Star Wars: The Force Awakens Is Already Breaking Ticket Sale Records

Expectations are high.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn't even out yet and it's already breaking records.

Sources told The Wall Street Journal and The Hollywood Reporter today that ticket pre-sales have so far generated more than $50 million in North America alone. That's more than double the previous record of $25 million, set by 2012's Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises.

THR's sources added that IMAX sales alone accounted for one third of all pre-sale ticketing revenue.

The $50 million figure is likely to balloon even further in the lead-up to The Force Awakens' release in December, as pre-sale tickets have not yet sold out. THR surveyed major online ticketing services and found there are still "plenty of seats" available for opening-weekend showings.

Pre-sales opened on October 19, timed with the release of a new trailer. Demand was so strong that some ticketing sites crashed.

WSJ reports that many in Hollywood are predicting The Force Awakens will topple Jurassic World's $209 million in first-weekend sales to have the biggest opening in film history. But even if it doesn't beat that initial mark, The Force Awakens--which opens December 18--could enjoy a strong performance over its next two weeks. That's because many adults will be off work and children out of school for the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Avatar remains the top-performing movie of all time in terms of box office receipts with $2.79 billion. WSJ explains that The Force Awakens will need to perform well in China and Russia, regions where the Star Wars franchise is not as ingrained in pop culture, if it wants to topple that mark.

The Force Awakens is directed by JJ Abrams and stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill.

I know this is a religion thing but why do people hate on some Sci fi like LUCY for not been "realistic" and then when they hear Dr. Who or Star wars they dont care?

@jerses: It comes down to suspension of disbelief. The tech and mysticism of the Star Wars universe works because of course it does. Ignoring the b.s. explanation of the force Lucas injected into The Phantom Menace, everything about the Star Wars universe is so advanced that we just kind of accept it as a possibility. Like taking an iPhone back in time to the 1800's. It would seem like magic, and they wouldn't understand how any of it worked. It would be beyond them.

On the other hand, Lucy asked us to believe that we only use 10% of our brains, which is an idea that was disproved a long time ago. It wasn't a horrible movie, it just had a big misstep right out of the gate. If they had just reworked how they presented the idea, it would have gone a long way to restoring the suspension of disbelief.

@rogue81: But its scifi!! You can say the same in star wars there is a bunch of dumb science in lightsabers, and how lasers make sound, explosions in space, sounding laser in space or travel at slow speed , or travel in short burst, etc. BUT people dont care for it becuase lightsabers are cool even when we know light doesnt work that way. Why cants LUCY be cool too? I put LUCY as an example of how people accept some sci fi and bash new ones. Also i know that there are "hot fixes" for dumb science in star wars like the LASERS been bolts and even weird explanations on how the lasers in space make sound or even how the lightsabers work.... can we not apply the same concept to other movies? like say. AH! LUCY takes place in another world similar to ours where brain works different.

@jerses:Ok, I know what you mean, I understand where you come from because I didn't hate Lucy, but the movie wasn't nearly good, even if they got the scientific facts right. Star Wars is a sci-fi fantasy space epic, it's full of inconsistency and science salad. Like so many moons and planets have Earth-like atmosphere and air, breatheable by different species, and humanoid "aliens". In Lucy, they base a whole movie on a flawed concept from like 1950, that people only use 10 percent of their brain, and goes one on a very serious and almost condencending tone to show that using more of your brain turns people into arrogant and sarcastic superhumans with the personality of a cardboard robot. I mean, yeah the special effect were kinda nice, it is a Luc Beson movie, but it sucks as a whole. Just like the Star Wars prequels.

@jerses:Never even heard of that before, but after looking it up I can't say as it doesn't seem all that silly imo.

Anyway I am a semi-realistic person, such as if it can pass something off as believable or that the technology is possible. I mean it isn't necessary, but I like things to make some sense in some form. Take for example blasters, I mean we actually don't have plasma based weaponry in real life, but the sci-fi technical explanations are good enough to be believable and are somewhat realistic given it is super heated gas(Star Wars uses Tibana gas for their plasma weaponry). Same with Star Trek, so much made up junk, but it is so technical and explains what is happening in a believable way. As long as something can be passed off as believable whether or not we know something might not be as it is in real life(If it were even possible). Now as for Doctor Who, yea everything in that is a joke, the reason the realism is ignored in it is because the campy nature and silliness to it are why it is watched(At least for me, plus certain times and locations are neat).

Side note not directed at anything you said, but more as to put this out there:

There is no actual sound in space in the movies, I'm sure Lucas was aware, it would just be boring to watch without sound.

@Smosh150: But LUCY was all about kickass , not about how the brain works they dont even even take that serious. The brain stuff in LUCY is what a THE FORCE is to starwars. Its just an instrument to tell a story. What i dont know is how some sci fi is OK and other is not becuase not been science accurred.

@jerses: Fair enough, like I said I haven't seen it and it doesn't look that bad. In sci-fi all that matters is plausibility or for something to sound plausible to me. The only time I take exception is with real life based movies(I mean like present day) and science.

@beastmode: Who the hell cares about reviews? Have you seen the inconsistency between critic and user reviews? Watch a movie and form an opinion for yourself, or you're the one being stupid.

@beastmode: Star Wars is Star War, even if it is terrible and we knew ahead of time, there would still be plenty of people who would see it(Including myself). There is a reason why it is described as a cult film franchise by some. It is just like the Star Trek movies, not all are bad of course(I'm talking pre-2009), but many fans were aware that they weren't that great of Star Trek films and still went to see it. Some like to see more of the universe which is already good, the technology, lifestyle, etc regardless of the plot.
