Star Wars Episode 7 Closing in on $2 Billion at Worldwide Box Office
Disney sci-fi blocksuster's new global box office total now stands at $1.983 billion, just $17 million shy of $2 billion.
The weekend numbers are in, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is closing in on another milestone. The sci-fi blockbuster pulled in $10.8 million in the US this weekend and another $12.6 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $1.983 billion; it needs just $17 million more to pass $2 billion.
Variety, which supplied the numbers, reports that The Force Awakens could pass $2 billion by the end of the week.
The Force Awakens is the biggest box office smash of all time domestically, but still trails Avatar ($2.78 billion) and Titanic ($2.19 billion) at the worldwide box office.
The Force Awakens was released in December. In addition to its strong box office performance, the film was generally praised by critics.
The next Star Wars movie, Rogue One, comes to theaters this December. The have been rumors that Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin might appear, as well as new Imperial soldiers known as Death Troopers, but nothing has to date been confirmed.
