Star Wars Video Games Now Live Under The Lucasfilm Games Umbrella

Say hello to Lucasfilm Games, the new name for Disney's Star Wars video game projects.

Lucasfilm has announced a change for its gaming projects. Going forward, the company's video game ambitions will live under the "Lucasfilm Games" umbrella, Disney announced on the Star Wars website. This will also include Indiana Jones games, including the new one in development at Wolfenstein studio Machine Games.

This will be the catch-all name that is the "official identity for all gaming titles from Lucasfilm, a name that encompasses the company's rich catalog of video games and its eye toward the future."

You will see the re-branding on Twitter and Facebook, and on those places you can expect to see "breaking news and more directly to fans." There is a new logo as well, which you can see below and in the sizzle reel video that the company released with this announcement.

Introducing Lucasfilm Games.
Introducing Lucasfilm Games.

Don't get too excited, however, as the sizzle reel below does not include any new games or nods to the future, beyond bearing the new logo. Instead, the video showcases some popular Star Wars games such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Squadrons, and more.

Lucasfilm does not develop games itself, but the company instead licenses its properties to other developers and publishers, such as EA. This was not always the case, as Lucasfilm was working on Star Wars 1313, an exciting-looking game about a bounty hunter, until the developer was closed. A developer who worked on this game recently reminisced and reflected on the game's cancellation.

Disney was at one point a big name in game development, releasing the Disney Infinity, Epic Mickey, and Split/Second franchises, among others, but has in recent years backed away for internal game development. Disney chairman Bob Iger has acknowledged that Disney's game development track record has been spotty, which is why the company is now pursuing a different strategy where it licenses its games to developers, like EA, to make Star Wars games.

EA hasn't had the best luck with third-person games using the license. Aside from the successful Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it had another game in the works with Uncharted's Amy Hennig at the helm that was canceled.

EA's deal with Disney for Star Wars games reportedly runs for 10 years. Having started in 2013, that would mean it is scheduled to end in 2023, unless it has been extended.

Lol. No thanks. After the last 6 star wars garbage movies and the recycled green Gizmo show, I’ve lost all interest in the Star Wars franchise.

Unless it a SW game in the Force Unleashed or Jedi Knight world complete with play they way the 2 played, along with light saber disemboweling, cause that is what light saber does to flesh.. I dont want it.

To date the only good SW games are Kotor games, Jedi Knight and Force unleshed,

The EA contract runs out in 2023. Disney is setting up Lucasfilm Games to listen to pitches from potential bidders for the license or developers/studios on specific projects. By the time something is good and ready enough to go into formal development it would already be 2023 and a game/s could be ready as early as 2025. This also gives Disney leverage even if Disney decides to stay with EA. It's unlikely EA will spend another dime on any serious Star Wars project from now on without knowing if they have the licensing rights beyond 2023 so EA actually has the leverage where Disney could be seeing blanks or just cheaply made craps for possibly 5 years or more, just when Disney+ made Star Wars a hot property again. Starting Lucasfilm Games now retake the leverage back from EA.

@wr3zzz: Lucasfilm games is not the same Lucasfilms that produced games back in the 90s when George Lucas owned the company as EA had an better reputation back then as well. People motives and desires change the company and it's direction. EA saw dollar signs and not necessarily the quality of it's works. For me quality of your work matters and in the long run if the product is good the money will come.

Could mean a change in the long term.

After Battlefront 2 I suspect they will be more selective about who handles what.

So they're just creating another vapid name and logo to put in their licensing projects? I hope there's not a yuppie there wasting money on hoes and expensive wine.

Disney Infinity was a successful toys to life franchise. It’s weird that they just shut it down instead of passing the reins to someone else, even EA.

This announcement sounded so promising...until I realized this didn't really mean anything and EA is still the primary dev.

Going the "Xfinity" route.

If people don't see EA or Disney on the box they won't figure it out!

Honest to god, Disney should cut the contract they have with EA short, Or force them to sign a new deal. That allowed another developer to join in on the deal. Because EA can’t even make their own games without it being tainted with microtransactions. And sure as hell can’t keep that mindset from the Star Wars games.

Besides, think of the possibilities:

Star Wars Knights of the old republic III (CD Projekt Red)

Star Wars Bounty hunter: The Mandalorian (Ubisoft)

Star Wars Republic commando 2: Imperial Shock troopers (id Software)

Star Wars: Underground Smugglers (Naughty Dog, or RockStar games)

Star Wars: Republic elite (Activison)

Star Wars: The first jedi (Sucker Punch Productions)

Star Wars Galactix conquest (RTS) (Relic Entertainment)

Star Wars: JRPG (Square Enix, or Atlus games)

@illegal_peanut: Sadly I don't think Disney or Lucasfilm cares one bit about its old game franchises. They're going to try to shove the Sequel crap down our throats whether we want it or not. So far I haven't seen a single good SW game since The Force Unleashed came out in 2008!

@illegal_peanut: A Squeenix Star Wars game sounds like the most reasonable possibility since Disney currently has a working relationship with them (Kingdom Hearts, Avengers). I highly doubt Disney will ever team up with a dev known for creating adult rated games (which is a REALLY big deal for them).

@Barighm: True but they do have those moments where they will allow it. Like the Marvel Netflix series, and not censoring the 3rd Deadpool movie.

Almost looks like their finally ready to distance themselves from the reputation destroying, creativity inhibiting, soul sucking hand of the corpo dark side we call Electronic Arts.

Then again their not really known for making decisions that are even remotely good. In fact, they are known for making mind numbingly bad decisions so maybe not.

I mean, so long as they're still letting EA exclusively publish them, chances are that most of them will be at best mediocre to at worst microtransaction infested POS...with the occasional reprieve here and there for a game like Fallen Order.

Wake me when they start letting a GOOD publishers take a crack at them. Until then, really nothing to see here IMHO.

Just marketing. The same way that EA has "maintained" the Bioware brand rather than just calling them EA games.

@BeefoTheBold: And Fallen Order is only noteworthy because it wasn't loaded with DLC. All it does is prove just how good the Souls/Sekiro formula is, and even then it doesn't quite match it because there is no gear to find.
