Star Wars: The Old Republic's Next Big Expansion Launches This Year, 10th Anniversary Celebrations Planned

BioWare's long-running MMO approaches a major milestone.

2021 marks the 10th anniversary of BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO, and the developer is marking the occasion with a big new expansion and more.

The new expansion is called Legacy of the Sith, and it's slated for release this holiday. The expansion marks the start of the MMO's 10th anniversary festivities that will include special events and new content throughout 2022.

In Legacy of the Sith, players take part in a military campaign and are trying to take control of a planet, Manaan, as they unravel the true plans of Darth Malgus. A new feature, Combat Styles, comes to The Old Republic in the expansion as well, while the level cap is rising from 75 to 80. New co-op missions, which are billed as the most challenging to date in the game, are coming as well.

One of these is a new Flashpoint that takes place in a tomb on top of a mountain on the planet Elom. A new Operation, set on a deep space research station, is included with Legacy of the Sith as well.

Combat Styles, the new feature, allow players to independently select a class story and mesh it with ability sets from tech- or force-wielding classes. A "refactored" character creation system is included with Legacy of the Sith as well, while items and loadout menus are now streamlined, according to BioWare.

The Old Republic originally released in December 2011. In the time since, the game has brought in nearly $1 billion in revenue for EA.

This was the big news that BioWare teased on Thursday as part of its announcement that the next Mass Effect and Dragon Age games would not show up at EA Play Live on July 22.

This game shoulda came to console.. I p;ayed Kotor 1+2 on PC and console and console worked fine..

I did play TOR twice and the 1st time i quit outta dislike of the lame mmo generic fetch this, kill 20 of that quest.

but the 2nd time a few years later(2017'ish) i went further and eventually bored quit.. id probably play..

**I feel shamed that i was excited when we found out KOTOR 3 was a mmo instead of standalone.. ugh! It was right b4 Bioware died too so it probably woulda been good.

or atleast similar to DragonAge Inq= not great but decent...

At this point all games should be on console. The newer consoles(esp Xbox) support M+K so Total Warhammer and Dota2 & Team Fortress could work fine & millions would play because of added cheat protections..

@letsragemoar: Well, that's what this game felt like to me. Run through vast empty maps, do some samey chore(provided other players don't interfere making it 10 times more obnoxious), then run back again. Getting there and back, easily took the most amount of time Not even the speeders could't remedy this. The storylines were not worth the slog I had to get through.

@letsragemoar: If only he could be as cool as you. But top 7 is certainly a big accomplishment. I can't even name that many mmos that are still alive today.

@Atzenkiller: There are plenty of MMOs very much alive today, problem is you don't hear much from them unless you follow them yourself. Most of them don't do much marketing anymore unless there's a big expansion coming up.

@Henry518: Which makes them insignificant. There's about a billion Youtubers today by the looks of it and about 99% of them are just copy/pasting stuff from other channels. Same as there's a similar amount of "mobile games", which I would not even consider a game, and indie titles that are no better. None of those things are worth mentioning.

@Atzenkiller: Oh yeah, I agree on that. Not many MMOs have their own personality anymore and most good ones are already outdated, such as WoW, FFXIV, GW2.

But still, I'd say only the top MMOs are worth mentioning these days. The rest of them, alive as they may be, are not worth mentioning at all in my opinion.

@Henry518: That is why the millions that play them don't think you matter either.
