Star Wars Han Solo Movie Is "Unexpected" and Breaks Rules, Cinematographer Says

Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who made 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, are taking on the young Han Solo Star Wars film next. Moving from a Jonah Hill/Channing Tatum comedy and a film about talking plastic toys to Star Wars might have some people scratching their heads. But you shouldn't assume anything, cinematographer Bradford Young told Collider in a new interview.

"Don't put those guys in a box because they have a vision; they know exactly what they want," he said. "They have no hidden agenda, but they do have an agenda; they have a way of seeing that's very special, and their collaboration is genuinely unique. I respect their work, I respect them as filmmakers, but I wasn't quite sure if there would be a good marriage between what I' trying to pursue and the work that I'm doing and what they're doing, but they helped make that real[ly] clear to me early on by expressing some real[ly] interesting story [and] photographic ideas that really resonated with me."

21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie were generally well-received, the latter especially so. What could have been (and basically still is) a 90-minute toy advertisement felt like something a lot more than that. You can expect Lord and Miller to mix things up with the Han Solo movie, too, Young said.

"These cats are subversive, don't let it fool you (laughs)," Young said. "They are prepared to say exactly what they wanna say and it's complex, it's layered, it's smart, it's visual, it's dramatic, it's funny, it's uneasy, it's unexpected. I'm honored to have them in the list of directors I've worked with, that's for sure."

Lord and Miller are bringing their "very unique" vision and perspective to the story, Young went on to say, adding that there hasn't been any pushback from Lucasfilm as of yet.

"It's gonna feel like a Star Wars film, but we're definitely gonna break some rules, and we're encouraged to do that," Young said. "Visually, narratively, that's a good mandate. They really are about, from what I've seen so far, supporting up-and-coming artists, artists who have a strong vision and voice and perspective, and they really wanna permeate the films with those kinds of voices."

Young may not be a household name, but there is a chance you've seen his work. He was the cinematographer on crime drama Ain't Them Bodies Saints, the MLK movie Selma, and A Most Violent Year. He also worked alongside acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins on Sicario.

Alden Ehrenreich will play Solo in the movie, while Donald Glover will portray Lando Calrissian. According to a recent report, the film may show how the smuggler won the Millennium Falcon from Calrissian. Additionally, Chewbacca is also set to make an appearance in the movie, which is set to arrive in theaters on May 25, 2018.

The next Star Wars movie is December's spinoff, Rogue One.
