The plot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a tightly guarded secret. But what we now know is that the story it tells, as well as the overarching narrative for the new trilogy, is not what franchise creator George Lucas originally had in mind.

No Caption Provided

Speaking with GameSpot sister site CBS News, Lucas explained that the Star Wars saga, as he envisioned it, is basically a soap opera. Disney listened to Lucas' ideas, but wanted to go another direction.

"The issue was ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, 'We want to make something for the fans,'" Lucas said. "I said, 'All I wanted to do was tell a story of what happened--it started here and it went there. It's all about generations and the issues of fathers and sons and grandfathers.

"It's a family soap opera," he added. "People don't realize it's actually a soap opera and it's all about family problems--it's not about spaceships. So they decided they didn't want to use those stories; they decided they were going to do their own thing so I decided, 'Fine.'"

"They weren't that keen to have me involved anyway" -- Lucas

The Force Awakens is the first core Star Wars movie that Lucas will have no direct hand in producing. He says Disney wasn't very thrilled about working with Lucas on the movie and the visionary admits that he wouldn't have been of much help, considering his ideas clashed with Disney's.

"But basically, they weren't that keen to have me involved anyway," he said. "But at the same time, I said, 'If I get in there I'm just going to cause trouble, because they're not going to do what I wanted them to do.' And I don't have the control to do that anymore and all I would do is muck everything up.

"So I said, 'OK, I will go my way and I let them go their way.'"

Disney paid $4.05 billion to buy the Star Wars franchise (among other properties) from Lucas in 2012.

He went on to compare his exit from the juggernaut entertainment series to a breakup.

"When you break up with somebody, the first rule is no phone calls," he said. "The second rule, you don't go over to their house and drive by to see what they're doing. The third one is you don't show up at their coffee shop and say you are going to burn it... You just say, 'Nope, gone, history, I'm moving forward.'"

CBS News' full interview with Lucas will air on CBS This Morning in December. The Force Awakens comes to theaters on December 18 with great expectations.

Yes George, I really doubt you envisoned "A New Hope" reskinned in 2015! ... What did you expect from Disney!? .. the money was all you cared about, you weren't rich enough at 2 billion, you needed another 4 billion to tide you over till death. Now we have put up with garbage every 2 years of political correctness & feminist propaganda!

THANKS GEORGE!! :(

If you really cared about your vision you wouldn't have sold it. Take your money and shut up.

So, now I finally see why Star Wars Battlefront wasn't so good. It was Disney's fault all along!

George Lucas, sadly, hasn't had a genuine vision since Empire, and that was a LONG time ago.

Of course they are gonna go their own way! If you get involved, Star Wars 7 will just turn out to be a Binks & Ewoks reunion!

Mr. Lucas, the smartest thing you did was selling the Star Wars IP to someone else. Lets just leave it at that.

@imajinn: Disney didn't make the fantastic four, Fox did. Disney has been on a solid run with marvel movies, with the only truely crappy one being Iron Man 3.

@virtuasega: and even Iron Man 3 wasn't that bad, it wasn't amazing by a long shot, just wasn't as good as the rest of the Marvel/Disney funfest.

I feel like he's the only one who gives a shit. I hate to break to you Mr. Lucas, but you fucked up with the prequel trilogy and everyone who cares about Star Wars, the people who pay to see it and actually made it successful, don't want you involved and they don't care about your "vision" anymore.

Based on his words I'd say he cries about not owning Star Wars every night.

Mr. Lucas really didn't have a vision for Star Wars. He retold a Japanese movie in a space setting, then didn't know where he wanted to go afterwards. Splinter in the Mind's Eye was the story he commissioned to follow up Star Wars, and he wanted its author to write in a way to keep the special effects on the cheap. Sometime after Empire began filming he toyed around with the idea of Darth Vader being Luke's father and wasn't even sure if he would go through with it.

I can't believe the praise for Return of the Jedi in the comment section below. It was a horrible finale to the original trilogy. How to resolve the love triangle started in Empire...have Leia be Luke's sister. That was just a horrible idea. Lucas also cut corners on the special effects in Jedi and it really looked cheap in so many scenes. One or more of the heroes needed to die in Jedi to add more gravitas to the movie.

Mr. Lucas can't write dialog. Even though I loved the first movie, it's dialog was horrible. Without another author to help clean up his writing the prequel trilogy ended up littered with tons his bad dialog. Further, there just wasn't much story in the prequels. One movie could've pretty much covered what the 3 movies combined touched on. The last prequel movie wasn't too bad, but Yoda/Ben just giving up was just not a good way to end it.

Interesting how much hate there is for George Lucas, considering that this guy created Star Wars in the first place. And that was not an easy task in the back-ass-wards stagnant Hollywood of the late 1970's. No matter how much people feel upset about Prequel CGI and bad writing, it doesn't stop anyone from watching and enjoying the Original trilogy. No Lucas no Star Wars, remember that.

George Lucas is a fallen prophet. Used to be inspired, used to be the "truth". However, bad idea after bad idea he all but ruined the great name of Star Wars and should be grateful that Disney was there to rescue it (if indeed that's what they will do). But no matter how you slice it, GL is no longer the man for the job and for a great name with many more stories to tell, SW is just getting started. Thanks for your original ideas Lucas, but go away before you further embarrass yourself.

I have respect for the man who had a part in revolutionizing the film industry. But his vision has mostly been geared for children but also got weirdly violent. I don't think he was good at balancing his demographics. I think jj Abrams can do the Spielberg Lucas feel, while gearing it for all audiences without sacrificing the adult viewers. Something kids will enjoy and still enjoy when theyre older. I cring Now when I see the ewoks goofily beat trained soldiers with sticks when I liked it as a kid, but I would have still enjoyed it if it was simply solders shooting soldiers instead.

@larsondir82: Actually a true star wars fan that grew up with the originals ,IV,V, and VI should be glad he gave up the license after the horrible prequels he made. Whether or not Disney can pull it off or not, is yet to be seen, but I don't think they can do any worse.

After so many years, George Lucas still doesn't get it. We don't want another Jar Jar and his Bunions, we dont want ewok furballs, and we especially dont want 20 years down the line for some enhanced gobbidy gook added to the film that looks fake. What we want is a story with good writing that makes sense and has great characters. If he was writing the Force Awakens, they probably wouldn't have started shooting the film yet. After all, it took him 6 rough drafts for New Hope to get it right and only after his co-writers got him back on track the best that they could.

hey shareholders, just let these guys make a new movie, have them create a new timeless masterpiece and cash in on it for the rest of ur existence ... instead of hyping a cheap crap flick to death again to make a few fast bucks ... just think a head for a brief moment ...

personally I have enough of Disney Star Wars after seeing this football like droid ... is their a cheaper way to animate such thing ... No ! I guess angry birds will have a camo in the movie as well ...

and never forget, George Lucas made this, seriously : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oS6PwQcCIXo

He wanted it to be more visually stunning rather than being story heavy. Look where that took the series. The only reason the originals weren't that crap were because of the people he was working with felt it needed to be more story heavy. They were missing for the prequels.
