Star Wars Will Get Openly Gay Character, JJ Abrams Says

"It's about inclusivity. So of course"

Future installments in the iconic and long-running Star Wars series will "of course" feature openly gay characters, The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams said this week.

No Caption Provided

"Of course!" Abrams said at a pre-Oscar event at the headquarters of his Bad Robot company, according to a report from The Daily Beast. "When I talk about inclusivity it's not excluding gay characters. It's about inclusivity. So of course."

He went on to say, "To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn't be a homosexual character in that world."

Abrams isn't directing Star Wars: Episode VIII, as that duty is in the hands of Rian Johnson. However, Abrams is on-board as an executive producer for the film, due out in 2017.

The Force Awakens opened in December and quickly became one of the biggest movies of all time. It has made more than $2 billion worldwide and currently stands as the No. 3 movie ever in terms of global box office, only behind Titanic and Avatar.

As Polygon points out, author Chuck Wendig's 2015 Star Wars novel Aftermath--which is canon--featured an openly gay character. Wendig caught some amount of flak for this.

The next entry in the film series, Rogue One, arrives in December.

Is that supposed to make the film more appealing or something? Abrams is going to break his wrist with all that back patting. Maybe I'm just an old fashioned prude or something but I'm really, really ,really not interested in anyone's sexual lusts.

I want to watch a sci-fi movie to be entertained, not to sit down for a sermon on 'diversity' and if this next film is the latter rather than the former, it won't see a single penny from me.

@balrogbane: I'm sure you felt the same way about Leia and Han and Anakin and Padme's sexual lusts. They had no business being there giving you an unneeded sermon on the acceptability of heterosexuality when you're just trying to watch a goddamn sci-fi movie! Freaking social justice warriors always trying to push their hetero-Christian agenda! Leave Hollywood alone and asexual the way it's meant to be!

@Zandeus: Just because gays are starting to be accepted in todays society doesn't mean we need to flaunt it. Whether you like to admit it or not, the vast overwhelming majority of people in the world are heterosexual and really don't care to see gay on gay.

@Dilandau88: How is having a gay character flaunting it? The only reason it's even mentioned here is because of all the gay hating homophobes that still exist. If this wasn't such a hot button topic for religious conservatives, there wouldn't be a need for these sort of headlines.... we'd all just watch the movie, realize that a certain character was homosexual and not react. But people do react... and therefore homosexuality still needs to be "flaunted", as you put it.

@Zandeus When they flaunt it to 6 years old childrens in schools you know there's something wrong. In truth it's about emasculating mens to ease population control. Guys act like womens, womens act more like guys (feminist and stuff) but womens are not biologically fit to be as strong and aggressive as mens so they just end up taming the blue pill mens instead doing the tyrants job, they're less of a threat. Inversion of the natural order, xenoestrogens in the food supplies, political correctness tyranny, blatant oversexualization in medias and everything. It's a brewing cocktail for a messed up society.

The misconception that the whole world is okay with homosexuals is common, those living in Hollywood (and their own little world) think if they make it seem 'normal' everyone will celebrate and be... gay. I don't care what you do in your private life, but I can't remember going up to someone and saying or implicating that I was not gay, so why do gays think they have to advertise the lifestyle? Do they make movies and say... this character will Not be gay? Yet it must be pointed out, labeled and advertised if gay... just in case you either hate them, love them or are one, so everyone can have an opinion, everyone can weigh in and create drama instead of just treating them as you do everyone else, as a human. This is the world we live in... you are white, black, gay, straight, hispanic, man, women, rich, poor... all labels created to divide us, to enable hate to take root, someone to blame, someone to scapegoat... someone to use as a tool when needed to gain votes. When we wakeup and realize that we get played by the gov't who uses the media to manipulate the masses it's then we can learn to live in peace, in harmony and not waking up everyday wondering which label to blame today, which group to hate for all your problems.

@Zilched: I agree... sort of. The reason why it's pointed out everytime a character is gay.... is because of the misconception you pointed to with your opening statement. The short answer is... because people don't discriminate against heterosexuals... but plenty of people still do, against homosexuals. When most everyone is on board (okay with) homosexuality... you'll see the media stop reporting on it.

@Zilched: I agree with advertising the gay lifestyle. Do the writers have to sit down and say, "Which of these characters can we make gay?". A character like Lando could have been gay. As far as I know it doesn't mention his love life in the movies anywhere. But it seems in Hollywood if a character is gay it has to be made extremely apparent. Everyone in the universe has to know this character is gay.

To all the angry, immature man-children, calm down and stop making a fool out of yourselves.

You really think the writers would be so stupid to linger on that aspect? If anything, it will subtly get mentioned and that will be that. Adding in a gay character will not change your beloved Star Wars, much in the same way that adding black people in film in the past didn't make film worse (I'm sure there were many who thought adding in blacks for the first time was "pandering").

You're making it a bigger deal than it has to be. But if you want to "boycott" this movie for something so small, by all means, feel free. This movie will still do fine without you =)

Most of the guys complaining wouldn't be if he had said it was going to be lesbian. Lets be honest, most of the time the guys that are bothered don't mind gays in media as long as they're hot females. See they're only half intolerant as long as they have something in it for their viewing pleasure (it's one of the reason why shows like orange is the new black are so popular guys wouldn't watch that show if the gays were mostly males).

Oh and never believed the statistics about how many homosexuals there are in the world and think people who do are in denial. Look at how many people especially men are closet homos and no seeing a guy with his girlfriend or wife does not mean that he isn't gay. Think about that before you believe that 1% bull.

As long as the character makes sense plot wise and they haven't just spliced homosexuality in there to tick a box then that is fine.

@anaccsa: No I just don't agree with hand picking actors and actresses to meet a diversity quota. That just feels wrong to me. Like they are trying to solve discrimination by over compensating in the opposite direction. That is happening more and more every year as political correctness gets more attention.

The movie should be written with entertainment in mind and then the BEST actor or actress chosen for the role regardless of sex, race or orientation.

It is the same in companies as well when they have rules like they NEED to hire X number of women or non-white people. As far as I'm concerned all applications should be anonymous to sex, race and sexual orientation until the short list because those things are irrelevant to picking the best person for any given job. The BEST person is the one with the most experience or qualifications.

@dexda: What about the literally hundreds if not thousands of times that white actors were cast in the roles of minorities throughout Hollywood's history or changed ethnic characters to white characters to cast white actors? This is something that is still happening even today -constantly-. Katniss was described as having olive skin, jet black hair and green eyes. Although her race is never specifically stated in the Hunger Games books these are some pretty non-white traits yet the movie casting call was for a caucasian actress. I dug Cumberbatch as Kahn in Into Darkness, but Kahn was never a white guy. How about Remo Williams earning a freakin' Oscar nomination for best makeup because they put Joel Grey in "yellow-face" to play a Korean martial arts master (because god forbid they cast an actual Korean). How about Gods of Egypt that came out literally 3 days ago? That's a whole lot of British white guys in ancient Egypt...

That's not even getting into all the "white guy joins the natives and is better at being native than they are" storylines that are so popular like Avatar, The Last Samurai, Dances With Wolves, etc.

Even movies based on real events frequently get the "whitewash" treatment. The film 21 was based on a real group of asian students at MIT, yet they made almost everyone white for the film version.

Boyega was picked to read for TFA because they saw him in Attack The Block (awesome film, BTW) and they thought he'd be perfect for the role, but he still had to read for it and it took them 7 months to decide.

@Byshop: If Jennifer Lawrence was the best actress for Katniss I don't give a shit. Same way if the best actor/actress for a character is black the fact they were the best for the job is all that matters.

Getting skin complexion and eye colour EXACTLY like it is in the book is stupid because a character isn't defined by their skin colour and eyes (in most cases), they are defined by what they say and do in the story. As long as the person playing them portrays the character in a faithful and convincing way that is all that matters.

IF they chose Jennifer Lawrence BECAUSE she was white then that is wrong and that is a problem with the person making the choice and should be addressed by focussing on the person who did it directly. Because quite frankly if Katniss had been played by a black girl it would have made absolutely no difference to the story.

FORCING people to hire X number of black people is just as bad though. That actor/actress has still been picked BECAUSE of their skin colour instead of their acting talent. That is what I don't like about quotas.

In movies obviously sometimes you HAVE to keep it a certain way. Having Daniel Craig play an African warlord is stupid on MANY levels. Especially if the character is a historical figure.

The only time I ever step into the grey area is when we are talking about continuity. Like I got into an argument with some people a while back about the alleged rumours that Idris Elba might be considered for the next James Bond. After 50 years of white James Bond I think it would be VERY jarring to suddenly switch to a black James Bond. Same with someone like Lt Uhura on Star Trek. She's been black since the 60s. I think it is safe to assume she is a black character after all these years. These are old series being pulled into the modern era and politics but sometimes I think you just have to follow the "if it ain't broke" approach.

@dexda: You zeroed in on one example of literally hundreds of instances where the role was changed to "white" contrary to the source material (even if the character is supposed to be a real person). As I said, they didn't "pick Jennifer Laurence because she was white", they didn't even consider actresses that -weren't- white. And again, that's just one of so many examples of Hollywood changing a character to white, having a white actor playing a non-white character, etc. Even if you don't like the Hunger Games example, feel free to pick from any of the many, many other instances where Hollywood whietwashed a character.

You seem to be oversimplifying how casting selection works. It's not like they get a bunch of actors in a room and "best actor wins". When you have a role, often tons of actors are qualified for the role. You don't choose based on "who's the best actor" per se, you choose by who's the best fit for the role. Who is the actor who can play the character the way you want them played. Jennifer Lawrence is awesome and I think she made a great Katniss, but that doesn't mean that someone else couldn't have. You say that it wouldn't matter to the story if Katniss were cast as a black actress. Technically, that's true, but sadly in today's world the reaction would have been negative. Cast a white actress as Katniss and nobody bats an eye, but when they cast Rue with a black actress a TON of people lost their minds on Twitter to complain about it because even though Rue's race was never specified in the book, a lot of white people pictured her in their heads as white. There are no "quotas" for casting decisions so I'm not sure where you got that idea. If the producers/director decide that they want a black actor for a particular role, that's their choice. But when literally 70-80% of the characters in Hollywood movies are white over the last decade (USC study), it boggles my mind when people complain about a role being designated for a non-white straight male actor.

Before "The Force Awakens" all the bigots said they would boycott the movie because a main character was black. With all those people boycotting, it has managed to become the 3rd top grossing film in the World. Can't wait to see what happens once all the new round of bigots boycott. At least all the closet homosexuals, err I mean bigots, will have something to jerk off to when they buy it on bluray.

Isn't C3P0 already the openly gay Star Wars character? He's a robot that acts like a den mother. And why is this news when gay characters have been in cinema since...forever now. I'm pretty sure there were gay actors in Shakespeare's plays so WTF people. Why does this matter? I thought Star Wars was about killing the baddies and saving the universe, not what sexual appetites a character might have. Hollywood, please kill the noise and cut the crap already..it's old news

Star Wars wants to be inclusive? Then they'll also need to add a character in a wheel chair, another who was born with a disability, a bisexual, a transgender FtM, a transgender MtF, two-spirited, pansexual, omnisexual...I'm sure I'm forgetting some. The point is that making up characters just for the sake of being able to publicly claim that your movie is inclusive, when it really isn't, is petty. True inclusiveness is a lot more work than just adding a single gay character...who will probably end up being a Caucasian guy, anyway.

Depends what you mean by "gay character"? If its the typical hollywood overly feminine overly dramatic stereotype than you can shove it up youre arse. If you want to promote homosexuality you can start by informing people that being gay doesnt mean youre an annoying over the top attention seeker. THATS what people find annoying.
