering crappy multiplayer offerings like this are counting on you being tricked by such definitions and accepting inferior servers and being unable to run your own.

It appears it's too late now, young people who don't know any better are using the definition incorrectly now.

BF1 was disappointing with how little there was in it, but hopefully BF2 will have more to it. They say it will anyway.

Why do people keep asking if every Battlefield or Battlefront game will have dedicated servers? They have to, you can't have modes with 40 players and vehicles running around using P2P networking.

No one will answer me on twitter about if the vehicles will still be icons. That is a deal breaker in itself. They keep saying "we are getting a ton of question we are not allowed to answer"... how is that a question they cannot answer? Is that the big surprise from 1 to 2? NO vehicle icons?

@cannotfindausername: Same here. I've only played with my nephew on his Xbox One, but that is really annoying. I'm not sure how it is online, but I also can't stand not being able to pick my spawn point.

@cannotfindausername: i think you will spawn in on them from the respawn screen. So probably not jumping into them from running around but not pickups either. Not a bad trade IMO.

@cannotfindausername: I think there's a BF2 article on Eurogamer that answers that, says they are ditching the blue vehicle icons for something else, they mentioned a resource system. Haven't had a chance to read the article myself, was just discussing it with some one who had.

Seems good news so far, really hoping this game doesnt suck and they reveal prequel gameplay at E3, because mysteriously we see original and sequel trilogy settings in the trailer but no clone troopers or planets like kamino, geonosis, etc.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 had six class types. Officer, sounds like the commander based classes from Star wars Battlefront 2. (Imperial Officer) (Clone Commander) Assault sounds like a mix of the soldier class/ heavy class. Specialist sounds like a combination of an Imperial Scout Trooper with a Dark Trooper.

Heavy is the only one that seems to be coming from the actual Battlefront 2. For the sake of EA's Star Wars Battlefront Franchise, I can't say that I am hyped for the game. It's going to take actual gameplay to get me to buy Star Wars Battlefront 2. The first game I did get but got like three or four months after release when it had all ready sold 12 million copies. Safe to say, it wasn't worth the $40.00 I spent on it.

That and I am really salty about there being no more Dark Troopers. So I got to ask EA are you going to take out the Bantha Spies and even the Magna Guards as well? you might as well stop right now. Unless the Clone Wars is only the first phase. As in Battle of Geonosis then at least I can understand that.

The Clone Wars on it's own deserves it's own game to be honest.
