Star Wars Solo Director Comments On Its Commercial Failure

Ron Howard feels bad.

It's highly unusual for a Star Wars movie to be anything less than a huge box office success, but the recent spin-off Solo: A Star Wars Story has proved to be a financial disappointment. The movie has made $312 million worldwide to date, and there are reports that it might ultimately lose money for Disney. Now director Ron Howard has commented on the movie's commercial failure.

Howard was responding to a fan who had tweeted about reports that some Star Wars viewers were boycotting Solo because of their displeasure with The Last Jedi, which was released in December. While Howard did not address this directly, he did lament that some audiences wouldn't see the movie on the big screen.

Now Playing: Solo: A Star Wars Story Review - A Well-Crafted Side Story

"I'm proud of [Solo] and the cast and crew worked hard to give fans a fun new addition," he wrote. "As a director I feel badly when people who I believe (and exit polls show) will very likely enjoy a movie... don't see it on a big screen with great sound."

There have been numerous theories behind Solo underperforming at the box office. As well as the Last Jedi-related fan boycott, there has been speculation that it was released too close to both The Last Jedi and superhero smashes Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War. In addition, it has been suggested it was an issue of marketing, with the first trailer appearing too late to build enough excitement for the film, especially since the relatively unknown Alden Ehrenreich was taking over as Han Solo.

But despite Solo's financial disappointment, Disney is still moving forward on more Star Wars movies. The next one is Episode IX in December 2019, and the studio is also reportedly planning standalone films for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lando Calrissian, and Boba Fett. Just recently, we learned that Logan director James Mangold may be directing the Boba Fett movie. Additionally, Disney hired the creators of Game of Thrones for a new Star Wars film series, while The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is making his own new trilogy of films after JJ Abrams' Episode IX next year.

If they ever do another starwars do a Revan Saga hell steal content from SWTOR those writers do better than the movie did get people who know their Starwars history and someone who's job is it to say hey that makes no sense you need to re-write that that is a flamming sack of HOT GABAGE !!!! (spelled just like that) so Starwars can be back on top and Disney for the love of GOD stop hiring SJW to write scripts SJW are ruing my childhood if you cant write a good female role then dont Cinderella was more of a bad ass the Ray. Ray is boring like watching the Twilight series in slowmotion. Sam Reimi could write a better female role than half the Marvel and Starwars writers on the toliet with the shits eating a chimichunga on a tuesday during a vegan fest.

Solo is really good.

But Disney planning sooooo many Star Wars movies (spin offs, new trilogies, spin offs for every **** character) has me really worried.

The article mentions IX, i do hope they understand that calling your fan base sexist and racist simply because a small group of people gave an actress a hard time is going to have very serious consiquences. If they thought Solo was a failure, IX is going to make the Justice League look like one of the most successful movies ever made.... trust me Episode IX is going to flop hard.

I'll see it later on, but I didn't feel the need to see a Solo origin movie in the theatre.

Literally not Howard's fault. The movie was actually great for what it was. The fault lies mainly with Disney, for shitty marketing and the general bad taste still left in everyone's mouths from Episode 8.

Solo was actually a good movie. I went in expecting it to be crap. It wasn't.

But Star Wars fatigue is obviously a real thing and Disney isn't helping by announcing, "oh, let's do a Lando film. A Boba film. A C3PO film (okay that one I made up but I wouldn't put it past them at this point)."

Disney has failed the most important aspects of story telling: good plot, good script and character development. People have to like the characters, especially the hero. Actors can only do so much. I don't blame the actors at all. All we get now is special effects. Disney has failed the two most important business practices on how to make money. Give customers what they want and make a customer feel like you care about them. Their attitude towards fans who dont like their movies has been an appalling PR exercise. Really disgraceful. Calling them every name under the sun. This company deserves to be punished by poor sales.

Quality over quantity, respect to fans and the lore over shock and awe PR and agenda, Disney needs to keep this in mind if they want to keep Star Wars alive.

These movies are trash...they reek of Disney feminism and simply put are as unoriginal as can be. Could the meeting with Snoke be any more derivative minus having an actual cool looking/sounding sith lord versus this weird reptile thing? Don't even get me started on the emo dude that plays off as some kind of "true sith" LOL....let's be honest the design of Darth Maul blows away anything this series has currently in it.

The prequels, despite their many faults, were enjoyable to (re-)watch. They had at least some interesting characters and battles in them, expanded the lore in a meaningful way and the story differed enough from the original trilogy that it could stand on its own.

I really can't say the same for every Star Wars movie that Disney released so far. I can almost say for a fact that ALL OF THEM suffer from having uninteresting or annoying (main) characters. The Last Jedi was terrible, but it followed the already-weak premise and foundation set in The Force Awakens.

I already told you. NO LUCAS = NO STAR WARS.

It's really that simple. I don't want to see a Star Wars movie without the involvement of George Lucas and I stand by that fact. Star Wars was created by George Lucas, it is HIS STORY, HIS MOVIES. I only listen to Lucas's vision for Star Wars and that was COMPLETE in 2005 with Revenge of the Sith.

@suprsolider: 100% agree. Unless another creative scifi genius like Lucas or Hubbard come along, there is no hope for this stories continuation. Hubbard may have been a maniac and a criminal, but he did write good scifi. The only problem is some people mistook his fiction and criminal schemes (ie making money) for reality.

@suprsolider: can't agree with that statement since lucas himself played a crucial role in destroying the prequels. i would never trust him to plan a star wars movie again and apparently he understands this as well.

@kevo44: pretty much. i trust abrams with star wars -- he respected the lore with ep vii and managed to make a decent reboot of the franchise -- but johnson hasn't got a clue. he is letting his ego get in the way. he is trying to make star wars his own creation and taking liberties with it every chance he can get. it will not end well.

@Xristophoros: @kevo44 seriously. I don't know how Rian Johnson's vision was even given the greenlight, because he went in there with a wrecking ball and fucked up everything. I'm glad JJ Abrams is back in the driver's seat, but it's going to be a salvage job. At least Abrams respects the material and doesn't make up stupid shit.

@Xristophoros: (2014) Disney is buying Star Wars. That's great they do such a great job with Marvel.

(2018) I was wrong. Read the last paragraph again, it seems Disney is throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. No planning, no forethought, the exact opposite of Marvel.

@kevo44:

The thing is, its not really Disney in either case. Marvel Pictures and Lucasfilm operate on their own. Kevin Feige and Kathleen Kennedy only answer to Bob Iger. And those first two names are all the difference. Feige created a big plan when he was put in charge of Marvel Pictures. He keeps his plans in mind across all of the movies. Kennedy, I am not entirely sure if she knows what she wants or if she had any real plan in place beyond "make a bunch of movies".

@derangel: You're right. Disney paid a billion dollars for Star Wars and wanted to cash in immediately. JJ (for better or worse) set the table with Force Awakens and Disney could have rolled with it adding to the universe while respecting the source material and still having their subtle social messages. Episodes 1 - 6 had a Lucas continuity that felt real. These movies just feel disconnected from the first 6.

Their isn't one big issue with Star Wars right now. It's a million small issues paper-cutting the franchise to death.

you can blame disney for the travesty that was ep viii. you cannot expect the fanbase to easily bounce back from that trash and willingly spend its hard earned money on a solo movie that not only looked average, but was tarnished even before it released due to all the production troubles it went through. i haven't even mentioned the level of fatigue people are feeling with star wars at the present time which is another factor as to why solo bombed. if disney was foolish enough to think it could churn out a new sw movie every single year and expect them to smash box office records each and every time, it thought wrong. you cannot alienate your audience and be forgiven so easily. hopefully a lesson was learned here but that would be giving disney too much credit.

I can tell you the entire problem in 1 word. Annual. Just like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty. They release annually. We all know a new one is coming every year. That wow factor is gone. No one gets nearly as excited as say, a new Grand Theft Auto. GTAV has been out for nearly 5 years and still raking in loads of cash. And can you imagine the reception and the hype GTAVI will bring? After so many years?! That is how Star Wars should be. Spread them out, don't spread them thin. There's no sense in destroying and rushing an incredible universe full of stories into theaters. Treat them with some respect. Take your time.

@jayskoon93: Agreed, the reason why Episode 7 had SO MUCH hype was because it was over a decade since we had another Star Wars film.

Now they release annualy and it's just nothing special anymore.

@jayskoon93: Marvel movies are still doing great. It's simple Episode 8 was horrible and that's followed by episode 7 already being subpar. They lost a lot of the fan base at that point. I've watched all the movies since Disney took over day 1. I skipped this one and I'm done with Star Wars in the theaters. I'll wait until I can watch these at home.

@method115: The way I wrote that sent the wrong message. I love Marvel and Stan Lee's creations. Hell, after I got his signed autograph, I actually sat down and spoke with him at DragonCon in Atlanta many years ago and he really is a fantastic guy who has a real passion for his work. The super fast release of his movies is a joke more so than the films themselves. I don't think his works should be so common and taken for granted. They should be special and released with care, for lack of a better word. I think the release after release after release after release simply dulls the experience.

Other than the last jedi (which killed my star wars love & nostalgia), the spin off brings nothing really new. Solo and rouge one (its a good movie btw) didnt really bring much cause in the end whatever these spin off does, we already know what will happen in episode 4.

@method115: yeah rogue one was a great movie but still the movie was a bit pointless personally. We know or not know the weakness to the death star, episode 4 happened. Same with Solo, whatever happened with Han doesnt matter cause we know whats he will be like in episode 4.

@freddquadros: You should NEVER be loyal to any company or product. Loyalty to consumer products is insanely stupid and makes you a bad consumer. Every company that wants your money should earn it and if you do not like the product they are selling you should not give them money for it. Loyalty is complete bullshit.

@derangel: You misunderstood what I said. How do you will like or dislike a product without consuming it? Without tasting? How will you form an opinion on a movie, game, without see it, play it? How? Someone loyal will AT LEAST GIVE A CHANCE. After that, you form an judgement. You can dislike it and never see it again, but a fan must see 1st. That kind of loyalty I am claiming here, not the kind that likes anything. I said that because there where "fans" who did not go to the movies to see the film, not even once. How someone can say "I don't like it" without watching it??

@freddquadros: I still disagree. I knew from the moment they even announced plans for a Han Solo origin story that I was out. An origin for Han does nothing for me. I like the character as he was in the original trilogy, I have never felt the need to know where he came from. Even as a Star Wars fan, and a fan of the character, I simply have zero desire to watch the movie. The horrible trailers did not help either. Being a fan of a movie property does not mean you have to see every single thing with that property's name attached to it. Without watching the movie I can tell you I will not like it because I do not like the premise. I don't need to see the movie to tell me something I already know.

@freddquadros: Don’t you know we aren’t allowed to like The Last Jedi?!! Honestly I don’t feel betrayed at all either, I took my dad to see it and he (after growing up with the originals and falling in love with them) said it was the absolute perfect movie to continue the story and say goodbye to the characters he loved.

@ice12tray: Loved TLJ too. I don't know why people feel so offended in finding that Luke is a person, with virtues and flaws. Or why people must think that a Solo movie is pointless, if we did not know how he won the Falcon, met Chewbacca, we NEVER saw Corellia before, etc. And the movie is quite enjoyable, reminded me of a Indiana Jones movie (in a good way obviously).

Who allowed SW fans to be so whinny and nitpicky?

At this point, I can't help but wonder whether they'd have been better served just letting Lord and Miller finish their version and releasing it as it was. Apparently the movie would still have been profitable if not for the cost of the reshoots.
