The plot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a tightly guarded secret. But what we now know is that the story it tells, as well as the overarching narrative for the new trilogy, is not what franchise creator George Lucas originally had in mind.

No Caption Provided

Speaking with GameSpot sister site CBS News, Lucas explained that the Star Wars saga, as he envisioned it, is basically a soap opera. Disney listened to Lucas' ideas, but wanted to go another direction.

"The issue was ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, 'We want to make something for the fans,'" Lucas said. "I said, 'All I wanted to do was tell a story of what happened--it started here and it went there. It's all about generations and the issues of fathers and sons and grandfathers.

"It's a family soap opera," he added. "People don't realize it's actually a soap opera and it's all about family problems--it's not about spaceships. So they decided they didn't want to use those stories; they decided they were going to do their own thing so I decided, 'Fine.'"

"They weren't that keen to have me involved anyway" -- Lucas

The Force Awakens is the first core Star Wars movie that Lucas will have no direct hand in producing. He says Disney wasn't very thrilled about working with Lucas on the movie and the visionary admits that he wouldn't have been of much help, considering his ideas clashed with Disney's.

"But basically, they weren't that keen to have me involved anyway," he said. "But at the same time, I said, 'If I get in there I'm just going to cause trouble, because they're not going to do what I wanted them to do.' And I don't have the control to do that anymore and all I would do is muck everything up.

"So I said, 'OK, I will go my way and I let them go their way.'"

Disney paid $4.05 billion to buy the Star Wars franchise (among other properties) from Lucas in 2012.

He went on to compare his exit from the juggernaut entertainment series to a breakup.

"When you break up with somebody, the first rule is no phone calls," he said. "The second rule, you don't go over to their house and drive by to see what they're doing. The third one is you don't show up at their coffee shop and say you are going to burn it... You just say, 'Nope, gone, history, I'm moving forward.'"

CBS News' full interview with Lucas will air on CBS This Morning in December. The Force Awakens comes to theaters on December 18 with great expectations.

@MoreThot: Are you kidding? It's Lucas universe. He built Star Wars. He didn't exactly turn it into what it is today, but it's still his baby. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he sold it because he wasn't doing it any good, but it was still all his. He controlled the biggest sci-fi franchise of all time. Even at $4 billion, you can't really put a price tag on something like that. With the franchise now reinvigorated, it's probably going to make far more than $4 billion.

@MoreThot: Seriously, i would prefer creating something that would endure generations to come than receiving 4 billions dollar. Hell, i would prefer becoming a famous rockstar and entertain a whole stadium against any amount of money in the world. And i'm broke right now. But i have a feeling that Disney can do a good job as well. So we'll see.

Imo the worst mistake he made was remaking the first trilogy, that turned "Return of the jedi" into a complete joke (I had to stop watching that one during jabbah's castle). The Phantom menace was a children's movie so I cannot really comment on that.

In any case I respect his work. He was honest to himself and made the movies he actually wanted to do. Talking about "making a movie for the fans" in Disney's words I think it is pretty arrogant.

Damn... George Lucas really does sound bitter. I would be too though. Pretty much EVERYONE is ripping him apart right now for what he did to the prequels and are praising J.J. Abrams/Bad Robot/Disney's LucasFilm so much more than ever before, lol! So, I don't blame George... not one bit! I thought the prequels were "okay," but I do recognize that they weren't as good as the original trilogy (I didn't like Jar Jar Binks either, but the character wasn't movie-breaking, geez!). ;) With that said, George Lucas is STILL the "father" of Star Wars. Listen up... we wouldn't even have Star Wars if it weren't for George, so I think we all need to calm down, take a breath and remember what George Lucas has done for us... for our lives!!! George Lucas has indirectly saved lives with his original Star Wars trilogy.... never forget it!

P.S.- It's no wonder that, in this same interview, when asked who his favorite character is, George Lucas responded with "Jar Jar Binks." Lucas is obviously trolling us here and IMO, it's his personal "**** you" to not just the critics, but to EVERYONE who's talking shit about him right now! C'mon guys... you REALLY think that Jar Jar Binks is his favorite character??? Hell no! It's probably Luke or Han, but he obviously wants to say Jar Jar to kinda piss everyone off. I don't blame him... I would too!

Sorry George, you can swim in you Scrooge mcduck vault of $$$ complaining about how Disney is ruining your franchise you sold. Sold means it's not yours.

2nd, you ruined your own vision by making the crap prequels. You took great actors like Natalie Portman and mcgregor and gave them soap opera lines.

Last, I feel like I have already seen the new movie knowing who the director his, and he has a very distinct style. Because all the original actors are playing mentor roles this time around.

Not saying I won't enjoy it, but i I highly doubt the new movies will be better then the originals in any way except money making.

Didn't he make the prequels or viewed them as part of his original vision too? Means this movie will be at least decent

Well George Lucas did sell Star Wars to Disney. What did he think would happen? He has no say in the matter anymore, Plus this is the guy who changed things for the worse in the Remastered versions of the original trilogy. Such as Han Solo not shooting Greedo first. Now George Lucus knows about the feeing when the original vision is changed. Disney now owns Star Wars for better or Worse.

You gotta know that Lucas is boiling over all the attention the new movie is getting, and all of it is on Abrams and not him. He is likely worried if this film will out gross his, and confused as to why Mark, Carrie, and Harrison all came back, especially Harrison after he said he was done with Han Solo.

I dunno, I kind of feel bad for George Lucas. I mean, I'm sure the prequel trilogy was more about merchandising than artistic expression, but having a whole cottage indoustry spring up around talking about how bad something you spent a decade of your life working on can't be any fun.

@davillain-: Except for he sold the franchise. He cant have his cake and eat it too. Either have the passion and integrity for your creation or sell it to someone and let them do whatever they want with what they paid for.

good because ur a sh!ty director just means the movie will be 100 times better that we ever imagined

and yes your writing skill is soap opera level... barely, you got lucky with the first trilogy but that does not make you an artist your just another shamylan, you got lucky then it turns out you are just not that talented

to George and Notch and all the idi-ots that think money makes them special.... you not special you got lucky and let it go to your head, you all garbage put that money to good use or just s-tf-u and walk away

@resident_jisen:

Except it wasn't just Lucas. He gets the limelight because it's his brainchild but a slew of other writers, directors, producers and effects people made Star Wars what it was. The original trilogy was more a result of the creative efforts of others than it was Lucas's. He didn't even direct the best film in the series.

Now the prequel trilogy he had much more control over and infamously refused input from others and we all know how that turned out...

@vadagar1: Notch actually admitted he was a one trick pony. I don't think he was that arrogant.

Sure he made himself a LOT of money out of it and bought a very large house but who the f*ck wouldn't in his shoes? He did his thing (which yes did involve a LOT of luck) but then he cashed in and got out of there and currently as far as I'm aware no longer makes games. I'd agree with you if he was still there gumming up the works and failing to match the same success again but he hasn't done that. He moved on.

The fact Episode 1 - 4 of Star Wars are actually kind of shit says all I personally need to know about George Lucas.

I appreciate everything he did for the original trilogy, but this just further solidifies my view that it's good he parted ways with Disney on this. I'm sure it will have its flaws (possibly oodles), but I am almost sure it will outshine the new episodes by far

George Lucas didn't create the originals by himself. His original trilogy ideas sucked complete ass, and it was the rest of the team that convinced him to change it. The second triilogy, he didn't listen to anyone, and we know how that went down. Lucas is completely overrated.

That means George Lucas had a script or something just with own thoughts, it sucked. The team that worked on Star Wars influenced a lot of those out.

It is very believable, look at a lot of wierd shit that was done when the orignals got remastered.

@FKlepackiFTW:

He isn't a know it all hater, he is knowledgeable of actual HISTORY. People like you are completely unwilling to do a little Googling and actually RESEARCH the original films and understand that what he said was absolutely correct. There were so many people that REIGNED IN Lucas, and saved him, and the films, from himself.

The Prequels, which were all him, were proof of what so many had been saying for many years. He took ALL the credit for things that OTHER PEOPLE HELPED HIM CREATE.

Willful ignorance appears to be your problem.

Research "Revenge Of The Jedi." The Original Trilogy was supposed to end A LOT differently than it did.

@TheWatcher000: Just to add to this, a couple of ideas that Lucas intended for was that the Death Star was going to contain the entirety of the force, and Yoda was going to be a monkey. Lucas works best with a filter.

So did Jar Jar fucking Binks..............nuff said. Trying to turn Star Wars into a fucking childrens movie, geez most of us that loved it it growing up when we were kids loved it because it wasn't all stupid and dumbed down and childish..... then when we're all grown up we get the freakin Phantom Menace OMG!.

The first three Star Wars were masterpiece's, the latest three more or less travesties (especially The Phantom Menace).

I really really hate to say it, but I'm glad George Lucas no longer has any say when it comes to Star Wars. I would have absolutely loved to had seen Lucas vision for the series come to fruition as originally intended when he wrote the first three. Since then Lucas strayed from that vision enough all on his own. I don't think fans could handle another three disappointments.

@nl_skipper: Child friendly, not childish. I read an article, I don't remember where now as it was some time ago stating the target demographic for the prequels was children all along, where the first trilogy would at least have been considered all ages. So it's not hard to see why they turned out the way they did.

@Wesleypipes77: Fair enough, when I think about it I guess they were rather childish, lame humor and the like. Though I felt like they were less child-friendly than the original trilogy because they were so damn boring. So much stiff dialogue in un-exciting (entirely CGI) rooms, and so very little action. Unless you liked silly voices or fart jokes as a kid you'd be pretty bored... as I was if I remember The Phantom Menace correctly (and I would have been about 10 at the time), and lets not even talk about Clone Wars...

George, you're great at starting things, but not so good at continuing them. You had a vision for the first three Star Wars, and yes, it was all a great opera. But then the kid in you gave place to the adult, and the three "newer" Star Wars were made by an adult trying to understand a kid's imaginary. The original Star Wars was about a kid's dream coming true. You've done it. Now find another of your inner kid's dreams again, and start something new.
