Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Is Now "Even More" Proud Of The Film

Rian Johnson talks about what his "ultimate intent" was for the divisive 2017 Star Wars film.

2017's Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi was a box office smash, bringing in more than $1.3 billion at the box office, but it's also remembered for being a divisive entry in the sci-fi series. Director Rian Johnson has commented further about the film, saying he is "even more proud" of it now, five years later.

"When I was up at bat, I really swung at the ball," Johnson told Empire. "I think it's impossible for any of us to approach Star Wars without thinking about it as a myth that we were raised with, and how that myth, that story, baked itself into us and affected us."

Now Playing: The Evolution Of Star Wars Games

The filmmaker went on to say that his "ultimate intent" with The Last Jedi was not to strip away anything important about Star Wars, but to dig down into the "basic, fundamental power of myth."

"Ultimately I hope the film is an affirmation of the power of the myth of Star Wars in our lives," he said.

Some fans took issue with Luke Skywalker's death at the end of The Last Jedi, but Johnson believes sending him off in that manner was more about building the myth of Luke Skywalker and not deconstructing it. The final images in The Last Jedi are about Luke "defying the notion of, 'Throw away the past,' and embracing what actually matters about his myth and what’s going to inspire the next generation," Johnson said. He added, "So for me, the process of stripping away is always in the interest of getting to something essential that really matters."

Johnson is working on new Star Wars trilogy, but it's rumored to be on the backburner for now. The next Star Wars movie to come is the new film from Taika Waititi, followed by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins' new Rogue Squadron film. Waititi's new Star Wars movie will be released in late 2023.

As for Johnson, his next film is Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which comes to theaters and Netflix later this year.

The movie was excellent. The next one wasn't as good but I still very much enjoyed the sequels, and I grew up with the originals and the prequels.

The Last Jedi was the best in the modern trilogy. Now I am going to run out of the room before everyone yells at me. *starts sprinting"

@muddrox: I agree. It did a lot of things I appreciated. I also casually enjoy Star Wars, so it's not as sacred a thing to me as it is others.

@muddrox: No, I agree. It was still a mess and a bad movie overall, but it was the least bad of the sequels for sure.

Some fans took issue with Luke Skywalker's death at the end of The Last Jedi

That wasn't what fans took issue with at all. It was Luke not acting anything like Luke Skywalker. He fears his nephew is falling to the Dark Side and his first instinct is to kill him, not bring him back like his mass murdering father, who he didn't even know. Then you have him not even wanting to lift a finger to help Leia (his freaking sister!) and Han when they are in danger. If you want good post ROTJ Luke, go read the original Expanded Universe books.

That RJ is proud of it just shows how clueless he is about Star Wars.

Well, after rise of the skywalker, I can see why he would say that. That was so bloody disappointing.

Still... "I hope the film is an affirmation of the power of the myth of Star Wars in our lives".

No. That it is not. If anything the film had the opposite affect.

This movie is a disgrace.

I haven't watched any Disney Star Wars movies or shows since this travesty of a movie came out. It was when Disney showed me they don't care about Star Wars.

The Last Jedi definitely has it's flaws, but I consider it the 4th best Star Wars movie after the OT. Prequels had a grand vision, but sloppy direction, boring characters, and horrible acting. The other sequel movies were directed well and had convincing actors, but didn't have much going on beyond basic plot points and fan service.

TLJ had a point, it had something to say. That people make mistakes, but can learn from their failures. That a person's legacy should not define them or limit their potential, but should also not be flat out rejected either. And that greatness can come from anywhere. Throw in some Kurosawa influence, and a sprinkling of contemporary sociopolitical commentary, and BAM, you got yourself a Star Wars movie.

Much like the prequels, I can look past the flaws in TLJ when I step back to appreciate the vision behind it.

Director not scriptwriter. Just like the actors there's only so much a director can do with a bad script. He can be proud of his efforts despite the bad writing.

You swung away, but clipped it into a foul ball. The movie was a hot mess script wise, and all of that blame lays squarely with the director.

well goooood foooor yooooooou. its still a pile of crap and this hyper light jump attack is still stupid cause it made no fn sence. the main reason being the other captains in the ship didnt think of that too before the just ran out of fuel and went out like little b$%^&. the answer is a big no. the movie was dumb and ruined what could have been with oh lets be new with a lame plot line of maybe there no bodies for parents oh and smoke wtf man. you kill him off like that when he was build to be something special for a villain.

with that said hey like your other movies keep directing but stay the f away from starwars

TLJ was an absolute mess of a movie, but if I had to pick the least bad Sequel, that’d be it. TLJ wasn’t creatively bankrupt the way TFA and RoS were. There’s actually an interesting Star Wars story in there if you cut away half the characters and the pointless side stories. It wasn’t just regurgitating established Star Wars tropes onto a big pile of fan service.

TLJ felt like a movie with vision that had been hijacked by a zillion executive producers with a huge checklist of shallow, pandering junk that had to be crammed in.

I find you like Star Wars based off of when you were born.

Born in the 70-80s? You tend to like the original trilogy.

Born in the 90s? You tend to like the prequels (I remember when everyone thought these were terrible and ruined Star Wars)

I bet in about 10-15 years, everyone on social media will think the final three are the best, and probably think whatever new ones Disney has released recently have ruined the universe forever.

The cycle will continue....

Nah, if you want a star wars story that 'subverts expectation' just play KOTOR 2. TLJ completely ruined luke's character.

I am happy that Rian Johnson is proud of this movie.

I still remember walking out of the theater thinking "What the hell did I just watch??" This is the worst Star Wars film I have seen.

This movie killed Star Wars for some of my friends. I absolutely hated it, but I still love Star Wars. I just try to forget that it exists, along with the rest of the sequels. But mainly because of this movie, even if The Rise of Skywalker was worse.

No surprise he is proud, better to maintain confidence/self esteem and stay in his echo chamber than face the truth that it's a film that focused on subverting expectations, and delivering very little fan service while leaving the 3rd movie to pick up the pieces. **spoilers: Oh and lets not forget he altered/betrayed Luke's character into given up on Kylo Ren by trying to kill him instead of help him (a character decision Mark Hamill strongly disagrees with and tried to overturn).

Proud of the visual side of it maybe, but how can you be proud of the story and characters? It took away attention from some of the more promising characters or failed to develop their character even further.

Finn's whole story in that was pretty much that he likes Rose and wasted a lot of time to free some space horses. Poe's story was no better as it was just him getting in trouble and then being left in the dark and told to trust Holdo in a life or death situation. Rey just kept being Rey, potential was there but her character left a lot to be desired. Kylo was interesting and had room to grow as well, but I think his rise to power was a bit premature and didn't try to separate him from just being a copycat Vader. Hux was a disappointing antagonist especially since he was the son of one of the more prominent Imperials who fled to the Unknown Regions.

There was so much that needed to be covered that wasn't and forced the canon EU to fill in major portions of what is actually happening. The whole movie felt like filler in comparison with a few major events happening. The whole thing could have been covered in just a few chapters of a book.

Legends EU wasn't perfect and definitely had some bad such as Dark Empire (Which would have been a more interesting Palpatine revival story which is a sad thought), but they could have ripped almost any novel and it would have been better.

The only things I'll really give it credit for is it tried to make its own story and setup for the final movie (Which Abrams just said nah, I don't care what happened in episode 8) as well as the visuals. Too much potential was squandered, pointless or stupid scenes (I mean really, planetary bombers against a single dreadnaught? Pretty much threw away lives for no gain).

It is what it is I guess. But Star Wars needs to move away from this chapter of Star Wars. Hopefully we'll see more movies based on The Old Republic Era (Or anything in-between the Prequel trilogy), or past the Sequel trilogy era, or more A Star Wars Story. Maybe Johnson can do something well with his new trilogy if he is both the creator and sole lead director for it (Don't know who thought it was a good idea to have multiple directors for a trilogy. Especially when they have different visions for it).

@clubhouse: I wouldn't compare the Resistance to an actual military too much.

The Resistance is more of a paramilitary organization with limited members. The New Republic Defense Force would probably not tolerate it in the same way (Probably some exceptions of course). Albeit The New Republic Defense Force is closer to how the Republic was post Ruusan Reformation and pre-Clone Wars, but still much larger and stronger compared to the Judicial forces or the Resistance. More members, more equipment, stronger command structure, and funding allow them to promote the "best" candidates.

The Resistance can't be picky.

Edit: I definitely agree with you on such a person being put in a command role though.

Proud of a film that went pretty much nowhere throughout, with a dumb Mary Poppins scene, while destroying a character's progression that was built up in the last trilogy.

Yeahhhh, I guess I would be proud too if Disney gave me money to have a scene showing Luke chugging back green milk lol

I will give him this: that Kylo/Rey/guards lightsaber fight scene was pretty good. But that doesn't save the "I did whatever I wanted with no overarching direction" movie that was TLJ...
