Star Wars Episode 7 Will Pass $2 Billion Worldwide This Weekend, Disney Says

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still breaking records. Disney said Friday that the sci-fi blockbuster should pass $900 million at the US box office sometime today, February 5, with the movie pegged to reach $2 billion at the global box office by tomorrow.

The seventh installment in the iconic Star Wars series will become the only movie in history to reach $900 million domestically. If it passes $2 billion worldwide as predicted, it will become the third movie in history to do so, following James Cameron movies Titanic ($2.19 billion) and Avatar ($2.78).

As of February 4, The Force Awakens stood at $899.1 million domestically and $1.99 billion globally. Today, February 5, marks the 50th day that the film has officially been in theaters.

"This is a historic moment for Star Wars, for Lucasfilm, and for Disney, and all of us here are extremely gratified to be a part of this journey with fans around the world who have made Star Wars: The Force Awakens such an extraordinary success," Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement.

"The film's achievements are truly astounding, and it's our great honor to relaunch this cinematic galaxy not only for all the devoted decades-long fans but for a new generation who will keep the Star Wars legacy alive for many years to come."

The Force Awakens was the first movie in the series released since Disney's acquired the franchise from George Lucas in 2012. It won't be the last, as Rogue One opens this December, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII a year later in 2017. A film focused on a young Han Solo will open in 2018, with Star Wars: Episode IX scheduled to come to theaters in 2019.

Outside of film, Electronic Arts is making more Star Wars games including possibly additional Battlefront titles and a rumored open-world game set in the beloved sci-fi universe.
